I love books, so that makes Goodreads my favorite social media site. As a reader, I enjoy a variety of books. As a writer, I create historical novels with a wholesome mix of action, adventure, and romance. My stories have earned Whitney Awards, Foreword Indies Finalists positions, Readers’ Favorite Gold and Silver medals, a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice Selection, and a Praiseworthy Award.

I'm a wife and a mother of three, and I've called Washington State, Utah, and Alaska home. I'm usually reading a couple books at once and working on multiple writing projects too. Other than that, my life is pretty ordinary. I'm grateful for that. I'll let the characters in my books have all the adventures.

About My Goodreads Ratings:
I joined Goodreads as a reader first, but since I’m an author too, I’ve made some changes to how I rate books. For fiction, I'll give a book 5 stars if I enjoyed every page. Otherwise, I'll leave the rating blank. For nonfiction, 5 star books are ones I enjoyed enough that I’d like to read them again. They’re books I connected with and highly recommend to others. 4 star books are good books that I thought were worth reading once, and they’re also recommended.

When I heard the announcement that the author was writing this book, I may have squealed. These characters won a piece of my heart after I read Of Sword and Shadow and I was so very happy to know that there would be more to their lives and stories in this book. This is the second book but is written in a stand alone manner if you aren't able to read the first book. But I will tell you that both books are amazing and I do recommend reading the first book. But if you choose to just read this one, you'll be able to do so without feeling lost or confused.

Rasheed is one of those characters that you just are drawn to. You can't help but want the best for them. He is so good and caring. He's had some hard struggles and had to leave behind his family, with them believing and saying the worst of him, even though all of their beliefs are not true. I really loved the theme of family in this book as well as the first book. And sometimes it isn't the cookie cutter mould of family. I loved how the author portrayed family and the words she wrote about it. So, so beautiful!

Gillen, Eudocia and Rasheed are off on another adventure. Not necessarily one of their choosing but one to save their family. And let me tell you, it is an adventure full of unexpected surprises, danger, unraveling mysteries and corruption, finding more family and fighting for their hearts.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough while reading this book. A.L. Sowards brings aspects of this time in history to life and I loved learning what I did from this book. Her dedication to history and sharing that through her books is wonderful. (Read her WWII books as well...WOW!!!) The kidnapping, the sneaking into different locations, the dungeon, the sword fights, the traveling, the ships on water...all of it was so well written.

I will admit that I did shed several tears while reading. I was pulled in and connected with these characters, their plight, their friendships, their familial ties, their love and their dedication to doing what's right.

Content: I would say that this book is clean. There are some aspects of it that not all readers will want to or be able to read. There might be some triggers for some readers. This book does deal with battles, war, espionage, kidnappings, fights, sword fights and more. Some of the scenes, although not extremely graphic do show battles and injuries. The book does not have any sex scenes in it, nothing more than some kisses.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I’m posting this review on release day, and I'm so excited to share this book with readers!

This isn’t a straight-up sequel to Of Sword and Shadow, but it has many of the same characters. You can read it without reading the first book, but the plot of this one, though independent, builds on events from the first book. This one features Rasheed as the protagonist, a character who first appeared in Of Sword and Shadow, and takes place eleven years later.

I could have left Of Sword and Shadow as a single book. But I did an awful lot of research to only get one book out of the Medieval Duchy of Athens, and I really loved those characters, and there were several historical events to work with, so I wrote this one too. I hope you enjoy it! I had a lot of fun escaping the less-than-ideal reality of 2020 to work on this adventure novel with a side of romance.

Included: history, Christian characters, Turkish pirates, forbidden love, revenge, betrayal, and lots of sword fights.

As with all my books, more detailed content information is available on my website here: https://alsowards.com/books/content/

This story is filled with intrigue and sheer knuckle-biting suspense. For me, an added bonus was the author's attention to detail and medieval settings. A map of the Old World, a glossary, and historical details were provided to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of the political issues during this time. If you enjoy medieval stories filled with grit, loyalty, and intrigue with an added dash of romance, then this one is for you. The plot for Of Daggers and Deception is filled with unique twists and turns--a real page-turner.

