SNAKE EATER

Rate this book
They fought a war without rules, and taught the enemy the legend of the Green Beret. No fighting men in the world were a match for the U.S. Army Special Forces, the men of the Green Beret. But in the chaos of Vietnam, where enemies, allies, friends, and traitors all shared a landscape of terror, the Green Berets had to develop their own tactics and draw closer to the only people they could each other. Don Bendell looks back at life and death at A-Team Camp 242, Dak Pek. From clandestine missions alongside the fierce and proud Montagnard tribesman to wild rides in bullet-riddled Hueys, Bendell tells of firefights, LRRP missions, dust-offs, air strikes, prisoner interrogations, and acts of courage. Most of all, Bendell captures the spirit of the men who were there.

I always enjoy a good palate cleanser between books and I have been making it a goal to read more non-fiction books this year which I have been really enjoying.

This was a quick and interesting read and read similarly to “The Things They Carried.” The Vietnam war and this time in history is one that always intrigues me. This book was a glimpse into some accounts and stories of the highly Classified MACV-SOG, Don Bendell, former U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) Captain along with some of those who he served alongside (loved the epilogue for this). Some will make you chuckle, some will show you the bonds and camaraderie of brotherhood in grueling times/conditions, others will make your heart drop, showing the very real and raw emotions of this time (before, during and after). Also learned how Special Forces became to be known as “Snake-Eaters.”

Look, I’m always gonna give five stars to those who fought, so that includes this author and those he served with, American and indigenous. But I almost gave this book two stars for chronic dick swinging, chest pounding, and hearsay. Lots of war stories, some of which overlap with stories I’ve heard elsewhere. Squeaks in at 2.5 stars because I’m a softie I guess. The contrast with Plaster’s SOG couldn’t be greater despite some of the same personnel and missions being covered. I really can’t recommend this and doubt I’ll read anything else from this author.

A good account of American special forces in Vietnam. It was gritty and pulled no punches.
