Dear Charles,

You have been gone for more than a few years, now. I have yet to gather the courage to stand at your stone, to read your name on it. I prefer to see it on the covers of your works, on the return address of the letters you sent me, scrawled out in your sprawling hand on the inscription pages of the books you mailed; ink is blood; it means you still live. Stone, though... It is a deathly thing. It would be as cold to my touch as those last years of silence between us. Mine was a hard love.

You were a great mentor. You helped to make me happen. I am so, so sorry I could not be more to you than a kind word, an admirer of your work, a frustration, a disappointment. It was all I could give.

A hundred years from now your works will still be read, the poem you dedicated to me among them.

Your stone can keep its dry grimness, its death. Ink is blood. Thus, you live.

Yours,
Brian
