Ce pourrait être le récit d'un séjour exotique, c'est le voyage intérieur d'un homme arrivé à Ceylan après un long périple, pour achever le voyage intérieur au bout de lui-même. Le narrateur fait lentement naufrage, enlisé dans la solitude et la maladie, frôlé par la folie. Et là, sous l'oeil indifférent des insectes qui se livrent autour de lui à d'effroyables carnages, et des habitants qui marinent dans leur chaleur comme un sombre bestiaire fainéant, l'auteur reconstruit, avec patience et ironie, un monde luxuriant et poétique. Au fil des chapitres, il observe et nous apprend à voir le spectacle mystérieux de ce monde des ombres d'où émergent d'étonnants portraits. Ainsi le lecteur participe à une sorte d'envoûtement dans ce récit bourré comme un pétard d'humour, de sagesse et d'espoir.

About the author

Nicolas Bouvier (1929-1998) was a Swiss writer and photographer.

His travels all over the world incited him to recount his experiences and adventures. His work is marked by a commitment to report what he sees and feels, shorn of any pretence of omniscience, leading often to an intimacy bordering on the mystical. His journey from Geneva to Japan was in many ways prescient of the great eastward wave of hippies that occurred in the sixties and seventies - slow, meandering progress in a small, iconic car, carefully guarded idiosyncrasy, a rite of passage. Yet, it differs in that the travelogues this journey inspired contain deep reflections on man's intimate nature, written in a style very much aware and appreciative of the traditions and possibilities of the language he uses. (He wrote mainly in French, though he does mention writing a series of travel articles in English for a local journal during his stay in Ceylon.)

His most famous books are The Way of the World, The Japanese Chronicles, and The Scorpion Fish.

Putting this in Travel category, though it's really a fictionalized expat life on Ceylon.

Fans of "magical realism" ought to appreciate this story quite a bit; reminded me of Murakami in places. Author has a strong sense of place: You Are definitely There! Characters are clearly differentiated, not "stock" at all.

Book had the feel of inter-connected stories, more than a linear narrative, so fifth star deducted for needing a bit of extra effort to follow. I understand it could be considered a sequel (of a sort) to The Way of the World, which I purchased in French for language practice... someday, but this one stood on its own just fine for me.

Recommended for those who like vivid tropical settings particularly.

So rich in its vocabulary, so beautiful. The setting is the main reason why I picked up this book; every book that is set on an island has this touch of magic and this one wasn’t different.
I wish the story wasn’t so disjointed and even opaque at times. And I also wish it was longer. But I will read this author again for sure in the future.

Nicolas Bouvier arrive à Ceylan comme un morceau de bois égaré sur une plage, rongé par l'eau et le sel. Nicolas est malade, il ne comprends ni son environnement, ni les codes qui régissent l'île. Il reflète avec ironie ses journées où le temps passe au goutte à goutte. Grands observateur, il décrit avec passion la vie des petits insectes peuplant sa chambre ainsi que les grands insectes à 2 pattes nommé "humain". Tout se mélange jusqu'à ce que la vie reprenne le dessus. Le récit d'un aventurier dans une très belle langue française.

A story about author's trip in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), about his inner torments, his love and hate for this mystic land and its superstitious, poor people. A very rich vocabulary, lots of figures of speech, all spiced up with a drop of bitter humor. (I would have liked it even more if it weren't sooooo many insects all over... :D)

“Chaque homme a son roman préféré dont on a jamais entendu parler” lisais-je justement hier. Je reviens à celui-ci à chaque visite familiale et m’émerveille des phrases ici et là que je considère comme de vieux amis, du voyage intérieur solitaire mais bien présent au monde que fait ici Bouvier, le tout mêlé à une expérience personnelle encore un peu irréelle d’avoir visité et être resté une dizaine de semaines près de Galle, du haut de mes 21 ans, sur les traces de ce précurseur du nomade numérique d’aujourd’hui, qui ici est bien seul et se présente avec ses angoisses sans ego, ni préférence pour son point de vue.

Ce qui m’a frappé cette fois c’est que le récit témoigne de la sensation véridique de l’atmosphère des tropiques, le passage des heures avant l’aube au bord de la mer qui me sont restés lorsqu’à mon tour je les ressentis, et qui en somme m’a toujours poussé à explorer et s’immerger davantage dans le monde, jusqu’à en arriver à aujourd’hui!

Am văzut că lirismul acestor texte e foarte apreciat. Mie un singur lucru mi-a plăcut la Bouvier (și pare că trece neobservat de majoritatea cititorilor): umorul lui negru, foarte ascuțit și foarte subtil. Altfel, stilul ăsta poetic de a scrie proză mi-aduce prea mult aminte de "compunerile" care îmi aduceau premii în școală.

On ne peut pas vraiment parler de recit de voyage. Plus une sorte de nonchalance et de torpeur dans laquelle Nicolas Bouvier observe les insectes qui vivent autour et avec lui. J'y ai cependant retrouvé certaines sensations que j'avais eu lors de mon voyage au Sri Lanka.

I'm used to read, and more than that, I'm used to read fantasy with complicated world-building. That didn't prevent me from not understanding a single thing in this book!

This is a book for school, meaning that I'm supposed to have understood it and be able to talk about it in a test. Will I be able to though? Haha, no.

I hated this book, one of the worst I ever read. I mean it literally goes in all directions with no structure and changes subject from one chapter to the other without really mentioning the subject of a past chapter again. And no subject ever makes real sense.

