Fashion is an inevitable part of our daily lives, whether we recognize it as such or not. This book, however, deals with a very specific form of fashion, and that is the wardrobe fashion. In particular, with the wardrobe fashion in the West over the last few centuries. Fashion is very closely associated with art, and as such it is not possible to write about it in an exact and entirely objective way. However, it is possible to be systematic about it and remove as much of a subjective taste judgments as possible. In that regard, this book succeeds admirably. Oftentimes accounts of fashion are written in an overinflated flowery language that manages to confuse more than enlighten, but this short introduction eschews all such diffusive narrative and presents its subject in a very matter of fact and accessible style. It focuses on the historic development of the fashion industry, its sources of inspiration and the symbiotic existence that it has with the wider popular culture. Chapter on ethical aspects of fashion examines the negative practices that have been garnering a lot of spotlight recently - the use of fur, the harsh working conditions of many garment workers, and the promotion of stereotypes in advertising. It also talks about the ethical issues that were more prominent in the past, but which still reverberate, such as modesty, and gender and identity aspects of fashion. However, to author's credit, the book does not dwell on any of these issues extensively. In my opinion they have been getting an inordinate amount of traction in the media as it is.

Even, as mentioned earlier, the book deals primarily with Western fashion, the increasing globalization and the interconnectedness of the world means that many non-Westerners are having an increasing impact on the fashion industry. Consequently the book spends a whole chapter on globalization.

Overall, this is a fairly interesting overview of fashion, its history and major trends. Reading it may not make you into a stylish person, but it will is bound to inform and educate.

Thời trang không chì là áo quần, không chỉ là một bộ sưu tập những hình ảnh, những thiết kế, không chỉ là chuyện chúng ta mặc gì, may hay mua ở đâu. Trong cuốn sách này, thời trang được tác giả Rebecca Arnold nhắc đến như một biểu trưng cho một nét văn hóa- văn hóa thị giác và văn hóa vật chất, thời trang soi rọi sự phát triển của lịch sử- xã hội và thời trang còn đặt ra những câu hỏi về đạo đức và luân lý xã hội.

Nội dung được kết cấu khá chặt chẽ và dẫn dắt được độc giả đi qua nhiều vấn đề tưởng chừng như rời rạc nhưng lại có liên quan. Trước tiên là giải thích ngọn nguồn cho sự hình thành và phát triển từ thời trang thiết kế cá nhân sang thời trang may sẵn và thời trang nhanh (như các thương hiệu đang đổ xô về Việt Nam gần đây như Zara, H&M,...) nhằm tạo lợi nhuận và tiếp cận được với hầu hết công chúng. Bên cạnh việc dẫn ra lịch sử thời trang gắn với các biến cố xã hội, các vấn đề về bản sắc cá nhân, về công nghiệp hóa thời trang và về cả đạo đức cũng được đề cập.

CÂU CHUYỆN ĐẠO ĐỨC

Tuy có vẻ như không phải điểm nhấn của sách, nhưng mình lại dừng ở chương đạo đức khá lâu. Mặc dù vẫn cảm thấy có gì đó hơi quá lố khi cho rằng sự phát triển của ngành công nghiệp thời trang có liên quan kéo theo sự bóc lột nhân công, thường là phụ nữ, trẻ em và dân nhập cư ở các công xưởng (điều này cũng được nhắc đến trong phim "The true cost", bộ phim tài liệu về sự sụp đổ của tòa nhà Rana Plaza giết chết hơn 1100 công nhân ngành may), mình cũng nhận thấy có những vấn đề không ổn trong ngành này ở Việt Nam, một trong những công xưởng gia công lớn của thế giới, bên cạnh Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka và gần đây là Guatemala và Campuchia. Mình nghĩ là vấn đề đạo đức không nằm ở sự phát triển của ngành thời trang, vì nó là điều tất yếu trong một thị trường có cầu. Mình cho rằng vấn đề cần nêu ra đích danh là việc các thương hiệu thời trang, những nhãn hàng dè sẻn chi tiêu và không quan tân đến người lao động, thế nhưng tác giả đã không đề cập nhiều.

CÂU CHUYỆN MUA SẮM VÀ TIÊU THỤ

Lẽ dĩ nhiên, con người đã bắt đầu thay đổi thói quen mua sắm khi xã hội phát triển và cuộc sống dư dả hơn. Từ chỗ mua những gì mình cần sang mua những gì mà chúng ta muốn (khuyến khích bạn xem bộ phim tài liệu "Kế hoạch đào thải non sản phẩm", bản quyền thuộc trung tâm nghiên cứu phát triển trường đại học Mở TP.HCM). Điều làm mình bất ngờ là lý-giải-chưa-từng-có của tác giả về việc phong trào nữ quyền cũng khuyến khích tiêu thụ!

