Not Well Done

When I saw this book at a book review site, it intrigued me. Unfortunately, I didn't find it well done. The book isn't logically organized. You would think basic knots would be the first knot section, but it is not. For some reason, the author starts with end loops before moving on to basic knots. (By the way, the largest knot section is for ones used on boats.) Each knot is shown in several steps, using dark tan rope on a light tan background. I wish at times the contrast was better between the background and the rope. I also thought, at times, the author did not show the accurate breakpoint between steps. The steps should have been labeled about what you are actually doing in it, as it wasn't always easy to see. After the knot-tying illustrations comes a brief section summarizing what you do, the knot’s uses, its history perhaps, and the advantages of using it. Unfortunately, the author assumes you already have a lot of knot knowledge, using knot-tying vocabulary I was not familiar with. What the heck is a bight? The author doesn't let us know. (Yes, I could look it up, but specialized books like this shouldn’t make you do an internet search every couple of minutes!) A glossary before the illustrated guide would have been helpful. Oddly enough, too, sometimes he uses a knot further in the book to explain something in an early knot. Not terribly helpful. I think the book also should have had headnotes before the illustrations to get a better sense of it before the illustrations. If you have an interest in learning how to tie different knots, I suggest you find another, better book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
