I hate to admit I’ve been loving this series so far. This second issue was extremely cringey, but it takes me back to my emo/alt high school days when I was obsessed with the 90’s edginess, dark themes, gore and bleak humor. I would have gave it 5 stars and a stellar review back then. But I’ll knock it down a star for the problematic language it uses, that is definitely not suitable for 2022 lol.
JTHM is not just about gore it is also quite philosophical. All the issues are filled with monologues and witty comments here and there.
Johnny hates mankind cause mankind always hated him and at the end there was nothing to love about mankind in general anyway so why not get rid of it little by little?
I am not feeling much better about this second one. The first two arcs, I thought, were alright. They even seemed to have something interesting to say. Then we got to the diarrhea. Yeah. I didn't need that. Nor many of the things that followed it. There was one more arc that I thought was interesting, but again ... with so much shit (pun TOTALLY intended) I can't imagine that the glimmerings I got from those arcs were purposeful.
I have to step back for a moment, because I can't say these comics are "bad." They are definitely not my taste. To me, the humor seems very haphazard. There is no reason for any of the events happening in the story. I dunno ... five more issues left. Let's see what insanity awaits.
These comics are so problematic, but I love them. Sometimes you need an outlet. This is mine. I used to love them in high school and this was a trip down memory lane. I remember this one being my favorite because of one of the side stories. It’s terribly awesome and crude and vulgar. It may not be for the faint of heart, but if you’re feeling murderous or hateful, this may be for you.
What a lot of people don't realize about johnny, he's actually pretty damn aware and smart. He kind of plays on the ignorance of other humans for fun which I think he may find a little more enjoyable than the actual homicides.