Vì là "dẫn luận"- mà theo mình hiểu là một dạng sách tổng hợp thông tin và phân tích thông tin, nên sẽ chẳng có một bài học rõ ràng nào cho tất cả những ai dành thời gian đọc sách. Tác giả không khuyên chúng ta làm gì, không định hướng thị trường thời trang để chúng ta kinh doanh, cũng chẳng có âm điệu chỉ trích hay Pr một tên tuổi, một thương hiệu nào. Điều mà quyển sách này làm được, là đã cho mình một góc nhìn tổng quan và toàn cảnh những gì liên quan đến ngành.

Cuối cùng, mình muốn dành lời khen cho dịch giả Hải Ngọc. Bỏ qua phần đối chiếu với sách gốc, quyển sách được dịch rất mượt và dễ hiểu.

Bản dịch là Dẫn Luận Về Thời Trang.

Không biết mọi người thấy sao chứ cá nhân mình đánh giá bản dịch cuốn này của dịch giả Hải Ngọc dở kinh khủng. Khoan bàn đến nội dung nguyên bản của sách vì hình như bản dịch làm nội dung bớt hấp dẫn đi nhiều rồi. Cảm tưởng như người dịch không thật sự hiểu những gì tác giả đang viết nên câu cú dịch rất lủng củng, khó theo dõi, nhiều đoạn phải đọc đi đọc lại mới hiểu. Đặc biệt một cuốn sách về thời trang nhưng dịch giả lại viết sai tên nhà thiết kế/thương hiệu (VD: Jil Sander bị dịch giả viết nhầm thành Jill Sander ít nhất 2 lần) là điều không thể chấp nhận được chứ chưa nói đến những lỗi sai chính tả đơn thuần.

Về nội dung thì mình không chắc do bản gốc của tác giả hay do bản dịch mà mình cảm thấy bố cục và triển khai ý chưa được rõ, không phù hợp với tên sách “A Very Short Introduction” lắm. Thêm nữa là sách hơi ít hình minh họa nên để hiểu được hết nội dung thì người đọc phải tự tìm xem thêm trên mạng, còn nếu chỉ đọc nội dung chữ trong sách với 1-2 hình minh họa gọi là “cho có” thì mình không chắc là những người chưa biết gì (là những độc giả mục tiêu mà mình nghĩ bộ sách AVSI này muốn hướng tới) về thời trang có thể hiểu hết được những gì tác giả truyền tải trong cuốn này.

Rather than a chronological layout, Fashion: A Very Short Introduction focuses on one topic at a time, such as “Ethics,” “Industry,” and “Art.” While the chapters of this book were well thought out, I wasn’t particularly fond with how Rebecca would start in with a more modern highlight and then randomly jump back in time. I also don’t completely agree with her conclusion that fashion didn’t die, it merely evolved. Major, luxury fashion houses have only survived because of their sales of non-fashion products. What most people think of when they hear the term “fashion” only exists to drive sales for that brand in other departments, which to me signifies its death into being just clothes or art. If fashion is still alive it is with the small boutiques that not only truly care about providing affordable options to their clients, but also acknowledge that luxury items are no longer typically worn on an everyday basis for masses. Not everyone wants “fast fashion,” but even less consumers can afford “slow fashion.” I keep the majority of my clothes for 5-10 years before donating it or it is no longer wearable. I believe developing a firm middle ground is the real key to fashion evolving, not it being taken over by Eastern designers which Rebecca seems fairly certain of (unless, of course, they happen to offer this middle ground).

This book is a good introduction to fashion from Haute Coutures to the raise of mass-production ready made clothes. The book also to touched on ethics in fashion such as the excessive use of fur and severe work condition in factories in Bangladesh, India and Vietnam. Would love to learn more about new trends in fashion (e.g. luxury street) and the digital transformation of fashion retail.

A great little comprehensive introduction to fashion. This was a part of my coursework, very informative, and I liked how it linked into art and fashions throughout time as well as addressing different aspects of the fashion world both positive and negative.

خلاصه ای نسبتا خوب و نه چندان کامل درباره ی تمام اتفاقاتی که انتظار میره در مورد فشن بدونیم. به عنوان سر نخ برای مطالعه ی بیشتر پیشنهاد میشه.

It was a very good introduction to the world of fashion as industry. The author used plenty of historical facts to present the evolution of the fashion manufacture, usage and meaning in the world. The focus was mostly from the 17th century to our time, because the Industrial Revolution changed the way people were seeing and making clothes. Among others, one of the chapters discusses the connection between art and fashion, while another one considers the ethical issues that were born with the advent of this industry. The references and the suggested further readings seem like an excellent resource for future study.

Very good overview of the history of fashion, from early textile trade and tailoring to throwaway fashions of contemporary times and the reaction to it. it lead me to research a bunch of historical things I was unaware of like the macaroni movement in England.

This was just ok. The organization of the book was confusing. But, the suggested reading looks promising.
