Third tango with Shana Merchant drags us into two different mysteries:
Killing of Hope Oberon: a convicted governmental officer along with her three friends for defrauding the government during bringing a wind farm to their local community is the first one! Hope had so many enemies, getting death threats from environmental groups. One of the environmentalists may take this threat too far!

And second mystery includes ongoing big mystery of Blake Bram: a ruthless serial killer and abductor of Shana who was once upon a time the trickster cousin Abe and whose fixation on Shay’s life is getting stronger at each second.

Shana teams up with her longtime partner Tim Wellington, investigating both cases, hardly restraining her unresolved feelings to her partner.

She still suspects the death of Hope might be related with the cat- mouse game Bram has been playing with her. Each second his stalking tendencies are getting out of control , breaking in Shana’s house, leaving gifts related with their childhood times and clues pointing his possible next victim’s identity.

Shana should keep her loved ones in distance for protecting them against the unpredictable jealousy of him.

On the other hand, the investigation of Hope’s death raises more political conflicts which feed bottled up grudges and long time revenge plans of locals.

Are both cases connected? Could Shana get upper hand to defeat Bram at his own game?

I was about to give four stars this book but the second half of the book, increasing high tension about Shana’s unfinished business with her cousin, revelations about the big secrets and impactful ending were so intense, heart wrenching and riveting! I literally had hard time to put the book down!

This book was more emotional, dark, heart throbbing than the other two books of the series. I liked Shana’s evolving throughout those journeys. At first book she was unreliable and broken character who was still nursing her traumatic experience she’s had in expanse ruining the entire case she and Tim were investigating. But at this book she’s wiser, stronger, braver. I loved to witness her self improvement and I also supported TIMSHA since he helped Shana to get rid of her dysfunctional relationship with her narcissistic ex.

Overall: this was one of my fastest reads! I’m rounding up 4.5 stars to 5 islander, obsessive, exciting, wild ride stars!

Looking forward to read more adventures of Shana and Tim in near future!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Severn House for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

**4.5-stars rounded up**

Dead Wind is the third book in Tessa Wegert's Shana Merchant series. I really enjoyed the first two books of the series and am happy to report this installment is my favorite yet!

Following Senior Investigator, Shana Merchant, and her partner, Tim Wellington, this series delivers solid Police Procedural action and intrigue.

The setting is the Thousand Lakes region of upstate New York, which sits on the border to Canada. In fact, in Dead Wind, the body that kicks off our mystery is actually found on Wolfe Island in Canada, at the base of a wind turbine.

Shana has an uneasy feeling about the case from the start. When it turns out that the victim is actually from their own community, it starts to hit real close to home. They need to solve this one.

Both Shana and Tim are concerned that the monster from Shana's past, serial killer, Blake Bram, may be back to playing his old games. It's far from cut and dry though, there's a lot of other possibilities.

I was so happy to be returning to this series. Wegert always does a great job of pacing her mysteries and this one is no exception. I was interested and engaged from start-to-finish.

These books are layered as well, which I appreciate. There's always the main crime that is being investigated, but additionally, Shana has a super intriguing past and that has been incrementally revealed over the course of these first three books.

This one had some local politics involved, hidden secrets and family drama. What elevates it for me though, is the shadow of Blake Bram lurking around every corner. That element ups the stakes and makes it all feel a bit more dangerous.

While I would normally say that most Adult Mystery series can be read in any order, or even as standalone novels, I would highly recommend reading this series in order. I feel that's the most impactful way to take these stories in.

Shana and Tim are both fantastic main characters to follow. I am hoping this series lasts for a long time, but I'm not sure how many books are actually slated for the series.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Severn House, for providing me a copy to read and review. I appreciate the opportunity!

This is the third installment in the Shana Merchant series, and you definitely need to read these books in order or you'll be lost.

I really liked that this wrapped things up well in the end. All of the loose ends are tied up and the mysteries are solved. Shana is still on the hunt for Abe/Bram, and there is also another death that occurs near by. Are the two related?

