"Finally! The ultimate guide to the LinkedIn-fueled job search. A must-read for any job seeker." —Manny Contomanolis, Director of Career Services, Harvard University
Get the inside edge on finding — and being found for — your dream job.
Written by two former LinkedIn employees , Linked is the definitive guide to building a career in a digital world. Step-by-step, it demystifies LinkedIn—which is now synonymous with the job market—and empowers every professional, from the newly minted college graduate to the midlife career-changer, with the most important strategies to win the job search game .
Clear, engaging, and highly practical, Linked shows you how
The not just a great job, but the future of your dreams.
Omar Garriott and Jeremy Schifeling are career coaches and hiring managers who have worked at companies like Apple, Khan Academy, Salesforce, and Teach for America. But they first joined forces to lead education product marketing at LinkedIn , where they saw first-hand how powerful the platform is for finding a job and building a network (it's why they call LinkedIn "The Great Opportunity Democratizer").
Now they've compiled all the most effective techniques they learned inside the company to help you do the same in your own career. From understanding what recruiters are looking for to getting a leg up in any hiring process, Linked is their crash course on the insider secrets that will get you in the door and get you hired.
Highly informative with loads of examples and checklists to optimize your LinkedIn profile for today's modern job search. Networking is emphasized, even for those who do not like it. With LinkedIn, networking is not the lame activity as it was in the past and can actually be fun. Essentially, the author's state the relationship building is the key to landing a job and to also expanding your horizons, by talking with people in the same industry or industries that you are looking to get into. Makes sense.
If you are keen to land a different job, check this book out. It has many valuable tips that you can put to good use. I especially liked the checklists provided after you have optimized your LinkedIn profile.
Considering how popular LinkedIn is and how valuable it can be, it would be great to see cover letters and resumes become obsolete, where employers / recruiters need only to view your profile before considering you for an interview. I think the process would be much more simplified and with a LinkedIn profile, you can showcase yourself in a much better way through storytelling - where you've been, where you'd like to go and the value you bring.
This book really surprised me. It has far more helpful information than I anticipated. As they say, you don't know what you don't know. It's great to learn how to make LinkedIn work for you. If you are new to LinkedIn or a casual user, the book will help you make the most of your LinkedIn account.
Detailed yet appealingly upbeat overview of what LinkedIn is, how it works, and how it can make your life better. Mostly designed for workers who are recently out of school, but there's plenty of useful information for an oldster like me.
Here's some of what I learned:
• LinkedIn has an About section at the top of the page. Include keywords from the job listing (or from your industry generally) in the About section to get more attention from the ATS, or Applicant Tracking System, that will vet your application.
• If you want to email someone at a company but you don't know their email address, visit Hunter.io to help you find the email pattern for their organization. (In my experience, long-established and large companies such as Apple can be quirky in terms of email patterns, but this is worth a shot.)
• LinkedIn lets you do advanced People searches for specific job titles. Add the word "hiring" to this search to help you find out which managers are actively hiring right now.
• On the main LinkedIn page, go to Jobs > Interview Prep for sample questions and practice opportunities.
• https://www.thejobinsiders.com/book allows you to get a free deck that sums up some of the most important points in the book and gives you an idea of the book's style and tone.
• https://linkedin.github.io/career-exp... lets you look for new career paths and job opportunities using the skills you already have. I didn't find this very helpful, but it may work for you.
• The authors believe that LinkedIn Premium isn't worth the cost for most people, but they enthusiastically recommend a free trial, which lasts a month. The Premium version includes a Company Insights section that lets you look at hiring trends and other data. This can be useful while you're researching and during an interview.
• https://theorg.com/ has a massive collection of org charts, so you can better understand the structure of a company you're applying to.
• If you're interviewing with a hiring manager, try to get them talking about themselves. Ask them what drew them to the company and what they find satisfying about it. This helps to build a bond with them.
• One of the authors of this book has a site called https://www.breakinto.tech/ , which I found useful. I've never considered a career in market research, but I have some of the skills for it.