Absolutely Satisfied. I was very excited for Amanda's latest book and it did not disappoint.

"I'm not sure I can trust my heart. It was an undisciplined solider that refused to obey orders and had failed to learn from the past."

Do you like historical settings? Strong heroes who know their way on a battlefield? Forbidden Romances? Pirates? What about adventure?

A.L. Sowards does it again. Of Daggers and Deception begins where Of Sword and Shadow left off. Rasheed and his friends after a hard fought victory have settled in Thebes and run a bath house, living the quiet life, but never leaving behind the scars they gained in battle to earn this peace. When one of his friends is abducted, Rasheed has no choice but to jump back into the life he once knew as a solider and a mercenary but a pretty face might make his journey all the more complicated.

What I love about Sowards work is that she doesn't scrimp on her research. This series is packed full of political intrigue and history between warring nations. She plants her characters in the midst of chaos and lets you cheer them on as they overcome obstacle after obstacle. This second installment is jam packed full of life or death high stakes, battle scenes and a romance between two people who are fighting their feelings amidst it all.

The politics and romance are evenly placed, and don't outshine the other. It does take some brain power to get the politics right but I always love to learn about history while i'm reading fiction. And I really adored this romance, it was a great pairing of two strong willed individuals who complimented each other very nicely.

There is a powerful theme of Christianity without at all being preachy. It is about God's hand in our lives and having the faith to go where he would have us go. "Living a life of faith doesn't mean everything will be easy. It just means you have better perspective when the hard things come".

Rasheed is the kinda man you want to bring home to meet your momma. Strong, God loving, persevering, loyal and one you'd like to have your back in battle.

As much as I liked the first book in the series, I think I liked this one even more.

This is Rasheed's story, told in his POV, who's a friend to Gillen and Eudocia from book one. It's been a few years since and they've made a good life for themselves as owners of a bathhouse. But their past brings them problems and soon they're involved in a fight for their lives.

What a fascinating historic time period! I appreciate how well written and research this story is.
There's adventure, action, treason, combat, friendship, and romance. I had a hard time putting it down.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I just went on the best adventure! I loved the pacing of this story, I loved the characters and I loved the storyline.

We know Gil, Eudocia and Rasheed, as well as some secondary characters, from the first book in this series. (which I also loved) Rasheed is the star of this show but I love that the other characters don't go away. They are very much a part of this whole story. It creates a feeling of family and purpose. The connections between these main characters are deep and unshakable. It feels really good as a reader.

There is mystery and intrigue, deceit and danger. I was fully invested in all ways the whole way through. Ugh, so invested. As the danger and intensity ramped up, so did my reading speed. I had to purposely slow down my reading and my heart. I love when that happens.

The author did some setting up at the end of her book for another, at least I hope she did! It makes me VERY excited!! This author is one of my favorites. I love her writing and I especially love her writing in this genre and time period. There aren't a lot of others doing it right now and it's filling a void for me.

Content: violence, some described. Peril. Kissing.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Daggers of deception was a high adventure Christian historical fiction. There were Muslims, spies, sword fights, slave ships and lots of battles.
But even more than that there was a more personal thing going on. People finding there way through spiritual true. Understanding of what Gods way looks like through prayer and forgiveness. Living out faith in such a way that you can become more of a community (family) the way God longs for us to be.
Although it’s was light on romance I recommend this novel if you like a good adventure story. This was my first book by the author and I loved the writing.

Of Daggers and Deception brilliantly transports the reader to late 14th century Greece where battles, intrigue, and romance capture the imagination. While I didn’t have the opportunity to read the previous book in the series Of Sword and Shadow, it didn’t stop me from really enjoying this book and wanting to immediately pick up the first. It definitely has something for everyone whether you like action, adventure, intrigue, or romance, this has it all.

