The RPG Apocalypse #1

The RPG Apocalypse

Rate this book
Life isn't a game. Well, maybe it is now.

Every day is the same for Joseph. Study; go to class; repeat. He can't help wondering what it's all for? Who is it all for? Life is dull and there's no prospect of that changing. Is some excitement too much to ask for?

"Get to safety if you wish to survive!"

Joseph's prayers are answered, but not in a way he could ever have expected. Goblins, ghouls, kobolds and a myriad of monsters and mythical creatures have spawned all over the college campus and beyond. The carnage is shocking.

If he's going to survive the RPG apocalypse, Joseph is going to have to figure out the new rules fast. And is it wrong to feel so alive, when so many other people have died?

None of this story makes any kind of sense. Joseph survives a system apocalypse, witnessing his college campus be overrun by goblins, kobolds, zombies, and ghouls. He lets some rando girl into his dorm room, beating the ghoul chasing her to pieces and gains a fireball spell. And already my telling it is more exciting than the author makes it!

Joseph is a wimp. A take-charge wimp, wimpifying everyone else he joins up with. And good thing, too, because otherwise, they might object to him stage-managing their every freaking move. Sadly, we're in his head so we get the play-by-play for every little thing in a manner that sucks the joy out of having a fireball spell!

Also, the worldbuilding makes no sense, there's no sense of urgency, the characters would need to upgrade to achieve wet-blanket status, and I'm frankly more interested in what the kobolds are doing than anything Joseph is planning. Dude still hasn't made it to the cafeteria after three days (!) of "trying".

I'll admit I didn't make it far. Like, maybe 5%. But I count the low percentage there a win because I don't need to waste more time on this.

Book one

You can tell that this is the authors first time writing. This book feels very juvenile and the game world to easy. The characters come across as moronic.
Why is it that so many of the characters go straight for the fireball spell? To me it's a poor choice for combat. Just wait till that zombie you just set on fire gives you a nice warm hug or you burn down half the town.

I dropped this at chapter three.

Good luck!

I've kept my rating in the middle because I really didn't like the start of this. The dialogue was lacking and the author went and killed off the only female character in the story. There wasn't anything special about the main character other than he's the main character to start with. The book got better when those who survived the changes on Earth were then transported to another world.

The much stronger characters that the MC and his group meet are exceptional. I want to give this a chance so I'm going to read the next book. I have my fingers crossed that the character arcs get better and the other female character that the MC meets actually lasts and isn't sacrificed for the story.

Simplistic..Shallow and boring

Scouring the bucket for good LITRPG and found this. Can't say it was bad, can't say it was good...Can't even say that it was interesting. What I can tell you is that it was very simplisti with no depth of characters....and rather boring,

Definitely feels like a first book from a new author. For that, some leeway is given.

But ... it's all very disjointed, starting off with a "system apocalypse," turning into an isekai, and finally morphing into a dungeon dive.

Other than the MC, characters don't stay around long enough to get attached to. For one reason or another, of the first group of five, only two persist through to the end of the book. They joined up with another group of three, but only one of those persisted as well.

For all that the character doesn't start off in the back end of nowhere as common with this sort of book, it very quickly feels much the same. Gratuitous faceless deaths and a particularly unfair, ramping system that seems designed to destroy people rather than power them up. (The whole thing with the Kobold ritual leading to a non-optional quest where the reward was "survival.")

Even the RPG elements seem a bit disjointed. The MC very quickly decides that Dexterity must be very important for him as a spellcaster because it would increase his cast speed. Okay, it actually does in that system, but it seemed very much OOC knowledge. I'm not exactly a gaming naif even if I'm not as up-to-date on modern games and rulebook editions as I was a few decades ago, but it never would have occurred to me to think of Dex as a caster stat. That's for the stabby-types of people and/or certain crafting.

The only character that had enough personality for me to sort of start to like them was the first of the cast to be removed. Even at the end of the book, I had no attachment to any of the characters.

The dungeon dive aspect is done decently, with some interesting threats and interesting solutions even if the final resolution is "get a group literally 3x higher in levels to solve it." For those who like dungeon dives, this might be a redeeming arc of the story ... but it's maybe a bit too little, too late.

This feels thrown together and never shows you an overall point.

This is a collection of things that happened, but at no time does it feel like a story. Switching from an apocalypse book to an isekai book leaves you lost. Add in the constantly revolving cast of characters, and you have something that you are never invested in. When I reached the end nothing was happening, and I did not care in the slightest.

Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. I went 49% before dropping.

Character - 5/10, Plot - 5/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 6/10, Writing - 4/10, Enjoyment - 5/10

I don't have too many negative things to say about the characters other than that they were pretty flat. And weren't too smart. But there are people like that out there and maybe this is their story.