Looking for a guide to optimize my LinkedIn profile, I stumbled upon this book. It starts by highlighting the differences between old job search strategies and the new one, which heavily relies on LinkedIn. In short, the first key step is to analyze the kinds of roles one is looking for, followed by creating a strong presence on LinkedIn, searching for desired jobs, networking with the right people, and finally, conducting research about the job after securing a position.
The authors break down this whole process into five steps: exploring, positioning, searching, networking, and researching. Throughout the book, they also share tools and templates to help readers explore options, optimize their profiles, and network effectively.
What I liked most is that the book emphasizes free-to-use tools for the most part. Additionally, the later section of the book covers advanced techniques, adding an extra layer of value for the readers.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and found it incredibly helpful in navigating the complexities of LinkedIn for job hunting.
No fluff, no time wasted! LinkedIn by Jeremy Shifeling and Omar Garriott gave me exactly what I needed to crack the code of strategic job search. It saved me the hassle of navigating an endless supply of career advice over social media, most of which is generic, contradictory, and just not helpful. This book provides detailed and practical steps for people like me who see the job search as a daunting task we avoid tackling for fear of getting rejected and hurt. The authors drew on their expertise as people who actually know the ins and outs of LinkedIn. Plus, the book is full of valuable free tools and resources that really make a difference. Since applying its advice, I've seen a significant increase in my LinkedIn connections-quality ones, profile visibility, and overall self-confidence.
Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to stop guessing and start landing real opportunities.
The title of book does a good job of explaining what the authors of book teach you.
Pros: - Mentions all the tips and tricks to enhance your profile as job seeker - Call to actions checklist at end of each chapter is a 5 star feature of the book. - Visual screenshots of the ways to enhance your profile - Templates for cold outreach, connecting to 2nd degree connections.
Cons: - Most of the tips in the books suggest the use of Search option along with filters. LinkedIn, unfortunately, caps the number of request you can make before shoving the retry premium banner on your face. - the anecdotes of various students and colleague mentioned in the book did not add value
After reading the book, I have decided to Create Content on LinkedIn. That's the antidote to the problem which 'Linked' is trying to address.
I came across this book while finishing my EMBA at IMD Business School, and oh boy this was a great eye opener. I've been neglecting LindekIN for quite some time till I knew Jeremy Schifeling. Jeremy is an absolute expert in LinkedIn and this book is an absolute MUST for all of us, trying to stand out the average job seeker. It provides great advice's and tips how to use LinkedIN in the best possible way. I've heard in the past that the best jobs aren't posted in LinkedIN but now I know this was only partially true because my profile wasn't good enough to stand out. Thanks to this book I know have a real good LinkedIN profile and can better understand how the job market works.
Worth far more than the price for job seekers and entrepreneurs!
No matter how active you might be on LinkedIn, you probably don’t know all the nooks, crannies, and hacks that can get you opportunities as an employee or entrepreneur. These guys cover them all.
Highly recommended for the info on navigating the Alumni tool alone (the authors built it while working for LinkedIn).
You have more control over your career and job search than you think. These guys show you how to cultivate it.
The star rating for this depends on your level of experience with LinkedIn.
If you are new to LinkedIn, or haven’t really gone beyond setting up a basic profile, this is FABULOUS! It’s literally a play by play for how to utilize the platform.
If you’ve successfully utilized LI for job searching, networking, and career development, there is not much new information. You may find a few new tidbits of info but not enough to warrant reading.
TLDR: Great for LinkedIn newbies or career changers. Not great for experienced LinkedIn users.
This book is great for someone new to LinkedIn, resumes, or pitching yourself. Since I am comfortable with those aspects and have optimized my LinkedIn profile over the last few years, I did not get much actionable value from it. If you are new to these topics, I recommend reading this book. However, if you have gone through business school, done sales, or used LinkedIn a lot, you might not find much value. I rate its impact on me three out of five. You can see my LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/harshalnp... or https://www.harshal-patil.com/
This book is transforming my job search. I'm transitioning after over a decade in education, and so much has changed since I last looked for work. My techniques from past searches were not working. I discovered this book on the Career Contessa podcast and I am starting to have hope in my job search again!!! I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for employment, especially if you are just finishing school or have not looked for a new job in the last few years.