The story begins in a bathhouse in Thebes where Rasheed and his friends Eudocia and Gil hope to eek out a profitable, quiet existence. However, the quiet doesn’t last long and they’re soon thrown into political intrigue, warfare, and deception. Rasheed’s long lost brother finds him which leads to some touching moments where the two carefully build a relationship sharing their differing faiths and earning each other’s trust.

When Rasheed meets the beautiful, intelligent Cecilia, it’s hard to know whether he can trust her. Literally forced to be together, a strong attraction grows between them. However, not all is as it seems and I honestly didn’t know until the last chapter what would happen.

Uniquely told from Rasheed’s perspective, I was immediately drawn in by his first person narration. He’s such a valiant, faithful character and I was charmed by his humor, his inner struggles, and his love for his friends/family and Cecilia. I also loved his wisdom and strength in character. One of my favorite quotes was “Living a life of faith doesn’t mean everything will be easy. It just means you have better perspective when the hard things come.”

Because I didn’t read the first book, it took a few chapters to really understand the plot, culture, and history. Thankfully, the author includes a fantastic reference guide to help the reader quickly familiarize themselves with 14th century Greece. I absolutely loved learning about this time period and fabulous location.

This definitely stands out as a truly memorable book. Whether you love romance, history, or action/adventure, I highly recommend this book!

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for advanced copies of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

Content: clean romance, some violence though not overly graphic, fighting scenes and battles, miscarriage.

This is another story about the Medieval Duchy of Athens. We're back in Thebes about a decade after Of Sword and Shadow takes place, and although it's about Rasheed we still get to see a lot of Gil and Eudocia in this adventurous tale. Rasheed, Gil and Eudocia have left behind their mercenary activities to lead quiet lives as owners of a bathhouse, until they're drawn into a scheme of political intrigue when Eudocia is kidnapped. Rasheed is forced to be with the beautiful Venetian Cecilia when he escapes to help find Eudocia, but can she be trusted?

We learn so much about Rasheed--his upbringing, why he's alone and not with his family, and why he hasn't married. I found it to be a really sad story, but it explains why Gil, Eudocia and Rasheed are so close--they're his chosen family. If you've ever lived far away from family or are not close to relatives for whatever reason, but have friends that are your chosen family, then you can better understand Rasheed's relationship with his close friends.

Rasheed is a wonderful character. He's kind and gentle, but is force to be reckoned with when the situation requires it. I liked that he was a man of great faith. This book kept me turning pages to see what would happen. I needed to know if Eudocia would be rescued, if Cecilia could be trusted, and much more. A.L. Sowards has written yet another wonderful historical that will whisk you away to a different land and time far away from the present.

I read Of Sword and Shadow last year by A L Sowards and I LOVED it! It made me so happy to see that she had written a sequel. And it was so good!

I loved that the characters I had loved from Of Sword and Shadow were all back. Rasheed works with Gil and Eudocia at a bath house. I loved how these three had become family. They were there for each other during their darkest times and they continued to be there for each other in their best times.

Rasheed is such a great person. There were many chances for him to forgive in this book. And he forgave as often as he felt like he should. And seeing the way he treated Cecilia, and pretty much everyone around him, showed just the kind of person he is. His were excellent eyes to see the plot through.

There is so much to the plot of this one. So many dangers around every corner. The author kept the reader wanting to see more. I loved everything about this book!

I was sent an e-copy of Of Daggers and Deception as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

A. L. Sowards has a gift at bringing characters and historical periods to life.

I loved the first book in this series, Of Sword and Shadow. This book features one of the characters that I loved in the first book. Rasheed is a formidable soldier who has ended his time as a mercenary soldier. He has a place to call home and friends that he can count on.

Everything changes when strangers come to the bathhouse inquiring about their services. Everything changes when his friends are attacked and one taken hostage. It becomes a personal issue when they join forces with a group they do not trust.

I was very excited to revisit the characters in this series. A. L. Sowards wrote them in a compelling way that I wanted to find out what happened to them. This story carries the element of mystery, suspense, and romance that I have come to love in her books.

