NECROSHA! The resurrected dead lay siege to the X-Men's headquarters, and the fight to survive the Black Queen's vengeance begins. But while Warpath and Wolverine realize what's happening, they may be too late to stop it. Because Selene is already well on her way to achieving ultimate power half a world away. And as the rest of the X-Men fight mutants back from the dead, Wolfsbane struggles to survive a very different threat. PLUS! The long-awaited return of the VANISHER.
This is the Necrosha storyline, but without the issues from all the tie-in stuff, you'll be missing a lot. You'd honestly be better off reading X-Necrosha if you want to know everything.
Still, I think this is one of the better Events out there, even if it's old. It's all dark and vampire-y, and a bunch of people come back from the dead and beat the shit out of everything. Plus, it spawned an assload of variant covers that paid homage to some iconic movie posters:
For those of you reading on Marvel Unlimited, this collects issues #21-25
I like how they did this X-Crossover. With all the X-Titles dealing with the same big bad but you don't have to jump from book to book to book. You can just read each book straight through. The Black Queen, Selene, is back and she's resurrected a ton of dead mutants and X-Villains from the past, all under her control. It's like The Blackest Night for the X-Men.
Clayton Crain's art is hit and miss for me. Often it's great. The problem is he uses way too much black and it obscures the art. It's like watching TV with the contrast turned all the way up.
I think this would have been better if I was reading all the X-Men titles relating to this.
So the X-Force is facing off against, probably, their biggest enemy yet. Selene wants ultimate power and she is on a rampage. Doing so she fucks up A LOT of our heroes, and they struggle to gain any type of advantage against her. By the end it's just one big major brawl, which I was a tad sad about, but least was entertaining.
Good: The dialog between the X-Force team is still top notch. Also the fights are pretty epic, usually bloody, and well done.
Bad: It's kind of a messy crossover that I felt lost through most of it.
Overall fun but kind of meh without reading the other parts. A 3 out of 5.
Oh man, this was crazy. At times, it was hard to track the fights going on, with so many different characters going at it. It's like the creators made a list of past X-Men Universe characters and threw most of them in this book. However, due to the nature of the story, there is an inherent sadness to it all. Not only sad, but creepy in the more cerebral and existential (if that's the right word) of ways. Poor James. He really goes to a dark place in this one, old griefs and horrors literally resurrected.
I freaking love this X-Force run. It's dark and bloody and visceral, but the it's also intense and gets you in the gut. There is no holding back from the team, because so much is at stake. The artwork is gorgeous. Clayton Crain is the artist, and he has a way of expressing images in a beautiful way even when the images are nightmarish and horrific. And in this series, there are plenty of both.
I can't give this a five star rating because of the fact that it was confusing and I wasn't always able to keep up with what was going on. But it's very close. Definitely 4.5 stars.
The villain is one of a kind. Truly a horrible being, with no concept of respecting life of any kind. Just understanding power and gaining more of it.
I'm going to be sad when I run out of books in this run. I know they have the Uncanny X-Force and Cable and X-Force, but the members are different. I like this team so much.
This book is an ugly mess. Its action constantly flips between characters that you can barely make out, as it's colored between Moonless Night In Universe Where The Stars Are Too Distant To Reach Black and Vantablack.
In order to differentiate the characters, they are constantly calling out each others' names and describing the action to each other like it's MarXo Polo or Huckle Buckle Mutant. I gave up about halfway through, as I knew the basic premise (The Black Queen, Seline, and her nefarious team resurrects a bunch of dead mutants to terrorize the X-Men, including resurrecting all of Genosha.)
The collection also has the typical Bad Marvel Editorial Decision where they put the issues about the origin of the event at the back, as opposed to letting the story unfold chronologically. Jennifer Grunwald seems to do this regularly, and it's a sign that she should have a different job.
I don't recommend this for any reason. It has no redeeming qualities. Kyle, Yost, and Crain are all better than what's muddily presented in this book.
I found it quite hard to follow at times, especially the fight scenes. The pages were quite dark too but it could have been my lights. Still enjoyed it though!
If you were at all interested in the Necrosha cross-over, but you don't want to read the boring stuff with mediocre art, here is what you do - buy this book, and the New Mutants title by the same name, and you have every relevant moment. Outside of what is covered in these two titles, the rest of the story amounts to Colossus being angry and punching things, and Rogue being poorly drawn.
This book has such amazing art that I am not sure what kind of adjective to apply to it, so I'm going to steal from Yotsuba - IT'S SUPER AMAZING! Many of these characters have never looked this good. Most of them never will again. Every panel is beautiful. Make sure you read it in good light - the inking is so heavy, you can miss most the amazing detail work in the wonderfully rendered shadows.
The story, I admit, is not all that. The characters are great, though, and there is a whole lot of interesting character development. Even Warpath is tolerable in this one, though Ghost Rider's appearance is more than a bit shoehorned in. Wolfsbane's plot line continues to suck, but what do you expect? She's a mutant werewolf chick thing, dating a Norse wolf-God thing. It's furry fantasy material. The only reason that Rahne is even in this book is that the artist likes to draw her in gratuitously tight t-shirts. Personally, I'm not complaining, but that might be a problem for some.
The only real weakness to the story is that it hinges around the temporary resurrection of former X-Men foes as undead mutant zombie things - which really reveals how lame every dead character was. It isn't like Marvel will let go of a good character because of a slight inconvenience like death. They are basically forced to make the undead immortal to explain why Magneto has trouble fighting a bunch of dead Apaches, or Pyro and Super Saber are a terrifying threat. It was nice to see Negatronic Teenage Warhead again, particularly as no one said her name.
Selene is actually a pretty effective villain in this, continuing the X Force tradition of taking old, boring villains, and reinventing them in fascinating ways. If I were immortal, I would wear something that didn't constantly give me a wedgie, but that's neither here nor there. The plot is more of a device to show you some cool shit, including some epically violent fight scenes, and to develop the characters in various directions, but it serves its purpose.
Except for Ghost Rider. F@#k that guy.
There is a heavy Lost Boy aesthetic to this book (evident on the cover) and I like it. The artist goes for a traditional gothic look, and there is a great deal of eye candy, regardless of your gender or preferences. The action sequences are among the best of the year, and the art is absolutely staggering.
The edition I have has ISBN 978-0-7851-6300-8, and collects X-Necrosha: The Gathering, X-Force #21-25, and material from X-Necrosha. On the cover there's Pyro, Archangel, and the Vanisher.