What didn't work so well for me was that this book was a bit slower paced and didn't have as much action as the first two. There weren't any major surprises. However, Wegert is a fantastic writer and I couldn't help but be pulled into the story, because I have been long anticipating the ultimate resolution of the case that started in Death in the Family and continued with The Dead Season. Shana is a strong heroine and a compelling main character, I have been rooting for her throughout the series and was not disappointed with her overall character arc.

I do recommend this series, especially if you enjoy police procedurals and books about creepy serial killers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Tessa Wegert is back with book three in the Shana Merchant series!

About the book: Senior Investigator Shana Merchant must dredge up dark secrets and old grudges if she's to solve the murder of a prominent local citizen in the Thousand Islands community she now calls home.

If you haven’t read the series, Shana is a formidable, resilient investigator who has escaped terrifying encounters in the past; someone close to her family is a serial killer. She’s always on the run (literally and figuratively), but yet puts her whole heart into the cases she’s trying to solve.

Her latest victim is someone she knows, and her death seems to be a hit directly at Shana. That won’t stop her from solving this murder; it actually drives her even more.

Tessa Wegert has delivered another chilling and suspenseful page-turner; exciting, tense, and five-star worthy! I saw in one place this may be the last book, but I sure hope it’s not!

I received a gifted copy.

Tessa Wegert's upcoming book, Dead Wind , is a multi-layered thriller, full of suspense and emotion. It's just so good!!

In the third book in her series featuring Senior Investigator Shana Merchant, Wegert hits a home run with this story of vulnerability and familial legacy. This series truly gets better and better and I enjoyed my return to upstate New York’s Thousand Islands.

When a body is discovered propped up against a wind turbine on Wolfe Island, the identification of the victim throws the local community into turmoil. Shana and her partner Tim need to figure out who was responsible for the murder, which is no easy feat given that the case involves local politics, environmental issues, and secrets lost through the years.

But as they try to catch this killer, both Shana and Tim need to figure out if it’s someone local or if it’s another strike by serial killer Blake Bram, who has been playing a game of cat-and-mouse with Shana for a while now. And when her aunt hires a private investigator to find what happened to her long-lost cousin, Shana wonders whether the house of cards of secrets she’s been building around her is going to fall down, endangering those she cares about.

This series is really fantastic. Wegert is a terrific writer, imbuing her thrillers with real emotional complexity as well as such evocative imagery that you can feel the fog and the chill around you. These books are a little slow-burn at the start but that helps to build atmosphere and mood.

Even if you’re not into mystery/thriller series, I’d encourage you to pick these books up, and start with Death in the Family , the first book. Hopefully you’ll become a fan, too!

My thanks to Severn House, Tessa Wegert and Netgalley.
This rating has nothing to do with the story itself, but with it being an ongoing series that reader's might want to keep up with.
As usual, when starting a book in the middle of a series, I'm always wary. Oftentimes though, you can pick a book up that's part of a series and feel like you haven't missed a beat.
This? I was definitely missing quite a bit. Should I read the earlier series? Um..?
For me that would be a resounding no.
I think it's just an issue of me not quite giving a shit about a series. I'm old, and I have my own authors to read. I only add newbies if I'm loving the characters. I'll pass on this.

Dead Wind is the 3rd book in the Shana Merchant series and they are best read in order. I missed book 2 but I did manage to pick the story up without too much trouble. I will be going back to read it though as ai really enjoy this fantastic series.

I love a good police procedural with a strong female lead character. Shana and Tim’s relationship and bond is interesting to see develop 5rough the books. And a serial killer with a strong link to our main character, love it so much. These books are written so well, sucking up you into Shana’s world and thoughts.

I hope there will be more o come. Thanks to Severn House and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.

When the body of a Jane Doe is found strangled on a small island off the Canadian coast, Investigators Shana Merchant and Tim Wellington are called to assist. But when they get their first look at the body, both feel as though she looks vaguely familiar yet they can’t place the memory. It doesn’t, however, take long for an ID to come through and with it the small community surrounding Shana’s home of Alexandra Bay is sent into shock.