I could rant about this book for ages.

Well, I think you understand I didn't like it. I don't have anything else to say.

06.01.2014 Ich habe auf Ö1 ein kluges Radiofeature über Bouvier, und im Besonderen dieses Buch gehört, nochmals gehört und jetzt bin ich voller Lesehoffung. Zehn Seiten habe ich schon gelesen und das schaut noch besser aus als gehofft.
13.01.2014 So ein unglaubliches Buch, so gewaltig, so dicht in seiner Sprache, vielschichtig, genau und neu. Ich bin hin und weg. Krankheit, schwarze Magie, Fieberträume, Delirium, Insektenkriege verdichtet im doppelten Sinn. So lange vom Autor destilliert bis ein hochprozentiges Sprachdestillat überblieb. Ich glaube dass auch die Übersetzung sehr gelungen ist. Wieder einmal fühle ich mich reich beschenkt.

Povestea unică și profundă a sejurului de 9 luni pe care autorul l-a avut în Ceylon în anul 1955, este o lectură "caniculară". Mai mult decât o istorisire, cartea te transpune în privirea și mai ales în mintea autorului. În același mod în care toropeala il amețește, sentimentul de apăsare te pătrunde și te înspăimântă. Timpul se scurge mult mai încet în această lume tropicală, iar izolarea îl face pe călător un fin analist al lumii înconjurătoare, unde dinamismul vieții se măsoară în activitatea micilor vietăți-colocatari sau în actele obscure de magie.

Wow, un petit choc littéraire quand même. C'est vraiment "écrit", une langue exceptionnelle, vivante et imagée! J'ai parfois eu du mal à suivre dans le métro, pas adapté à une lecture entre deux stations. Et j'avais peut être eu besoin d'un dico à portée de main.

Written long after Bouvier had these experiences in what is now Sri Lanka, in fact, near to three decades after in a semi-state of inebriation, drawing on memories of the nine months he spent there, this curious work is hard to pigeonhole : it is not a travelogue or guide, certainly not poetry although it has some wonderful, florid language, it is hardly fictitious, yet there are touches of magical realism, a roman-à-clef of sorts might be the easiest description and that still doesn't fit the bill totally.

Galle is situated on the southern tip of the teardrop island, formerly Ceylon. It is here the 25 year old Bouvier spends his time in straightened circumstances, writing for periodicals, moving between the spice shop, the cheap eateries, the beach and his sparsely decorated room.

In his frugal set-up he shows an abnormality of entomophilia, channeled by boredom or the onset of a half lucid fever possibly brought on by malaria or amoebiasis. He is not healthy here. Later he says that he stayed on the island for seven months too long. Not entirely sure what we are meant to see here or what Bouvier wants? 3 star-fish.

Le Poisson-scorpion est une avarie dans l'oeuvre de Nicolas Bouvier. Le voyageur s'arrête. A Ceylan, il rumine sa malaria et la fatigue d'un voyage peut-être sans but. L'émerveillement dont a jailli L'Usage du monde s'est tari. L'élan qui a poussé le jeune Bouvier à travers l'Europe, la Turquie, la Perse, et jusqu'à la pointe sud de l'Inde est retombé. On parle peut de ce livre de Nicolas Bouvier où son regard, toujours vif, devient dur, presque sarcastique, presque ricanant. Les scènes exaltantes du voyage et les précisions érudites laissent place à des contemplations obscures et des errements supersticieux. Mais cela vaut bien la peine de visiter le Purgatoire, quant on a Bouvier comme guide.

It is a difficult book to assess. In the beginning I could not believe how disparaging he wrote about the Sri Lankan people, there is no redeeming personality. But then I realised Bouvier was severely depressed when he wrote the book. No wonder he hated everything and everyone and was full of self pity. So, two stars instead of one...

Ce livre est différent de mes lectures habituelles et c'est un gros gros gros coup de coeur. Malgré le temps que j'ai mis à le lire, dû à la richesse du vocabulaire, certainement, je l'ai beaucoup apprécié. Il contient énormément de description, nous parle d'insecte, de voyage (de soi),... On suit le personnage principal lors de son voyage à travers cette île qui lui permet de se libérer.

Read NYT book review interview with Mike White who mentioned this book as a favorite. Set in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), this wonderful story of an uncomfortable traveler’s dealings with strange creatures, human and otherwise, has such a creepy/funny sensibility. I imagine it may have had some influence on the upcoming third season of The White Lotus, which White says will be set in South Asia.

Although the writing is clearly fancy - and, in all honesty, pompous - the disconnect story is not engaging enough to justify its lack of identifiable temporality and sense. The descriptions are somewhat suffocating at points, and their value is mostly found in the richness of vocabulary used.

Langue ciselée, vocabulaire extraordinairement riche, très beau style, mais ce style de narration ne me plaît pas. Je ne suis pas entrée dans l'histoire, en fait il n'y en a pas vraiment - ce sont les sensations de NB qui sont décrites ici. J'ai peiné à le finir.

Très bon livre, sombre et étrange. J'ai eu parfois du mal a accrochés parfois à cause de la mentalité de Nicolas Bouvier, des événements ect qui peuvent être un peu lents ou flous et parfois parce que le style d'écriture et le vocabulaire ont été un peu complexe. Mais j'ai rarement lu un livre aussi bien écrit, je le relierai plus tard après avoir progressé un peu parce que sah quel banger
