Never Really Over

Rate this book
A gripping page-turner that will transport you from the frigid wastelands of conflict-hit Bosnia to the shimmering heat of beautiful Sicily. As a former member of the military, Aron had seen his share of conflict. His battles should have been behind him as a bright future beckoned. Then a rare medical event left him in a coma, fighting for his life, and his sanity. This story is one of survival. But more than that, it is a testimony to the indelible nature of the human spirit, and our ability to heal in the face of all odds.
Sometimes our darkest moments can give us the strength we need to fight our way back from adversity.

Aron has a remarkable personal story, ANd he tells is so so well. This book details his journey through ICU-induced psychosis. I think my favorite element is that the reader is in the dark about key details and elements until the very end - even the reader experiences a tiny bit of what it's like to lack context and the whole of the experience. This is actually the whole point of Aron's story. In an altered state of reality like ICU delirium and half-consciousness, your brain desperately tries to make sense of the whole, and so it will fill in gaps with inappropriate meanings and understandings.
This book is making me a better ICU nurse, and I'm utilizing some pages as well as a YouTube video he made in some of my teaching curriculum for nurses cross-training into the ICU. Aron is part of our next frontier for making things better.

Raw and gripping

You can’t make this stuff up! A powerful recollection of one man’s shocking journey through (and after) intensive care with a deadly infection, and the powerful support from his family and medical team. Aron introduces the reader to the reality of intensive care delirium (psychosis) and post intensive care syndrome, while clarifying the individual story of each ICU survivor will have both some similarities and significant differences. He relates his tale with brutal honesty and unexpected humor, interwoven with past life experiences. A good read for anyone interested in better understanding the impact of critical illness requiring intensive care. We need more true stories from both survivors and their family/friends to add to Aron’s!

Brilliantly written, and very accurate depiction of power of EMDR

A truly brilliant book. Powerfully written and paced, unputdownable, an authentic and accurate description of both the inward experience of PTSD and the power of EMDR to shift the deepest trauma. Declaring an interest here as an EMDR Consultant and trainer, and colleague of the therapist who treated Aron so well. Really good too to read such a precise description of how EMDR works. Highly recommended.

A gritty, grisly read. Kudos to the Author for his authentic depiction of his hellish experiences. Can't have been easy to dredge all that gunk up, explain the medical details with precision and get it all down in the form of a fascinating story. Usually, I can't get through such explicitly horrendous tales, but I felt I owed to him since he bravely managed to share it with me. Thanks Aron. Wishing you peace, love and tranquility. You've earned it my friend.