It appears the victim is none other than the daughter of a highly regarded former mayor who just so happens to have also entered politics herself. A recent addiction to a local city council, the woman had high hopes of joining her father one day in the family business. But her dreams were not to be after the lure of corruption. Now, her death is apt to send their community into upheaval as the police begin to dig through the woman’s sordid past.

Shana, however, isn’t so sure that her death is quite so open and shut. Eighteen months ago, she was abducted by serial killer Blake Bram, a fact she kept hidden from almost everyone in her life. Despite escaping his clutches, Shana still feels sure that he’s not done with her yet. Is Bram killing women in her area in a sick game of cat-and-mouse with the great police investigator? Or is she simply being paranoid?

The third book in the Shana Merchant series, Dead Wind was yet another triumph by Tessa Wegert. Focusing on the both the manhunt for the ever elusive serial killer, Blake Bram, and the mysterious death of a corrupt politician, I was memorized from the start. A fact that I’ve come to equate with Wegert.

One of the strongest aspects of this novel (and the series as a whole) was the stunning character development and wholly genuine relationships. I was also taken by the growing love affair between the two main characters of Shana and Tim. Trying to balance it with both their work and the fear that Shana had surrounding Bram’s presence on the periphery of her life was a tantalizing game of chance.

The red herrings were also thick in this one, which is something I always love. Somehow, Wegert managed to finely craft a hybrid of crime fiction and thriller that had me rocketing through the pages. And let’s not forget the dark and foreboding element of Bram lurking in the shadows. It definitely upped the stakes as Shana tried to learn the truth.

There was only one teeny, tiny flaw in my opinion, and it lay in that truly epic climax and conclusion. While I could perhaps see how it could have happened in real life the way it was written, it felt just a bit over-the-top as well. Did it ruin the the plot for me? Not a chance. But it did give me pause, so I felt obligated to mention it.

All in all, Dead Wind was yet another quick, easy read that somehow also managed to be compelling and addictive. With only one more in the series already published, I’m both dying to read it and sad to have the series be over even for a short while. Here’s hoping The Kind to Kill manages to live up to my now high expectations. But then, I’d be shocked if it doesn’t. Rating of 4.5 stars.

Thank you so much to Tessa Wegert for my copy of Dead Wind. You guys know I love this locked room mystery style series, and the third book in the series is no exception. The third book continued Shana’s search for her serial killer cousin Bram. A body is discovered on Wolf Island, and it has Bram’s name all over it. Not only does Shana know the victim, but she feels it is Bram taunting her. She tries to balance solving the case, searching for her cousin, and dealing with a new attraction she has to her partner. But will she be able to catch her cousin, or is it too late?

Thoughts: I love Tessa Wegert’s writing style. She knows how to draw a reader in right from the beginning and capture their attention. I loved both the current mystery of who killed Hope and the overarching mystery of where Blake Bram is. It’s a fun cat and mouse mystery that ties together in a great way.

This book is both character and plot driven, as Shana really develops throughout the three books. It is fun to learn about her and her background throughout the series. I love the stories in each book as well. I highly recommend this series, and would also tell potential readers to start with Death in the Family to get the full scope of the story. 5-stars!

Briefly - Definitely readable but maybe read from the start of the series.

In full
Set in the Thousand Islands area of America this is the third book about Senior Investigator Shana Merchant. The setting is an area of small communities where people know each other. Grudges can be held for a long time. A body is found on an island (on the Canadian side) and Shana and her fellow investigator, Tim, are sent to investigate any possible USA connection. Indeed there is a possibility that the crime might have been committed by someone who is not local at all. Some 18 months earlier Shana was held captive by a serial killer in New York. She only just escaped with her life and it is possible he has followed her upstate.

This book follows the investigation into the murder as well as Shana's life more generally. Local politics and the environment are aspects of this as is Thousand Islands life more generally. The possibility that the murder was committed by Shana's abductor is always in the background. If he is hiding out in this rather remote area how is he doing it?