For any professional who uses LinkedIn, (and if you’re not, WHY not?), this book is a MUST! Worth 10 times the value as it gives insight into what recruiters are looking for, how to make the most effective profile, the tools on LinkedIn you wouldn’t normally know about, and the value of connections! I will reference this frequently and have already given my profile and resume a much needed makeover!
I'm in the middle of a job hunt and this book has been a lifesaver. Throw out everything you know and the traditional advice about resumes and how to find a job. It is a whole new world out there now and this book has a lot of great advice on how to navigate this new world. Written by two ex-LinkedIn employees, they focus on LinkedIn as a tool. However, they are not teaching you how to build a profile, it is building one specifically to aid in the job hunt.
As a experienced professional working across borders, internationally, being able to position myself and strengthening my personal brand so that recruiters across the world are discovering and interested to contact me. The world of LinkedIn, has made it more competitive compared to the past. Being able to position myself as stronger then others, and make my profile market myself well. This book hit that goal and target.
After reading three similar books, this one stood out. It offers a five-step strategy to hack the interview process, using LinkedIn's hidden features to boost your chances. The insights into keywords, hashtags, and LinkedIn’s algorithm are invaluable.
This book goes beyond basics, showing how to find connections, new jobs, and secure referrals. It’s a practical, actionable guide to position yourself as a top candidate. A must-read for serious job seekers.
I was looking for a book that describes LinkedIn, and here's the hack "I was looking " so I understand the importance already. I thought they may have stacked a little bit longer in describing the importance, but other than that the book is an enormous tool to build your LinkedIn account and your resume from scratch.
If only I had, had this when I first started on LinkedIn.
Jeremy and Omar break LinkedIn down into digestible, actionable chunks.
Having this resource, one feels less "alone" in the 'sea of so-called help and guidance' that is out there for supposedly beefing up one's LI presence.
Invest in this resource to get a leg up on your LI presence and make it more effective.
Increased popularity in Linkedin has transformed it into a professional version of social media sites like instagram or X, which puts off a lot of people that are not actively engaged in mainstream social media sites. Having a guide that helps you navigate throughout the noise to land your dream job is valuable and this book is every bit worth it.

I purchased this in preparation for a future job search, so I can't yet speak to its effectiveness. The advice on creating a strong LinkedIn profile is solid, well-structured, and easy to follow. It provides valuable insights on optimizing your profile to stand out, improving visibility to recruiters, and leveraging LinkedIn for networking.
Unlike many other guides to LinkedIn, this book offers really simple and tangible steps to help improve your LinkedIn presence. I’ve tried numerous podcasts and YouTube videos and have found that this book is far more effective and easy-to-follow with LinkedIn optimization.
This is a great book for newcomers to LinkedIn. This book is very easy to read and contains tons of valuable information. I discovered many features of LinkedIn that I didn't know existed from reading this book.
This could have been way shorter. Just a bunch of lists, honestly. The chapter recaps/action items were the only things I really paid attention to and read thoroughly. Good tips and tools regardless, and I definitely learned some things.
The authors have written the most comprehensive guide for job seekers to optimize their LinkedIn profiles that I have found. It's really great, with step-by-step guides and examples that make it all really easy to follow and complete.
Linked is a practical guide to using LinkedIn effectively. It offers useful tips on building a standout profile, connect meaningfully, and understanding how recruiters search for candidates. A helpful read for anyone serious about their job search.
Really great book, explains very well how Linkedin algorithm works and how to crack it. I considered it a must if you are job hunting, doesn't matter if you are a freshman or a Principal Engineer, this will really help you anyways (more if you are a freshman, tough).
