DeVante's Coven

*This edition is out of print*

When Roderick abandons new vampire Daniel to the care of his sire, DeVante, Daniel flounders under DeVante's attitude of benevolent neglect, and wonders how much autonomy DeVante will actually allow. Yearning for guidance and supervision, Daniel pursues Reed, a mortal man, and finds himself ensnared in a relationship rich with elements of BDSM.

Meanwhile, Roderick has fled to Las Vegas, where he saves the life of a young man named Tony by changing him to vampire. But when Tony wakes up, he doesn't act like a fledgling vampire should. And when the sun rises and Roderick sleeps his vampire sleep, Tony walks out into the daylight and goes home, where he accidentally changes his roommate Lily to vampire. Roderick wakes to find that he now has two brand new fledglings, neither of whom he can control. He panics and does the only thing can think to do; bring them to DeVante in San Francisco.

Vampires, mortals, and Tony, (who's something else altogether), are all beholden to DeVante for protection, though each has a special talent. DeVante begins to suspect that an outside force has brought all these children to him for some nefarious purpose, but before he can put the pieces together, the whole group is snatched and held for ransom. Can the members of DeVante's little coven can combine their talents to save themselves, in spite of their differences? And if they can, is that the definition of family?

SM Johnson hibernates in a conservative community of northern Wisconsin, where she writes characters who aren't exactly mainstream. Her stories are erotic, romantic and often somewhat unexpected. PS - Goodreads insists on periods between the S and the M of SM Johnson. But, for the record, the periods are incorrect. And because of this, also for the record, some of my books DO NOT SHOW UP as my books, but as other S.M. Johnson's books.

SM Johnson greatly redeems herself in this, the second book of her DeVante trilogy. It is so much better in all ways than the first book DeVante’s Children. After reading DeVante’s Coven, I am grateful to SM Johnson that DeVante is no longer stored away in a floppy drive, but is in print to be shared and enjoyed. Thank you.
SM Johnson’s talents for telling a love story with hot sex is incredible as Daniel, the half-human half-vampire, is given the freedom to find his own way. He does just that in a house of humans/clubbers/teens that he can sip from without them knowing. However, Daniel will be forced to come to terms with not feeling any remorse for killing, something he never resolved in DeVante’s Children, as his new lover, a human who is more than ordinary
Ultimately, SM Johnson masterfully brings it all together in one of the best endings so far, (I loved it better than the ending in DeVante’s Children), as DeVante’s children of extraordinary vampires stand together against an enemy as quick, dangerous, and deadly as Katarina. DeVante’s Coven will learn for themselves the answer to the question about love posed in the previous book, is an immortal life of love however long or short more valued than an immortal life of power and control, be it over a person, a fledgling, or over a domain? As each has their experience in abuse, sex, and rape, and not just rape sexually, but a rape of their soul, it will be through one another’s support that they will heal or that they will die.

Book 2 in SM Johnson's DeVante series was as fascinating, sexy and action-packed as book one. This book starts off with Daniel living as DeVante's ward in the Bay Area of California. Daniel has his own place and is starting to explore his newly developing sexuality in San Francisco when he quickly meets Reed, an older gay man who tries at first to scare Daniel out of what he perceives as his reckless behavior. Reed soon finds he can't stay away from the fascinating boy though, who is both too young for him and too old at the same time. Meanwhile, Roderick has gone wandering, as per his usual inability to stay long in one place, much less under DeVante's control, and in his travels crosses paths with Tony, the young street hustler from book 1, after he has been nearly killed by one of his tricks. Everything starts to get really interesting once Roderick tries to help Tony, and meanwhile Daniel starts to get more and more involved with Reed, even as DeVante tries to keep all of his "children" out of harm and under control. A very fun book that opens up a lot more possibilities in the series as the different abilities of the members of DeVantes growing coven begin to display and understand their gifts. As with book 1, I was left wanting more and highly recommend as a fun, erotic and original addition to the vampire genre.
