Fearless and unsentimental, this remarkable collection encapsulates a whole lifetime. Sometimes serious but always fun, these poems are accepting in the face of heartbreak and often ground world events (such as the assassination of JF Kennedy) in among the business of being human. A Square of Sunlight has a wise understanding about how people work that can only be gained from living life to the full with honesty and joy.
Born in Cleveland. Lifelong book lover, and class librarian in 6th grade. Writing professionally since 1975 graduation from Northwestern, with a degree in English. Staff writer for the Wall Street Journal for 17 years in Chicago and New York, covering beats from financial futures and agriculture to the business of the arts and publishing. Freelancing since 1994: writing 5 books and hundreds of magazine articles, mostly about family traditions and modern quilting. Lecture all over the country -- love to talk about my passions!!! Love to teach beginners how to quilt. Love to read, see beautiful things, make things with my own hands, walk and eat good food.
I had read at least 4 of these poems without realising I’d read them. These are poems that tutors had pointed out were excellent examples of the particular style they were teaching me.
Whilst I enjoy the simplistic not over poetic language Meg Cox uses - Larkinesque in places. Personally I yearn for some ambiguity, an alternative route to follow. There’s a great deal of pleasure in these poems, and well crafted, a joy to read & in some cases rediscover.