I did like the way the setting was used. The fact that the area is very attractive but can at times be rather spooky was well done. A number of characters roam the pages of this. Some are more important, some less so. However I didn't really get a feeling that they were well fleshed out. Shana's character wasn't bad though seemed to lack some depth for me given this is her 3rd appearance in a book. The same really applies to Tim for me. I felt I wanted more from a number of these. Shana's boss would be a good example. She seemed an interesting character but I never found out enough for my taste.

Bram Blake may well be an obsessed serial killer with an interest in Shana. However it is quite clear throughout this book that Shana is equally obsessed with Blake. The narrative kept returning to him and, at times, it seemed to overwhelm the story. I certainly can't say that this book was bad at all. Equally though I really didn't find that it gripped me. In general it felt rather superficial. That is not to say that parts of it were not good. I guess it would probably have been better to read the two earlier books first to get the background.

Note - I received an advance digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair review

I’m so invested in this series and that will be my downfall.

I adored the first book, Death in the Family. It was one of my favorite books of 2020. I borrowed it from the library and loved it so much that I bought a copy to own. I will praise it til my dying days. But I cannot in good faith connect that work with the effort given here.

In her debut, Tessa Wegert brilliantly weaved a compelling mystery with a background of nuanced characters. Those nuances turned into a cliffhanger for a 2nd book where I was hoping the same level of intrigue would exist. The result was underwhelming, but more importantly, nothing was resolved between our protag Shana Merchant and the antagonist, Bram.

Enter book 3, Dead Wind. This third installment was lazy. All telling, no showing. Stilted dialogue. Convenient plot points. C-level writing. Boring “mystery” that concluded laughably.

The cover was beautiful, but you need to replace it with someone yawning. Sadly, it would describe this better – a massive snooze fest.

Wegert has demonstrated that she is a brilliant writer. I would love to see her drop this series and start fresh with something new. Go back to Death in the Family and rediscover what worked so effectively.

Tessa Wegert is the author of three Shana Merchant mysteries with Dead Wind her latest release. Shana is a former New York police detective now residing upstate in the Thousand Islands region. In earlier books Shana had encountered a serial killer, so when a dead body is discovered on Wolf Island it raises the possibility of his involvement. As the investigation intensifies, it appears Shana may have caught the attention of a stalker or is it connected to her current murder case? Local politics, history and secrets from the past are unearthed, as these connections complicate the murder mystery and may even reveal Shana’s own hidden past. An enjoyable police procedural with a three-and-a-half-star read rating. With thanks to Legend Press the author, for an uncorrected advanced copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

Great police procedural story.
A body is found on Wolfe Island under the wind turbines.
For Shana is more like a.message that a simple murder. Lots of secrets in the comunity so is not going to be easy to solve the murder.

5 stars!! This series never disappoints!

If you’ve been following me for a few years, you know that this series has been a favorite of mine! Each subsequent book has been as good as the last and I can always count on a 5 star read and it makes me happy because Tessa is one of the nicest people. It’s nice for good people to achieve success and her books have been completely embraced by the bookstagram community (as they should)!

What I love the most about this series (besides it’s dependability) is that there is no annoying re-hashing of old plot points. She sprinkles cookie crumb reminders and then moves on to the new plot. She also amazingly makes it easy to just pick up without having read the others - which, for someone like me who is super long winded (no pun here 🤣), I have no idea how she reviews things from previous books so concisely - that’s a talent all it’s own in my opinion. I also love how much her main character Shana has progressed and grown in each book. Her character development is flawless and I seriously had chills at certain points in this book. I read a lot of it on the elliptical and I have documented proof of my heart rate rising (and I don’t think it was all exercise if you get my point!).

There’s so much to love here, it’s a great mystery, with great characters, a part of the country that doesn’t get written about ad nauseam AND you’re supporting a really nice and genuine person. It’s a WIN WIN for all of us 👏🏻👏🏻So if you’re looking for a new series or haven’t picked this up, but you have a book mountain on the floor (like me 😘😉), be sure to pick this out of the pile sooner rather than later!

Thanks to Netgalley and Severn House for the gifted copy!