The plot is a straightforward System Apocalypse premise, at least for the first half of the book. I can't speak beyond that since I dropped it. There were some interesting things that happened, but nothing I'm likely to remember a month from now.

I actually have a few positives with regard to the game mechanics. While the system itself is pretty simplistic, I did like how it operated a bit differently. On one hand, monsters stayed in their spawn areas and only became hostile when a person approached within a set proximity. But on the other hand, all monsters grew a little stronger each day and any dead ones respawned the following day as well. This put our survivors on a timetable for their leveling. Some people might not like this because the ramping difficulty is more likely to punish people than train or power them up. I liked this since it put pressure on our survivors and was different than the norm.

The writing was below average. Not only were there lots of grammatical and proofreading mistakes, but the syntax was often clunky. "The monster was only a few feet away and I was surrounded on all sides by vehicles. I didn’t have time to try and climb up and over. It raised its axe as it rushed in my direction. I could see the menacing skull on the axe with great clarity. It was seconds away from cleaving me in two."

I don't want to harp on the writing too much. We all start somewhere. But it's a good idea for aspiring writers to read widely and take the time to examine how other authors write scenes. Be inspired by other gamelit stories, but definitely read outside the genre to get a better understanding of the quality spectrum. I love gamelit, but the prose isn't winning any awards anytime soon.

I didn't enjoy this story enough to finish it, but there were a few intriguing ideas that I wouldn't mind seeing again.

This is my first book by this author, and I believe it's his first book as well.

This book starts out with the purity of someone who wanted to write an RPG apocalypse story after reading plenty of other author's takes on them. That's the feeling I got. Joe is a student at an unnamed university when the apocalypse strikes. There are no reasons given, it just happens.

People vanish in thin air (which reminded me of the first Left Behind movie with Kirk Cameron. That was hilarious) as monsters start spawning in, ranging from goblins to kobolds to ogres and the undead. With so many people gone (again, no reason is given or even considered), Joe gets started battling the undead. He doesn't pull mobs, just fights them one on one.

Eventually he meets someone else, then some other people as they fight mobs around the campus and search for food within. The mobs aren't pushovers, and people get injured on a regular basis as they start leveling up.

I'll stop the recap there, although a lot more happens in this book, so much so that it could have been made into two books. To me, the time spent at the university is the weakest part of the story. It's fine as far as it goes, but it's nothing we haven't seen before and it doesn't have that spark to keep you reading.

It's after they leave the campus that things pick up. Which I won't spoil.

This is pure LitRPG, with regular notifications (although I will say that the font size seems to be too large). The editing is solid but not perfect, and the story (for me) really picked up after they left the university.

I would love to give this a 5/5*, but the beginning drags it down a notch. Having said that, I have high hopes for book 2. I'm excited to see where the story goes, and now that book 1 is behind him, I'm hoping the author can really sink his teeth into the story.

4/5* Still worth reading even if it doesn't have five stars.

It is fun to read. It is another LitRPG. Nothing really unique or extraordinary. Characters do die in this book. In many others, characters are reborn or they are characters that you didn't become attached to. That isn't true here so there is that added sense of surprises and drama.

I got five chapters in and I can't stomach this anymore. Something about this book just seems off. I don't know what it is.

I don't know if it's the protagonist or the random girl that just shows up and goes along with the protagonist's plan. I will skim through this, then shelf it as a did not finish.

I just can't take anymore. It reads like the author is just spewing his thoughts onto the page.
Nothing in this book sets it apart from any of the other apocalypse books (except this book being less than basic, and the author's fascination with using tennis balls as a unit of injury measurement).

Childish

No one says "I hear a ruckus". No one thinks to themselves "I don't hear a commotion"

I only made it 13 pages in and that was enough for me.

This reads like a middle school or high school writing assignment that allows f-bombs.

From the 13 pages I read, I cannot believe any reviews above 3 stars is not paid for.

I would advise to skip this book

I honestly tried my best to read and engage with this book but i find myself skipping ahead of the story due to it at best seeming so bland and boring. I managed to get about 35% through the book before I have up and slipped to write this review. I can honestly say I won't attempt in the future to finish the book either.

Plot Hole Express - a list

1) Our families and everyone we know are dead, oh bummer. (Actual content length)

2) There’s a system or something that makes a couple announcements. No curiosity or further explanations about this.

3) Some survivors are transported to a foreign world. Foreign world inhabitants express no curiosity about this whatsoever. Transplant lack of knowledge and questions never registers to foreign world inhabitants. No curiosity by MC about whether others have made it or why foreign inhabitants accept this as normal.

