Despite the rain, Jill, Sam, and Pam head outside for an afternoon of fun donned with their slickers and umbrellas in hand, but when the hail begins to fall, the threesome decide that a dry afternoon in the library may be just as much fun after all.
Not a phenomenal one - rather bland illustrations, personally - and the text is kinda repetitive for the adult reader, but that's good for little ones building reading skills, so can't complain too much. That said, it's still a good one to pull out for Rain or Library storytime themes. It actually was raining for our last storytime on rain (not planned, just how it worked out) and the kids enjoyed comparing what the characters were doing to what they were doing/had done to come out in the rain - right down to ending at the library choosing books!
Rainy Day is a modern picture book that is also a fiction book. It includes some rhyming words and the main character’s names also rhyme. The plot of this book is about four alligators who are trying to find an activity to do in the rain because they are bored. The resolution of this story is them finding that the best place to be is at the library. This book would be very good for buddy reading because four students can be assigned to each alligator and one can be a narrator. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I think this book is appropriate for children ages 3-7. The story strongly encourages leisure reading for young kids and using their imagination to entertain themselves. Since the characters in the book are animals that talk, children reading the story will engage in imaginative thinking. I also noticed a rhyming scheme, which will help the kids phonemic awareness skills.
Good rhyming book for story time! Bright, bold illustrations really kept the kids attention. This book is a natural fro National Poetry Month, spring, and, of course, rainy days! Kids really enjoy the tale!
This book was very boring. The pacing was quick; the tone was sad, happy, then content. It was very predictable. The setting took place inside, then outside in the rain, then eventually in a library.
It’s another rainy day and Sam, Pam, Will, and Jill are bored. So the crocodiles put on their rain hats, boots, and coats, grab their umbrellas and off they go. Their adventures take them through dense fog, to a mini-golf park, and into a game of baseball. They’re having a great time in the rain, but when it starts to hail they know the weather has them beat. They hurry into the nearest building, the library! There they each find the perfect book and settle into a quiet nook to read.
The rhyming text of the book is geared toward early readers, with lots of repetition of phrases and words. The illustrations are whimsical; there’s something delightful about crocodiles in rain gear. I also love the alligator’s car, a combination of a Mini Cooper and a golf cart.
Lakin, P. (2007). Rainy Day. New York: Dial Books for Young Readers.
"Rainy Day" by Patricia Lakin and illustrated by Scott Nash is a fun story geared toward early childhood readers. This story follows for alligators who are searching for things to do on a rainy day. The book follows the alligators as they do a variety of activities before finally ending up at a library. There they find a perfect book for each of them to enjoy. The book as lots of rhyming and repetition that is easy for young readers to follow. The illustrations are good and at times very funny. I think children would really enjoy this book. I would recommend this read.
We own this picture book, so I get to read it from time to time, especially when it's raining. I just don't think there's anything I like about this book, except that the illustrations aren't awful. I find myself always editing the text when I read, shortening or changing words in the text, or leaving off the "Bill said's" that seem to be everywhere.
Maybe it's my awesome editing that keeps my five-year-old interested! :)
Or maybe it's just that thinking about jumping in rain puddles is so very fun!
The text in this storybook is written in rhyme and repeatative words to help a merging learning reader to read on their own. Will, Jill, Sam and Pam. They all want to do something on a rainy day. But their plans all 'flop' until they decide to go to the library! A book to encourage reading and library usage.
I just love the fun and humorous pictures of this series. I love the good times these alligators have together.
**Talking points - What's your favorite thing to do on rainy days? How do rainy days make you feel? Who are 3 of your good friends that you love having fun with? What are some of the funnest days you can remember? Why were they so fun?
I love any book that ends up in the library. This is a fun story, and inspires creativity and fun, even on a dreary day. The sentences are short and easy to read, but I'm not a fan of all the shouting in the dialogue. Otherwise, it's a great book to read aloud with children.
Sam, Pam, Will and Jill attempt to figure out what to do on a rainy day and end up at the library in this rhyming picture book. Great book for reading to younger children, although most of the short lines end in exclamations!
If the weather is ever bad when I become a teacher, which I am sure it will be, I am reading this book. It gives students options of what to do if it is rainy. I think encouraging reading, which this book does, is great. Students need to know how important reading is to their everyday life.
Very cute illustrations. I'm sure that fans of Mo Willems would also find this a fun book, because of the simplistic, repetitious text and minimal drawings. Having said that, I did skip quite a few of the Sam, Pam, Will, and Jill, as it was getting a bit too repetitious.
A cute, easy-to-read story of the four crocodiles who have a bit of cabin fever so they head outside, even though it's raining. Great book for beginning readers because the fonts are big and even though it can be repetitive, the narration is still engaging.
Crocodile siblings Sam, Pam, Will, and Jill find fun, despite the rain. They wind up somewhere warm and inviting...let's just say librarians everywhere will be pleased.
the characters are trying to find something to do on a rainy day. thgey play outside for awhile and then find themselves at their local library reading and sharing books.
Rain isn't going to stop four little alligators from playing outside and using their imagination to entertainment themselves with the samll surprises that pop up during their excursion.
It wasn't a bad story. I just can't use it as a read aloud. I love that the characters end up at the library at the end. Also, I hesitate to use a book that encourages playing in the rain.