If you love stories that are intriguing, are historical fiction, and have great characters. You should pick it up. You can read this as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading them in order. You will be glad that you did.

I was a fan of Swords and Shadows, but think I liked this book even more! This book is full of adventure, danger with a side of romance. I love a book that can immerse me in the time period, and I love it even more when it’s a new-to-me setting! Thebes was quite the place to start out this magnificent story and I felt like I was there. I loved the redemptive qualities that are discussed throughout, and thought it added such an incredible tone to the story. There is mention of violence in this book as it takes place in a war filled time and appreciated the content warning to let me know about it going in. I am pretty squeamish with violence and felt ready to take this book on and would recommend for mature middle graders and up. Last, but not least, this has one of my favorite epilogues I’ve read!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I can't tell you how excited I was to read this book... but still, I was a little wary--only because I NEVER read solely male perspective books.

But let me tell you... I had NO reason to worry! A.L. Sowards weaves a historically rich novel with fantastic pacing and not a detail overlooked. Her ability to bring history to life and to create characters that feel so real they may truly have existed is singular. Fans of historical fiction will devour this unique and captivating story—it is not to be missed!

Of Daggers and Deception is the second book in a series following Of Sword and Shadow by A.L. Sowards. I loved the first book and I loved this second book just as much.

I enjoy romance books, but I also love to mix it up, and this book does just that. It is full of action, warfare, strategy, deception, and of course there’s some love in there too. I’ve always found the Mediterranean area and culture fascinating, and this book includes so much interesting history.

While there’s a lot of action and fighting in this book, the characters themselves soften the feeling of the book and make it a page turner. The romance between Rasheed end Cecelia is a full of surprises and circumstances that are far from predictable.

I loved Rasheed’s loyalty, fearlessness, faith and how he treated his brother and friends. I loved moments he shared his thoughts about God with his brother, who didn’t understand his conversation to Christianity.

Cecilia is a very interesting character as more and more of her past and her role in political affairs becomes more clear. I can’t help but like her and cheer for her, while at the same time being a little weary about trusting her with Rasheed’s heart.

The growth of Rasheed’s relationship with Cecilia was so fun to read about. Their forced proximity situation was unique and kind of funny at times.

I highly recommend this book if you like a good historical fiction adventure!

Do you love adventure, mystery, intrigue, and spies? This is the book for you. There were even elements of family, forgiveness, and a little romance for good measure..

Rasheed is a man without a country and the story comes from his perspective. He remains with Gil and Eudocia and runs a bath house, when a run in with Venetians and others changes their trajectory and forces them to try and rescue Eudocia from parties unknown.

What ensues is a high adventure fraught with danger as well as a story of faith and forgiveness.. Rasheed and his friends find themselves tentative allies with a group that they are unsure they can trust.

This tale was full of twists and turns and I felt that I was in the ride too, with less danger than the characters. There was a realism in this story that comes from a true understanding of people and of history. I would highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction where the history is well researched and even if an event didn't happen, you are left feeling it could have happened that way.

I feel blessed to have received an early copy and am happy to my thoughts in review.

Whoa! What an epic tale of adventure and romance! I loved Of Sword and Shadow, the first book in this series, and this one was just as fantastic.

This is told from the POV of Rasheed, a friend of Gill and Eudocia from the first book. He is a warrior who enjoys peace but when his loved ones are threatened, he risks everything to save them. I loved the new character Cecilia and their forced proximity romance. Lots of plot twists and reveals along the way and the epilogue was amazing.

