Managing Family Meltdown: The Low Arousal Approach and Autism

Rate this book
Children and adults on the autism spectrum may often behave in ways that cause difficulties for themselves and those who care for them. This book offers effective, long-term strategies to help resolve common challenging behaviours such as physical aggression and self-injury. Managing Family Meltdown provides possible explanations for these behaviours, and offers a wealth of practical tips on how families can tackle different kinds of challenging behaviour. The authors explore the difference between managing and changing behaviour; how our own behaviour can influence the situation; and the principles of Low Arousal and its application in a family situation. Tried-and-tested ideas for intervention are provided and illustrated by case examples, and the pros and cons of medication are also discussed. This hands-on, practical manual will be indispensable for families, carers and anyone involved with children and adults with autism who need help with behavioral or emotional challenges.

I am a parent of an ASD child and I work in a specialist school for ASD students.
This book has some concrete tips and methods that can be helpful for parents who are struggling. I know what it's like to feel like nobody is listening or understanding what ASD meltdowns can be like. Parents of neuro-typical kids may benefit from this book as well.
It's written in a clear style that doesn't require one to be a subject specialist (education or psych) to be able to use the book.

I borrowed this book for the second time in the libary to continue reading after being held back by reading other books. Now that I have finished reading it, I have decided to own one so that I can revisit it from time to time for I see the benefit of this book. It is really rewarding.