With this third installment in her Shana Merchant series, Wegert delivers an atmospheric, tense, and utterly creepy story of a police detective determined to stop a serial killer from striking again – a serial killer who happens to be her cousin. The author brings a fresh perspective to the serial killer story, focusing less on voyeurism and more on the lasting impact of those touched by crime. She backs that up with a solid whodunnit that will keep you guessing. All that, paired with beautiful imagery from the isolated upstate New York setting of a Thousand Islands, makes for a killer read!

Perfectly binge worthy police procedural series!!

Shana Merchant is back. She and her partner, Tim Wellington have a brand new crime to solve. And just like in the first two books, it's going to take some serious skill to find the answers. Plus, a familiar character may have made his way back from book two...

I really enjoy Tessa's writing style. She pulls you in from the very beginning and holds your attention while the story unfolds.

If you love a mix of plot, and character driven reads that serve mystery, twists, and a serious game of cat and mouse, read this series!

I highly encourage reading these books in order. There is SO much that happens in the first two books! Just do it! :)

Im so glad I found Tessa Wegert on one of my random book shopping sprees! Im also very pleased with how this series ended, Shana was a very likable character she had a lot of depth to her albeit she is very stubborn and sometimes too much of a do it myself person but I love how she developed throughout the series and Tim as well they compliment each other wonderfully and to be honest revenge was served in the end in my opinion while it may seem cruel to others when they read it but this character I do not pity.. This book had a lot more politics which I wasn't a huge fan of because it did seem to take up a lot of potentially good Bram time. But that did NOT make it any less enjoyable I wish the cat and mouse game with these two didnt end but I really hope to see more from Tessa Wegert!

I feel so lucky to have received a free copy of this book from BooksForward PR and NetGalley. Dead Wind is the first book I've read in this series (although it is the third written in the series). Finishing this book definitely made me add the first two books to my TBR. Now that I know about one of the characters, Blake Bram, I need to know more about him.

Full of creepy, obsessive and revengeful vibes, this story walks the reader through two separate criminal instances that could be related, or could not be. Throughout the book, the pendulum swings both ways. The book starts five months after a child kidnapping victim is rescued. The kidnapper is the same person who kidnapped and held detective Shana Merchant before she was able to escape with her life. Still at large, the search for Bram is ongoing. Shana has moved to a new precinct where she is not known as a kidnapping victim. This story opens with the murder of a local politician, Hope Oberon, who's family has a long political history, but who was recently investigated for corruption. The fact that she was found on the other side of the Canadian border, on a wind turbine seems at odds with Bram's past crimes. But Shana can't ever count him out, or unfortunately forget that he is still at large.

"It isn't that simple, of course. People aren't good or bad, generous or selfish, thoughtful or inconsiderate. Most people, I've learned, are as deep as the river, and you can find all manner of unexpected things in the weeds."

Shana and her partner Tim obviously have some sort of a complicated romantic history. They both do their best to ignore the tension and focus on the murder they are investigating. Their characters played well against each other. Shana, a great detective, but one virtually blinded by her obsession with catching Bram, and Tim, overprotective with good relationships with the town's people and knowledge of its history.

Without giving too much away, this story has perfect pace, full of smart clues and interesting characters. It is full of hold your breath moments and twists that I didn't see coming. I really enjoyed this one - but I would recommend starting with book one. I would have liked knowing more about how Tim and Shana's relationship started, more about Trey's kidnapping and more about Shana's journey prior to this book. This is definitely a series I would highly recommend!

Dead Wind is the third book of the Shana Merchant series. That being said, I highly recommend that the first two books be read beforehand. Though I managed to get the gist of Shana’s background and history, I still felt that several pieces of the puzzle were missing.

The characters of likeable enough but I felt that they could have been fleshed out more. Perhaps they were developed in the prior novels. But I wouldn’t know that. In any event, I really didn’t care too much for any of the characters, except maybe Tim.

Insofar as the storyline is concerned, the narrative and outcome is predictable. I didn’t think there were any notable plot twists that made me want to stay up all night to finish the book. Truthfully speaking, it is a slow read and at times boring. I ended up skipping and skimming the latter part of the book to get to the finish line.