If you enjoy books full of epic adventure, strong friendships, nonstop action, turn the page suspense, and a thread of romance, this book is for you! I was completely engrossed in the story and the pages literally turned themselves. Highly, highly recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

This is the second book in this medieval romance series. And wow! It’s intense. It begins 11 years after the ending of the last book (Of Sword and Shadows). This is Rasheed’s story. He was Gillen’s Moorish friend from the last book, a Muslim convert to Christianity. His long-lost brother appears, and we see Gillen and Eudocia a lot, as Eudocia is kidnapped by a mysterious enemy. Gillen, Rasheed, his brother, and some Venetians they get tangled up with, take off to rescue her. Cecilia is a beautiful Venetian that Rasheed is drawn to, but her betrothed has been kidnapped as well with Eudocia, so again, his love is in vain and he tries to ignore his infatuation with her. But when Turkish pirates enter the picture, everything goes haywire. More people are killed, more people are taken prisoner, more people fight and flee for their lives. In a word—intense!

I won’t give you the details and ruin your fun in reading it for yourself. Just know, although this book was long, I read it in two days. I could not put it down once I started because I was thoroughly captivated and had to know what would happen next. And a LOT happens. Wow! There is so much political intrigue, espionage, betrayal, heartache, growing friendships, death, crazy plot twists and more to keep you from all the chores you probably need to get done. So beware. This book will seriously kidnap you from life and not let you go until you read The End. That is not an exaggeration. But I highly recommend letting yourself get kidnapped. Stockholm Syndrome with this book is real. You will grow to love your captor. You will learn more about the area of Greece during the 14th century and all the crazy political maneuverings going on in all those little areas from all the different cultures and religions that vied for power in that region. So grab this book, bind yourself to the couch, and enjoy being a prisoner.

An epic medieval adventure with a sprinkle of romance.

The medieval times are fascinating to me, and although I wouldn't want to live back then, I really enjoyed this tale that was very well-written and paced perfectly. Sowards does a great job of bringing history to life and immersing the reader in a dashing and dangerous story. Although this story can stand alone, it is all the better if Of Sword and Shadow is read first.

Rasheed, Gillen, and Eudocia are on yet another adventure, and not necessarily an adventure they would choose, but one they are compelled to embark on. I love the way Sowards captures the loyalties and familial bonds so well. While incorporating elements of mystery, sword fights, kidnappings, twists and turns, and more, these characters stay so strong and are so likable.

The adventure was riveting and the story line solid and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is a series I would highly recommend for those who love a good religious, historical adventure.

Content: kisses; mild-moderate violence (not super graphic death/injuries due to war, kidnappings, fights, etc); moderate religious elements

Of Daggers and Deception by A. L. Sowards continues the story of Rasheed, Gil, and Eudocia that began approximately eleven years earlier in Of Sword and Shadow. I recommend reading these novels in order. Although Of Daggers and Deception gives backstory, reading them sequentially establishes the characters and vividly depicts their prior actions.

Rasheed serves as the narrator in Of Daggers and Deception and the story hooked my attention early on. I stayed engaged as the plot clipped along brimming with danger, suspense, and mystery. Although Rasheed seemed super-human in some of the battles, he made an admirable male lead for other reasons: his wisdom, the way he valued contributions by women, his pursuit and protection of Cecilia, his bravery, and his devotion to the Lord.

Of Daggers and Deception by A. L. Sowards felt balanced – not too heavy, not too light. A recurring theme of God as a loving God rather than a dictator doling out commands and consequences added spiritual depth to the novel that I appreciated. At times, I found it challenging to keep all the warring factions and their motives straight, but the story earned four stars from me and has a permanent home on my bookshelf beside Of Sword and Shadow.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

Rasheed’s story was phenomenal. Sowards crafts a world full of family and the fight for freedom that the reader is transported to. I felt the physical and emotional love and pain alongside Rasheed. I felt his joy, his hurt, his love, his faith, and his desire to do the right things. It was like I was experiencing everything with him through the entire story. I was rooting for his success in every venture he sought out! Rasheed is one of those characters that feels like a real person. I felt like I knew him personally by the time the book was done. Sowards is gifted when she puts pen to paper that takes you into the medieval times and the ruthlessness that abounded there. If you are a fan of suspense, romance, and faith, then this is an absolute must read! I am still reflecting on the story days later. This one will stay with you. I liked this book very mich. It represented a lot of what I like in good historical fiction: lots of credible detail and colourful characters. It also focuses on a very unusual setting and historical events which few will be familiar with.
That setting in 14th century Greece, a relgion divided into small city states which were fought over by the rich and powerful of Europe. Venetians and Catalans, Spanish and Italians, as well as Turks all vye for power and control of territory or economic resources.

