A sequel to "City Girl", which brings the reader up-to-date with Devlin, Caroline and Maggie, the men in their lives, and their triumphs and disasters.
Patricia Scanlan was born in Dublin, where she still lives. Her #1 bestsellers include Apartment 3B; Finishing Touches; Foreign Affairs; Promises, Promises; Mirror, Mirror; City Girl; City Woman; City Lives; and Francesca’s Party. She has sold millions of books worldwide and is translated into many languages. Patricia is the series editor and a contributing author to the award winning Open Door literacy series, which she developed for adult literacy.
I read this book after reading 'City Lives', so in the wrong order! Still it was a good easy read, even though I kind of knew what happened in the future to these charcters. I do Like Patricia Scanlan books, they are very comfortable books to read.
I really struggled to get past the first 100 of 650 pages.....twice....but after some determination, I did eventually get to the end of the book.
I found that just as you were getting into a character, then you switched to a different character and we're constantly chopping and changing, which made the storyline feel a little disconnected. There were a few chapters where I questioned what part the content played in the storyline and felt more as though the author was trying to fill pages.
This book is the second in a trilogy, I didn't read the first, but I was able to pick up what happened. I feel like this story could have been condensed and might have been a better read.
I was very eager to find out what happened to the three women that got me hooked in City Girl. I did accidentally start reading City Lives as it is somewhere listed as #2 but paused to read this. These women inspire me to focus more on my own goals and the men infuriate me often (except Luke, Luke's perfect). And I loved learning more about Ireland in the past as I've lived here for 2+ years. As an aspiring writer, I hope I can be half as good as Patricia Scanlan in capturing my audience someday.
Loved this 2nd part of the trilogy. A group of 3 best friends all with their own issues to deal with. Just as good as part one,one of my favourite books. Read this a few times now, love it. Definitely worth reading.
loved this book out of the series, just great writing and so with the times then,,, now I am about to read the final in the series,, thank you Patricia Scanlan
A lovely sequel to the first book. It’s so easy to fall into Devlin, Caroline and Maggie’s stories. Well written characters and stories that carry you away to somewhere else for a while.
Devlin's flair and ambition has made a success of the 'City Girl' health and leisure complex. Expansion is next on her agenda, But what of Luke Reilly, a man used to getting his own way? His interest is more than professional. Soon Devlin is forced to make a decision that will have a huge impact on her life.Caroline, still coming to terms with her husband's revelations, has to do some serious thinking. Can she face the future on her own or will she resort to the crutches of drugs and drink that have always carried her through?Maggie, torn between motherhood and career, finds her marriage under threat. Her husband's total lack of support enrages and frustrates her. After years of putting other people's needs before her own, Maggie has to decide if it's time to put herself first.
Not my favorite Patricia Scanlan series, actually least favorite of all, but I felt like a light read and this did the job. This follows three women's lives and some bits are more interesting than others. I enjoyed Caroline's early chapters in Ireland and with Richard, but found the overseas bits boring. I didn't really warm too much to Devlin. I didn't dislike her but she was a little cliched with her perfect Luke. Or something. Not sure. As is typical, Patricia writes a good bitch character and I was amused by Maggie's sister in law (whose name escapes me), I would have enjoyed more of her here. Maybe she's in the next book, as that story really didn't resolve. Or the one with Luke's secretary. I have the final book so I will start on that next.
*cringe* nothing to kill the mood like declaring you 'don't have aids'???!! Lots here that just had me shaking my head in disbelief. Had a feel of Fifty Shades about it what with the jealous secretary and the amazingly, stunningly, beautiful, perfect Devlin. Basically scan read so that I could get to the end.
