A Love Beyond the Fields of Memory: A Historical Western Romance Novel

Rate this book
He saved her from a cruel fate by risking his life. Will she save him from the clutches of loneliness by risking her heart?

They say some things linger beyond the fields of memory, and that one can never truly forget how to love another. After being kidnapped, young Sally suffers a blow to the head and forgets vital information about herself. All seems lost when a strange man comes to her rescue, risking his life to save her from the cruel men who had sinister intentions. Bewildered, Sally finds herself recovering at the house of an ex-Sheriff named Cash Monhan, who is, one could argue, her guardian angel.

Yet, try as she might, Sally cannot easily recall many things from her life. Little by little, however, armed with Cash’s help, she remembers her bedridden father, her deteriorating house, and her lonesome life. As love springs in her heart, Sally finds herself having to choose between staying with the man who has saved her or returning to her home and her father…

The choice becomes even harder however when the two discover that Sally’s abduction was not a random occurrence, but an orchestrated scheme by a man close to her. Danger lurks in every corner and now Cash must try his best to protect Sally from an enemy who will stop at nothing to eliminate her…

Sally is so angsty she wore on my nerves and became quite tiresome-and that angsty manner is SUCH a large part of this book- pages and pages of her dithering, and sniveling. For example, twice we had to go through "oh, I don't know what to say or how to say it (at length!) about a letter she had already decided to share with others- fine- you don't know what to say? Just hand them the dratted letter and be done with it! And seriously, do you think your moping around not talking to anyone for days is easier on people who care about you than if you just go ahead and tell them you have had bad news? He is not stupid- she sends signals that would throw anyone off. Yes, she has brief moments of sucking it up and dealing, but they are very brief, few, and far between.
There are also a fair number of errors, which are more bothersome when the story is barely carrying one along anyway, and I was astonished to find the author had actually lived in WY- judging from the writing I thought maybe she had grown up in a town in the UK or some such. The story sounds like it is a contemporary but dates of 1847 are slapped on the chapters, although aside from people on horseback and no cars, hones or TVs mentioned, you would think they were living and doing things in daily life just as they would today, not back in 1897, working a ranch, and some of the words and phrases used just added to that feeling- they don't fit the time period.
Also, a number of things are not wrapped up the end- not cliffhangers, but questions- did her new husband really just go ahead and walk off from his own ranch, leaving it to what? What happened to Helena who had supposedly meant so much to both of them? I did go ahead and push on to the end of the book, and tried open the extended epilogue to see if these questions were answered, but apparently there is not one- at least the page does not exist according to the browser, and it is not mentioned on the author's website, so don't bother looking for it to tie up loose strings in the story.

A well written story with a very good storyline, the story flowed smoothly across the pages. Sally Dedmore and Cash Monhan meet in a very different way, their story has suspense, drama, danger, kidnapping, murder, twists, turns,a villain closer than Sally knows, and love. They are joined by Cash's best friend Sheriff of Weldstone, Idaho Turner Cartwright. I would recommend.

Love by the apple tree

A bittersweet story of loves lost, memories lost, betrayal and terrible crimes. But there is also help given, new love found, and justice served.