In the midst of all this, our heroes, Gillen from the last novel and his Moorish friend Rasheed struggle to find a kidnapped Eudosia, and Rashed struggles with his feelings for a Venetian woman. Rasheed was a fascinating character, a moorish convery to Christianity who was abandoned by his family and always had a strained relationship with his father. When his long-lost brother comes back on the scene, gaurding his heart and keeping those he loves safe gets harder.

My only issues with this story were the pacing. It was inconsistent, sometimes plodding sometimes rushing. There were times I got completely lost, when something would happen to one character in one place, but then only a sentence later another character was dying when I don't even remember him being in it. Or who they were.

That and a few modern Americanisms were the only things which really stood out with this story.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for approving my request for an ARC of this title. I was not required to write a positive reivew an all opinions expressed are my own.

Dear Mrs. Sowards,
This book is so fantastic! Rasheed is now of my favorite male book heroes. A man who is humble, wicked strong, can fight off pirates and assassins and traitors, be patient with a rude, petulant brother, kind to friends who are suffering, romantic, AND uses good body hygiene? Is there even any contest?? No. The answer is no. Rasheed is the best.
I experienced a lot of pendulum swinging emotion regarding Cecilia. I vacillated between liking her, not so sure I liked her, liking her, hating her, being shocked, and back to liking her again. Wow!
Your story kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. I could not have predicted how anything would have gone. Not once! There were so many twists and turns, so many great swashbuckling and sword fighting and captivating moments, I had to force myself to put the book down whenever life came calling. (“What? I have to pick up my children from school or fix dinner? What an incredibly frustrating prospect! I need to know how Rasheed will get out of this latest mess!”)
I was so pleased that you ensured Gil and Eudocia had important roles to play in Rasheed’s story. I came to adore both of them in Of Sword and Shadow and I loved seeing them together in other ways in this book.
I loved the unique element of having a book written entirely from a male’s perspective. I don’t feel like that’s very common and it provided for a really interesting narrative. And the romance is just so sweet. It felt believable, as though a man really had written those words.
I also loved how much history you were able to fit into this book without making me feel as though I were being pummeled by historical facts. I came away having learned new things and researching even more.
You’ve written another hole-in-one, hit-it-out-of-the-park, knockout, incredible book, and you’ve earned a life-long fan and supporter in me. I’ll sing your praises and tell everyone to read your books. You deserve it with that masterpiece.
Until your next book,
Jessica
P.S. Your epilogue was the cutest of all epilogues! When I finished I found myself grinning like a big buffoon and not the least bit embarrassed about it. *le sigh* So cute.

*Note: contains mild violence, including mentions of blood and killing in hand-to-hand combat; this is a Christian fiction story, with some indications of religious prejudices;

**Many thanks to the publisher and author for the advance copy, which I was offered with option to review. These are my very own thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoy history. I always have. I married a history teacher to boot. But neither my husband or I have the skill to find such amazing details and stories in history like A.L Sowards. She had a knack for being able to blend history and make it livable, relatable, and interesting to learn.

Rasheed was a great character in the first book of the Duchy series, but it was so good to hear more about his back story and the deep love he has for people. He is loyal to those he loves and cares about. He has not had an easy life, but he still has the ability to see the good amongst it. Cecilia is a Venetian and meeting her ignites a spark in him that he keeps trying to say no to. But they both feel it and feel a pull to one another that should not be happening when she is betrothed to someone else.

When the are forced into situations that make them work together, the current between them grows and they can no longer ignore it. Yet, Cecilia feels a duty to her family and country. Rasheed feels a duty to ones heart and to find true happiness. Through many adventures in a time of Greece that was constantly being ruled under different hands, the two of them have to overcome abductions, pirates, spies, war, and revenge. Can Rasheed trust Cecilia when it matters most, and can she put trust in her own ability to make choices for her own happiness?

