Founded in 1928 in the heart of New England, Cedar Lake is rooted in a dark history that the citizens do not wish to speak about. Many are oblivious to the strange events surrounding them, the people who vanish without a trace and the bizarre occurrences that happen in the small town...
When Rebecca “Beck” Rollins arrives in Cedar Lake and befriends Jon Reynolds, she claims to be running from her past – a past that she desperately wishes to escape.
But, in reality, Beck is running toward something. She is here to discover the events of Cedar Lake that took place many years ago.
Will Beck ever find the truth about her own past... a past she can never run from?
Because once you arrive in Cedar Lake… you may never be allowed to leave!
Rebecca (Beck) flees from her past to the Cedar Lake community where she meets the mysterious Jon. But something strange, and possibly evil, may lurk at the lake and Beck may not be running away, but towards her fate.
Weird isn't the word for this disconcerting novella. Reading like a horror stream of consciousness, mixed with the literary equivalent of the claustrophobic found footage film, Beckoned is a spooky little read. Hang in there til the end, if you dare.
Anna Mathews and Eric Woods deliver a haunting novella in Beckoned. Sometimes the past is best left there, but Beck can't let that happen. These two weave a tale like nobody's business. I was enthralled the moment I started it. I'm looking forward to more intriguing tales from these two. It is definitely worth the read.
I had the honour to serve as a beta reader for Beckoned: A Cedar Lake Novella by Eric Woods and Anna Matthews...and, boy, was I impressed! The story is full of twists and turns, and I was compelled to keep reading to discover what would happen next.
The two authors write seamlessly together with one voice, weaving a tale about a woman, Rebecca “Beck” Rollins, who is trying to escape her past, but ends up in Cedar Lake...a place with a dark history, strange disappearances, and a connection to her life’s events that she’s unprepared to face. The characters are well developed and the plot is complex and intriguing.
This series is perfect for horror and thriller enthusiasts. I look forward to the next instalment to see how the rest of this story unfolds!
I’m still wrapping my head around what I just read. This novella packs quite a punch and has me reeling, yet I couldn’t put it down. Whatever is going on in Cedar Lake is definitely bigger and more complicated than the main character, Beck Rollins, can ever hope to understand. Is it the town itself - perhaps the lake, specifically - that serves as a vortex, catching up and destroying all who venture too close? Is it all simply a fever dream, perhaps schizophrenic ramblings, or is the paranormal truly at play here? And can you really trust your own senses?
This quick read starts in the middle of chaos, and doesn't let up! It's creepy, intense and will have you wondering "Wtf is going on" right along with our main character. Such a fun read and I look forward to reading more about Cedar Lake!
Writing this Novella was one of the most exciting times I’ve had as a writer. Getting to co-write with such a talented author was an honor, and we are so excited at how this story developed. There are so many thrills and scary moments, and the twists even surprised us! Of all the things I have written, my favorite scene is in this story. Beckoned is a quick, fun, chilling read, and I hope everyone who checks it out enjoys it! Welcome to Cedar Lake! Are you ready for Beck?
