Eidetica

Rate this book
In the distant future, the world is no longer habitable. Humanity is forced to live in a city of towering Spires where the air is artificially-produced, food is grown in greenhouses, and companies compete to blanket a dreary existence with projections of neon lights and mockeries of Old World cities we once lived. Cybernetic implants further mask depreciating quality-of-life with digital interfaces and distractions to combat lives of crime and loss of purpose. When a series of disappearances throughout the city is linked to a prevalent line of implants called Eloise IV, forensic psychologist Kat Holinger is brought onboard to find the connection. Using a mysterious device called Eidetica to burrow into the archived memories of each implant’s abducted user, Kat and its creator Quentin Rhodes are launched into peculiarities of the human mind. Forced to reckon with revelations neither are prepared to face, the duo soon realize that playing God not only comes with devastating personal consequences—it could determine the ultimate fate of a city just struggling to survive each nightfall in a single piece. From the author of The Book of Death series comes a science-fiction epic set in the age of Earth’s great reckoning, combining a post-apocalyptic world with surreal landscapes of the human consciousness. The world we know died. All that's left of humanity escape toxic Earth by living inside closed cities, the barren environment rendered acceptable by projection of images.

When people disappear, somehow connected to the cerebral implant programme Eloise, forensic psychologist Dr Kat Holinger works alongside a police partner, who once saved her life, to track the criminal. But the illusion of life and justice may be equally fake inside the mind's eye.

Gagnier's tech heavy, yet highly philosophical sci fi, is adult in that the concept is not necessarily an easy read. Concentration, however, is rewarded with thrilling adventure, depth of emotion, a sense of hopeless loss and pervading mourning at the passing of what it means to be human, all topped off with an extraordinarily poignant ending.

As humanity careers towards disaster, Eidetica manages to sound both environmental and technolgical warnings to a deaf world.

The Matrix meets The Truman Show meets AI. Could easily have been left as a standalone novel, but Nicholas Gagnier does like a trilogy… so I’m intrigued as to where this will go next with ‘Rebellion’. As always a unique style of storytelling, and while heavy and wordy at times, it always draws the reader in. Support independent writing, take a sidestep from the mainstream, and appreciate there is more to enjoy and relish than just the Times Bestsellers.

Wow. Now this is one to get your teeth into! A really ‘full’ scifi novel with an interesting take on AI and a mystery to boot. If you enjoy your stories tech heavy and your AIs complex then this is your next read.