I really enjoyed the brotherhood that is found in this book. The bond between Gil, Rasheed, his brother, and Eudocia is a special thing to read about and be absorbed in. I loved the theme that you have the ability to choose your family, apart from those you are blood related too.

You can't always escape your past, and the main character Rasheed knows this better than anyone. Eleven years after the story told in Sword and Shadow, the novel starts with Rasheed, Gil, and his wife Eudocia living a quiet but busy life running a bathhouse. A quiet life that is, until Venetian strangers try to hire Rasheed and Gil for a job. After their refusal, Eudocia's kidnapping, then the action begins. There is so much action and suspense that there are only a few moments where readers can catch their breath. Sowards knows how to write colorful characters and bring to life an exciting story through her words.

This time period of Greece in 1309 is so fascinating to me. It's not one that I've read a lot about. Sowards's fabulous research opens up this whole new/old world to her readers. The facts about the time period never boggle down the pace. The plot is detailed, a little romance, warfare, political maneuvering, spies, betrayal, and also forgiveness. I loved Rasheed's journey of finding love, and fulfillment in his life. Cecilia was also another great character, and I enjoyed Rasheed and Cecilia's moments together.

This second novel in the series could be read as a stand-alone, but as I always state, reading the first will give you a wonderful background on these characters. It was so nice to pick up this second book and be swept away back into ancient Greece and the lives of Rasheed, Gil, and Eudocia. This novel would make a great gift for those who like action books, a plot full of twists and turns, and strong, likable characters. This is 100% another winning novel by A.L. Sowards.

With vivid descriptions, Ms. Sowards makes this tale set in the 1300’s in Europe come alive. I love historical fiction, but know little about this time period. After reading this book, I feel like I have gained more knowledge and experienced what it would have been like to have lived then. The well-written plot transported me to a war torn era with danger and suspicion around every corner.

Many years ago, Rasheed risked and lost everything he had in order to honor and protect a young lady’s reputation. His actions changed the course of his life and proved that he was an honorable man. I enjoyed seeing Rasheed learn to trust and deepen his relationships with family and friends, both old and new.

Political conflicts, uncertainty, mystery, and love were all there in this book. If you enjoy Middle Ages stories, you will enjoy reading this second book of the Duchy of Athens series. You can read it as a standalone book if you so desire.

I was given this book to review by NetGalley, the publisher, and author. I was not required to write a positive review, all opinions are my own.

I am very thankful to have been able to read an advance copy of the book Of Daggers And Deception by A.L. Sowards courtesy of #NetGalley and #CovenantCommunications. All opinions expressed are mine and mine alone.

This book is number 2 in the series centred on the Duchy of Athens. I loved the first book Of Sword And Shadow and found this one to be equally mesmerizing. When I started reading, I immediately felt I was coming home to characters that I knew and liked. In the first book, we heard the voice of then slave girl Eudocia and discovered how she met her future husband Gil and became involved in helping him and his companions (including one Rasheed Ibn Musa) to help wrestle control from some ruthless leaders and fight for a better future. In this novel, some years have passed and Rasheed, Eudocia and Gil are co-owners of a bath house in Thebes and are trying to live a peaceful life. Rasheed is the one whose voice the reader will hear and we learn more of his past, how he was rejected by his fundamentalist Muslim family over a simple kiss given to a woman being forced into an arranged marriage. We learn of his conversion from being a Muslim to a Christian. In Thebes he has found a new family with Eudocia and Gil and although he has yet to marry, he is happy and settled.