I’m not new to police procedurals and some of the narrative in Dead Wind just didn’t make sense to me. I think that the logic and sleuthing aspects could be improved upon — taking clues from authors like Tess Gerritsen, Preston & Child, and maybe even clues from true crime authors like Paul Holes.

Overall, Dead Wind is a decent read. Two satisfactory stars.

I received a digital ARC from BooksForward through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

First, I want to say thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and @tessawegert for providing me with a ecopy of Dead Wind for this tour!

This book picks up right where book 2 left off and then jumps right to 5 months later which I loved. It’s once again told in first person from Shana’s POV. This book is both plot and character driven which I love.

Side note, I LOVE Shana. Once again, Tessa has proved why she has became an auto-buy author for me. Her writing style is so smooth and she is able to captivate her readers from the very first page. I stumbled upon this series through @suzyapprovedbooktours and I have been hooked ever since. I loved the characters brought back from book 2 and thoroughly enjoyed the new characters we were introduced to. I was in the edge of my seat the entire read and it had me continuously guessing and trying to solve the mystery. Which I didn’t fully because wow what a wild and amazing ending! Did I immediately message the author to find out if I will have more? Yes, yes I did. I need more of this series because I’m not done with Shana Merchant yet. I highly recommend this series, you won’t be disappointed!

Dead Wind is the 3rd book in the Senior Investigator Shana Merchant series written by Tessa Wegert and it is my first in this series. Shana arrives on the scene with fellow investigator Tim Wellington when a body is found on Wolfe Island, Ontario. It's Hope Oberon, a convicted government officer of development.

Set in Alexandria Bay, in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York, the story had me captivated from the very first page. Tessa Wegert's writing style is smooth and her plotting is A1. Local politics, history and secrets from the past are unearthed, the connections complicating the murder mystery and may even reveal Shana’s own hidden past. This taut read kept me guessing, but I think I would benefit from reading books one and two which I fully intend to do.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Severn House via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Set in a small town in upstate New York a body is discovered propped up against a wind turbine.
Whodunnit? Was it a crazed environmentalist? Was it done for the almighty dollar? Or was it Bram, Shane's serial killer cousin?
Shana Merchant Book 3 was a well done police procedural. Read the first two in the series to get a better feel for the main characters.

My one complaint
Shana is a NYC detective who is being hunted by a serial killer.
She is staying at a secluded bungalow.
No surveillance cameras? Video doorbell? Motion activated camera outside the cabin?

Snoop Dogg could show her just how easy it is to get the Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro protecting her home.

Shana Joins her old partner Tim Wellington on Canadian soil to research and study the discovered body on Wolfe Island. While working together Shanna tries hard to control her feelings for the team and focus on the case.
Once the victim’s identity is revealed, their community in the Thousand Islands of Upstate New York is uprooted with all the secrets. Not Only Shanna think she knows the victim, but it has Bram’s name all over it.
Will Shanna be able to catch her cousin, or is it too late?
I liked how Shanna’s Character developed more in this book, the story is both plot and character-driven.
A chilling, suspenseful page-turner, and fast read.

Dead Wind is another atmospheric suspense/police procedural that picks up on the cliff hanger from The Dead Season. It was a painful wait trust me. When a body is discovered on Wolfe Island, Shana and Tim find themselves on Canadian soil to assist in the investigation and figure out who the victim is and where she’s from. With the identity of the victim, a small community is suddenly uprooted and past secrets are dredged up. While trying to solve the new crime while still searching for Bram, Shana can’t help shake the feeling that he is somehow involved in this.
.
I love how these books are a locked room type mystery within a mystery. Perfectly atmospheric, small community setting and a bit of cat and mouse with plenty of twists and suspects really makes this series a whole package for me. But that’s also the problem, I’ve gotten a bit attached to the characters so after finishing the book I was both happy and sad. I want more Tim and Shana but it seems that this could be the end of the series? Is this the end?
