This book is meant as a companion to forget the alamo, not a substitution for it, and in no way identifies itself with the original author.

Every country needs a founding myth, and given that Texas was a country before it was a state, it's no surprise that its stories are vexing. There is no battle in Texas history more crucial than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels fought for independence from Mexico in a blaze of glory, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war. However, as Forget the Alamo clearly demonstrates, that version of events owes more to fantasy than reality. The story of the Alamo was forgotten and corrupted through time, much as the location of the Alamo was left in ruins for decades, The efforts of Tejanos—Texans of Mexican ancestry who fought alongside Anglo rebels—were erased from history, and the origins of the battle over Mexico's push to abolish slavery were obscured. Forget the Alamo is a fascinating film that tells the historical tale of the battle against the backdrop of Texas' war for independence, then illustrates how the myth of the Alamo was created in the Jim Crow South of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As unsettling as it may be for some, commemorating the Alamo has traditionally been associated with commemorating whiteness.