Life does not stay static though and his bad day begins with a rowdy customer at the bath house who treats Eudocia with disrespect leading to a rapid ejection from the premises. Then a strange girl named Cecilia comes in, who speaks as someone from Venice. She is joined by two men who seem to know way too much about the background history of the three co-owners, history that they have tried to keep quiet in case of retaliation for past events. These men want the threesome to come and work for them but the friends have no interest and only concerns about this sudden request. Gil & Eudocia head out after these three to see if they can find out more about them leaving Rasheed to man the bath house and receive a surprise visit from his uncle Sebastie who brings sad news and a rather judgemental brother that Rasheed has not seen in years and years.
Rasheed takes his brother home with him but before the night is through he learns that Gil may be dead and that Eudocia and one of the men they were following appear to have been abducted. Gil is badly beaten but survives and thus begins a whole new set of adventures as Rasheed, his brother Aben, Gil and Sebastie set out with the remaining Venetians in search of Eudocia and Cecilia’s betrothed. From this point on the action rarely slows down as the search is on. Cecilia turns out to be very accustomed to sailing, having done so for years on her father’s ship before his death. Her uncle is now her guardian and appears to have little respect for her knowledge or capabilities, but Rasheed is quickly drawn to her and when Turkish pirates abduct her, he rides off after her in a flash. After an incredible escape, they spend several days chained together as they make their way back to the ship belonging to her uncle.

I really had trouble putting the book down even to sleep. It was heartwarming to see Rasheed and his brother get to know each other and learn to understand each other better. Rasheed’s affection for Cecilia has not gone un-noticed by her uncle and ultimately leads to a harsh betrayal and death of someone very dear to Rasheed.

If you like action – you will find it in this book. If you like sword fights, yup you’ll find them here. Encounters with pirates? Several! If you like stories where friendship means everything, and faith is something lived rather than preached this will be a good book for you. If you like a clean romance, that too is here. I was not familiar with the time period, or area before reading the first book in the series and that whetted my interest for more, but this book can definitely stand alone, and the author gives a very handy glossary and historical background right at the beginning of the book along with a map to set the reader up with a good basic understanding of the words that will be encountered while reading. The cover artwork is very appealing and I finished the book wanting to read more though the storyline was nicely tidied up. Sowards writing is always well researched and enjoyable and I would certainly recommend this book to others who enjoy historical fiction. I look forward to reading more of her work.

“Some family you’re born with. … Some family you collect along the way.”

“Living a life of faith doesn’t mean everything will be easy. It just means you have better perspective when the hard things come.”

Rasheed, Gil, and Eudocia have been living a quiet life running their bathhouse for the last eleven years. That quiet life is threatened when a group of Venetians comes in asking questions about the small group of people who took the city eleven years ago. Rasheed, Gil, and Eudocia are content with the lives they have built and don’t want to admit to anything…until they are forced into it when the bathhouse is attacked and hostages are taken.

I loved this! Of Daggers and Deception is full of suspense, mystery, friendship, and romance, and it is so good! I haven’t read many books that take place in medieval times, and I’m glad I took a chance on this one as well as Amanda’s previous book, Of Sword and Shadow. If the time period is the only thing stopping you from picking these up, I encourage you not to let it and get them both!

Of Daggers and Deception is the follow-up novel to Of Sword and Shadow, but I think you could read them as standalone novels and not feel like you were missing anything. But they are both so good, so you should probably just get both! 😁😉

Content note: violence (sword fighting and battles, wounds, etc are mentioned, but not described in gory detail)

I received a complementary copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Of Daggers and Deception" is a romance and adventure set in 1390 in Greece. It's the second book in the series, but it works as a stand alone. The characters were well-developed, complex, interesting, and I cared about what happened to them. The historical details were woven into the story, creating a distinct sense of time and place. While based on true events, many details of specific battles are unknown and the author filled this in with events involving our fictional heroes. The adventure involved many suspenseful battle and escape scenes.

Rasheed admired Cecilia's intelligence, resourcefulness, and beauty, but she's already betrothed. Cecilia wanted to be valued for herself, not just as a pawn in a political marriage, so she's tempted by the respect and care shown by Rasheed. Then he learned about her talent that made her a valuable resource that her family wasn't about to let go of even for a love match. Both believed that God had a plan and purpose for their lives even when it wasn't clear to them. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting, enjoyable novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
