Art and Revolution
Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer, conductor, music theorist, and essayist, primarily known for his operas (later called music dramas). Wagner’s musical style is often considered the epitome of classical music’s Romantic period, due to its unprecedented exploration of emotional expression. He transformed musical thought through his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork), the synthesis of all the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, epitomized by his monumental four-opera cycle The Ring of the Niebelung (1876). Wagner even went so far as to build his own opera-house to try to stage these works as he had imagined them. His literary friendship with Franz Liszt led to a long-lived correspondence later compiled in the two volumes of Corrrespondence of Wagner and Liszt (1889); a book that was attributed to both musicians. Among his other famous works are Tristan and Isolde, which broke important new musical ground, My Life (in two volumes) (1880), and The Flying Dutchman.

i see now that wegener's fear has become our present world. the artist will never be free. salary will always beat creativity. we see this a lot in the way films are produced these days.

December 22, 2024Um discurso tribunício como o de A Arte e a Revolução necessita de explicação prévia, por duas razões que lhe são exteriores: a de a obra escrita de Wagner ser praticamente desconhecida entre nós e, depois, pelo facto da sua aura andar associada à barbárie nazi, aos totalitarismos de direita, ao pangermanismo e outras taras da era imperialista. Esta imagem, (...) continua a ser servida ao «grande público» através do audiovisual ou em produções espetaculares como Apocalypse Now.

Quem se der ao trabalho de lhe compulsar as obras completas, constatará a impossibilidade de lhe atribuir uma ideologia reaccionária. Para sermos objetivos não podemos iludir o verdadeiro ponto negro do seu percurso, ou seja, o anti-semitismo assumido(...).(...) Examinado à lupa, tem as características do «anti-semitismo de esquerda» (se o termo tem algum significado) comum a personalidades como E. Dühring, Proudhon, Blanqui, etc., que identificavam o judeu com a especulação financeira. (...) Resume-se a isto o seu anti-semitismo, sem nunca juntar a sua voz aos corifeus franceses, polacos, russos, alemães ou ucranianos, que apontavam para a expulsão, a escravidão e até para a supressão física como soluções para a «questão judia». Ficar a saber que Wagner tinha sido um socialista ferrenho, colega de Bakunin numa dessas escaramuças que estavam a acontecer naqueles tempos conturbados é uma surpresa.
Ficar a saber que chamar-lhe "nacionalista" não só é uma distorção, mas uma completa fabricação que a cultura criou (fomentado pela apropriação política e cultural de Wagner pelos nazis), e que Wagner era um cosmopolita e antimilitarista convicto é ainda mais surpreendente.
Mas depois ler o texto todo e ficar a saber o que o homem tinha para dizer é a cereja no topo do bolo. A sua oposição figadal a todas as estruturas de poder que escravizam o ser humano, o uso de termos "proletariado" e "revolução", e acima a sucessiva reiteração da ideia de a emancipação e libertação são para todos, nada disto pode ter qualquer coisa a ver com outra coisa que não: humanismo. Aqui vai uma frase que não me tem saído da cabeça estes dias, uma das muitas pérolas do livro:

Art and Revolution de Richard Wagner es una obra que defiende la idea de que el arte, y especialmente la música, debe tener un papel central en la transformación cultural y política de la sociedad. Sabiendo que todo lo que predica Wagner aquí unos años después lo dejará de lado en Bayreuth, mi lectura es parcial.
Lo que tiene que decir, aunque no sea tampoco lo más original del mundo, está bien explicado y dentro de que no se alinea del todo con mis propias teorías, sobre todo por la idealización de la creación como algo que nos conecta con la naturaleza (aunque sí defiende cosas como el dejar de ver el arte como fruto lucrativo que me parecen correctas), no me ha parecido una lectura desagradable, a lo mejor un poco reiterativa, eso sí.
Le doy 2 estrellas porque no puedo dejar pasar su nacionalismo y su racismo, que aunque en esta obra no sean punto focal, ya se pueden entrever.
(aclarar también que es una lectura para un trabajo de la universidad, lo que me hace una lectora muy sesgada, pues mi motivo de estudio es justamente su nacionalismo)

Pode ser ligeiramente difícil de ler, devido à linguagem utilizada não se encontrar corrente na contemporaneidade. No entanto, chega a ser surpreendente como uma obra escrita no séc.XIX apresenta problemas atuais, torna-se intemporal.

certeiro ensaio que pressagia a chegada do vil monstro pop que esmaga o cérebro das adormecidas gerações do Presente.
bonita meditação sobre a essência da arte e o seu primordial e sagrado objectivo. pena que as revoluções da época, e as que se seguiram, não conseguiram resgatar a liberdade. o capital e a imbecilidade vingaram. o povo e a arte permanecem acorrentados e o planeta implodirá antes da revolução.
a minha ignorância não me permite determinar se o fracasso das revoluções que tanto entusiasmaram Wagner mudou a estética das suas óperas. Ou se a perspectiva que o compositor depositava sobre a revolução seriam comparáveis às miradas que um proxeneta poderá apontar a uma mulher bonita.
não deveria a obra de arte total chegar a todos os homens (respeitando o precário equilíbrio entre universalidade e servilismo)? não deveria a pomposa gesamtkunstwerk ser acessível ao pobre? como pode o pobre identificar-se com o imaginário clássico e mitológico da antiguidade? Não deveriam as valquírias de Wagner terem sido substituídas por padeiras e lavadeiras, e os heróis serem camponeses ou operários cagados de carvão e sangue que irrompem pelos palácios adentro para expurgar da face da terra os filhos da puta dos vampiros?
no fim de contas, Wagner vivia num palácio e a obra de arte total já era utópica.

A real gem. In this small pamphlet one may find the entire philosophy and political ideas of Richard Wagner. It contains among many other things the very concept of the "Ring". The attentive reader may also discern how much this work has influenced Friedrich Nietzsche's infamous "Birth of Tragedy: Wagner had conceived the essence of Greek Tragedy and the importance of the "Apollonian" spirit 20 years before Nietzsche had even started writing his essay. The main difference is that Nietzsche's controversial work lacks Wagner's clarity; obviously young Nietzsche tried to extend his master's ideas but he was devoid of moderation and balance.
This is the second time I read this book and now I am even more convinced that it is a masterpiece.
I would therefore end my small note, by quoting Wagner's final words of Art And Revolution:
"... Thus would Jesus have shown us that we all alike are men and brothers; while Apollo would have stamped this mighty bond of brotherhood with the seal of strength and beauty, and led mankind from doubt of its own worth to consciousness of its highest godlike might. Let us therefore erect the altar of the future, in Life as in the living Art, to the two sublimest teachers of mankind: Jesus, who suffered for all men; and Apollo, who raised them to their joyous dignity !"

It's interesting to observe how Wagner developed his idea on humanity, society and the unions of Arts. The French translation done by Mesnil is also easy to read. From this essay, you can definitely tell the German ideology Wagner intertwined into his creation.
