Tommy Learns A Lesson

Rate this book
Tommy’s past sins have caught up to him at last.

A blackmail letter demanding hundreds of times the amount shoved under his mattress threatens his first real, honest-to-goodness romance. With no hope of paying the unknown blackmailer, he reluctantly turns to his friends Clara and Lucas for help.

Can they work out who sent the note in time to save his fledgeling love, or is Tommy destined to wander the world alone and heartbroken… forever?

***

A standalone short story linked to The Lucas Rathbone Mysteries, Tommy Learns A Lesson is set in 1920s London and uses British English throughout.

There's also an Exclusive Bonus Scene from when Lucas and Clara were teenagers, which includes a Christmas party, spiked punch, an unwelcome kiss, Lucas getting very toungue-tied, and trouble on the horizon. The incident is extremely briefly mentioned in the main story, and turned out too adorable not to write and include as a bonus in the book!

*** Praise for Saffron Amatti "If you like a cosy mystery, if you like humor, if you like good writing and endearing characters, Lucas Rathbone Mysteries are for you." "These mysteries aren't just cozies, they are studies in atmosphere and characterization. With a deft hand and an easy wit, Saffron Amatti never stops surprising the reader [...]The only criticism I have is that I want to read more!" “I could imagine it playing out like a prime-time serial TV show and I settled in for a little murder, a little humour, and the bad guy getting caught. Nailed it!” “This is what mysteries should be.”

Saffron Amatti is the author of the Lucas Rathbone Mysteries, a series of historical cozy mysteries with a ghostly twist set in 1920s England.

She lives in a rather pretty village in Derbyshire, UK, where she spends an unhealthy amount of time thinking about how to kill people and (nearly) get away with it.

This is almost entirely in relation to her writing, but she keeps her family on their toes by throwing a little doubt in occasionally.

Morally gray Tommy Kilbourne is my favorite secondary character in the Lucas Rathbone mysteries, and boy was I excited to see him get the spotlight (though he steals it quite often in other books in the series). Serial playboy Tommy is smitten! But someone seems out to destroy him before he even gets the opportunity to declare his intentions. Who would be behind such blackmail? Well, as it turns out, seems like half the population of London has reason for grievance. But it's up to sassy Clara and grumpy Lucas to solve the case and save Tommy's heart.

Highly recommend this entertaining and delightful short story!

Lively Banter – with a Twist!

Fans of Saffron Amatti’s Lucas Rathbone Mystery Series will love this short story! While it certainly can be read as a standalone, if you’ve enjoyed Amatti’s earlier books, this work is even better.

Right away I was caught up in the lively banter of the three “main” characters: Lucas Rathbone, Clara Jenkins, and Tommy Kilbourne – the subject of the title. Amatti constructs her characters’ dialogues with the kind of snappy rhythm a reader can’t resist. The author gets high marks for her carefully crafted repartee!

The plot of “Tommy Learns a Lesson” moves swiftly – it is a short story after all. The drama doesn’t soar too high in this newest adventure in the series, so the resolution is believable. And yet, Amatti dishes out a tasty twist at the end of the tale readers won’t see coming! It’s a fun little cherry on top of a delicious cozy mystery.

Treat yourself and check out Saffron Amatti’s series. If you enjoy British mysteries, cute couples, and devilish “bad” boys, you will definitely have fun getting to know the trio found in this latest installment.
