Through the Sphere: A Science Fiction Adventure About Superhuman Teens Battling Evil As They Return to Earth

Rate this book
For the Coma Kids, life on planet Kern is never dull. If they’re not busy fighting off the Yarm – the plant-eating space creature that threatens to leave their planet barren – they’re trying to escape aliens who want to make them slaves. But in many ways, Kern is better than Earth, where nobody ever understood their abilities of telekinesis and telepathy.

When Anne, one of the coma kids, disappears, her friends fear the worst. They didn’t realize she had walked through the Sphere, returning her to Earth, putting her in grave danger. Not bearing to leave Anne alone, the teens walk through the Sphere and travel back to Earth to find her.

Back on Earth, the teens’ superhuman abilities create major problems—hearing everyone’s thoughts and dreams makes it almost impossible to eat or sleep. And as their skills advance, the more difficult it becomes to relate to others. Take Alex, for example. As the youngest Harvard Law student, the seventeen-year-old struggles to fit in, and his drinking spirals out of control.

Even though the teenagers do some brilliant things like creating a “sensor blanket” that instantly reveals a person’s medical[HV1] statistics, they grapple with challenges of living on Earth, from pregnancy complications and romantic breakups, to tragic accidents and terminal diseases.

Unfortunately, the evil forces that caused the group to escape Earth in the first place still surround them, threatening their lives. As the teens are put to the test, they must grapple with success and failure, friendship and love, new life and loss . . . and death.

Will they ever adjust to life on Earth? And if they stay, will they continue to use their abilities for good – or will they succumb to evil? Find out what happens next in Book Three of the Coma Kids science fiction series Through the Sphere.

I was given book three of this series for review and I found it to be darker than the previous stories. It takes an unusual turn as the coma kids decide to travel through the sphere back to Earth. I could see the reasoning but was surprised because I thought it was to be a completely different story – that utopian idea.

However, their abilities are fascinating and it was good to see how they were used. By this time, the teens have grown up a little more and we see disturbing behaviour – normal for teens or because they can’t handle the abilities? Not all is good and that old evil rears its head. There are battles on many fronts.

I didn’t like some character development, yet I could understand why – having power is a difficult thing and choosing how to use it more so, depending on the personality.

I don’t give spoilers but there are shocking developments and even though the coma kids are more mature than most, I still think some of the situations and decisions are too much for their ages – it’s not a children’s book and maybe not even for YA as some of the themes /language are more for adults in some areas, though younger in others.

Overall, it was an absorbing read, the concept intriguing and though the writing style could be tweaked, it was a worthy story.