4) big bad end quest/boss is named “thief bug” as a species. No explanation or reason for this. This is almost explained by bodies and equipment being stuck in sluice gate maybe? But then MC thinks actually these people hid there to keep insects away. No explanation for this name.

5) MC repeatedly expressed that he wants to make a guild. No explanation given for why he would want that or what it will do for him other than allow him to own property other than a “small shop”. No explanation of why he wouldn’t just join a “guild”. What is a guild?

Book shows author can write individual scenes, fights, create characters, monsters, and skills but not put together a plot. I can’t either. But I don’t write books.

Basic but Decent

A fun System apocalypse Framework. However The descriptive and emotional content is a bit flat. One of the differences between this book and Others in the genre Is how fickle Various party members are. They 10 to Bail after a time. Seems odd considering the event but that said humans are fickle. The author also seems willing to kill off characters which is both a bun and a annoyance. I hate investing in a character Even if it's support and then have to go on without when they die. The RPG system is extremely basic However it seems that it could be expanded and I hope it will be in the next iteration. Obviously the Motivations of the meddling gods That invoked the apocalypse are still unclear as is the status of the main group within the new world versus Their origin world. i mean does this kind of thing happen often where they now are.... Story swapping would be fun between adventures. There is no actual romance but some innuendo and it is very inconsistent and confusing.. Hope the next book is better as the premise is sound.

KU Review

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:

Character development: minimal
Game elements: moderate
Harem elements: none
Tone: mostly serious slice of life adventure

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

I honestly liked the story. It's a nice and simple LitRPG. The system was quite generic and the setting, too, but I was looking for something like that, so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

My only critique is that the protagonist & friends end up in a different world with a medieval setting, etc. leaving Earth behind or so. It would have been much more interesting to continue reading about how life on Earth was going to change. But it seems that the system teleported everyone away from Earth for some reason. Maybe to act as reinforcement in that new world? Who knows.

Rough but good

Needs editing but it never detracts from the story. The book had a fairly basic character sheets but it worked for it, I especially liked the impermanence of team members all too often gamelit apocalypse books have a core group rising together but this had a more realistic revolving door some die some just drop you never know who will stay... well other than the mc.

As far as system apocalypse is go this book was pretty unimaginative. The lit RPG elements were very very light and not much depth to them. There was no wondering about where the system came from or why it just happened. Then in the middle of the book it turned from a lit RPG apocalypse into a lit RPG fantasy on another world. The last half of the book was uneventful and pretty boring. Only recommended if you can't find anything else.

Mix of apocalypse and isekai!!

This first installment requires a very generous helping of patience. MC motivation seems hollow and all around people seemed really ready to accept mammoth changes without too much of a fuss. RPG elements abound but story and world building should have been given preference, instead of just non stop action. Overall some more effort needs to go into polishing this novel so that the complete novel flows together smoothly.

Very good start

Very good start overall and although it does feel a bit like an apocalyptic slice of life at times it is also made clear how this develops the character and helps show him a different side of humanity than he is accustomed too. Overall its very good just on the point that there is no glaring faults and it shows a lot of potential for the coming sequels.

I know it's fiction but

I couldn't get too far into it due to idiocy. If your in a college, there is multiple things that are flammable and considering you can throw farther than a spell well then. They are supposed to have half a brain if they're in college. If we ever had that situation then I hope people won't be as stupid.

Inept and useless MC

Wow, not really a good book. It was hard to finish. I know there are a lot of people who hate OP MCs, but even worse are weak minded MCs and way over powered antagonists. The only reason the MC survived in this book (can't call it a story because there isn't one) is because the author only uses plot armor and dues ex machina.

Fun book, worth reading.

Fun time, worth reading if you like the genre. It moves well and quickly, I was surprised when I finished it. It felt like the story was just getting started. I’ve no clear idea of where the story is going. There wasn’t a lot of plot building other than the usual “system takes over the world” stuff. I liked it enough that I’ll read the next one.

The story was fine but poorly implemented. It does very little to distinguish itself from other LitRPGs.
The writing style was bland and it didn’t get better.
The characters quickly fall into stereotypes and the twist at the end wasn’t enough to keep me interested in reading the next one.
A perfectly vanilla and tame book for those getting started in the genre looking for an easy read.

Really interesting. Starts as a system book and is remarkably interesting. Real stakes. Then it takes a different turn which I wasn’t sure I’d like but I did. Looking forward to book 2!

His first book, and my first delve into the RPGlit genre. Vastly improves in the second half (I nearly put it down at the beginning due to repetition and the unfamiliar genre), but let's see how the author approaches his next volume.

Pretty good book.

Overall I thought that the book was pretty good but world building at least for now seems a bit off, almost like the author started with one idea then changed his mind in the middle of the book. I will definitely read the next book n the series.
