The Millionaire Murders

Rate this book
DCI Lesley Clarke has too many suspects to choose from when a wealthy lawyer and her young boyfriend are found brutally murdered in a Sandbanks mansion.

Was it the victim's ex-husband, resentful at her new lifestyle? Her business associates, who she's recently angered? Or a drug addict employee?

Lesley and her team must unravel the evidence and find the real killer, while also investigating the disappearance of local journalist Sadie Dawes. Did Sadie go on planned leave, as her manager insists? Or did she get too close to the truth about DCI Mackie's death?

Lesley and the team need to juggle two cases, office politics and PR problems in book 5 of the bestselling Dorset Crime series.

My name's Rachel McLean and I write stories you can't put down, with characters you'll be rooting for.

I'm best known for my Dorset Crime series, which has sold over a million copies. The first book in that series, The Corfe Castle Murders, won the 2021 Kindle Storyteller Award.

Here's what Clare Balding (the lead judge) had to say about the book:

'I particularly enjoyed the detail of the landscape and the humorous oddities of Dorset life. I enjoyed the richness of the characters, complexity of life for a working mother who is thrown into a new environment and has to prove herself, all over again.'

But The Corfe Castle Murders is by no means my only book. I've published five series and am working on two new ones, all of which connect. You'll find characters from each series in one or more of the other ones, so you (and I) get to follow them as they take on new challenges.

For example:

DCI Lesley Clarke is Zoe's boss in the DI Zoe Finch series and then moves to Dorset where she becomes the star of the Dorset Crime series.
DS Mo Uddin is Zoe's best friend and sidekick, then moves to Scotland for the McBride & Tanner series.
DC Tina Abbott is a key character in the Dorset Crime series and plays an important role in the new Lyme Regis Women's Swimming Club series of mysteries which stars her mum, Annie.
Zaf Williams starts off in the DI Zoe Finch series then moves to London and is one of the stars of the London Cosy Mysteries series (along with his colleague Diana and Gus the cat).
Dr Petra McBride appears in no fewer than three series and I'm planning a new series for her in 2026.
And not to be outdone, Zoe Finch has two series in which she stars: the DI Zoe Finch series of 'Deadly' books, and the Cumbria Crime series.
Once you get to know these characters, you'll find plenty of books to keep you entertained. And I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

You can read a full list of the series and books on my books page. Each series is designed to be read in order but which series you go for first is really up to you.

So many secrets!

As usual, in this (so far) last book in the series is fantastic! I am fully vested in this series, and I want to know what's going to happen next in the series. This plot was original, and fast paced. And the underlying sub plot is really picking up. And involves so many people that shouldn't be. The twists keep you keen to know what's going to happen next! And I want to see how the different relationships are going to pan out. I can hardly wait for the next nook in this series to come out!

So if I was being nice this would be a three star read however, the ending of this book really rubbed me the wrong way so I can’t give it more than two stars. This is part of a series but I don’t think it’s essential to read the others in order to make sense of this, but apparently I need to continue this series to get any satisfaction out of it.

I am starting to come away from these kind of series now where we follow a main character (usually some sort of cop) solving different crimes. I don’t know if these series just don’t interest me anymore or whether I read way too many and now they are too samey. I did read over twenty Alex Cross books and I fell completely out of love with James Patterson in the process. I now prefer my thrillers to be domestic, with little or no authorities, just your average Joe on the hunt for answers or revenge.

So back to the book (sorry for the little rant), this was fairly well written, but quite repetitive I did feel like the author didn’t give the reader enough credit to follow along so just kept repeating the 'important' bits and it became quite jarring. The dialogue wasn’t great either, this is fast becoming a bugbear of mine, I hate it when characters speak to each other like robots – I just refuse to believe people speak to each other like this. None of the characters had personality and I didn’t care about any of them. Due to the characters having a lack of personality they did blend together now and then and I found myself reading back to figure out which officer was which (especially the women for some reason).

Now let’s get to the point I made at the beginning. I had to drop this book down by a whole star because the plot doesn’t get fully resolved and right at the end of the book it says to read the next in the series to find out what happened. NO! I find it so annoying when authors do this, especially in a thriller, its so unsatisfying to the reader. I won’t be picking up the next book, I aren’t that fussed about what happened and I am sure I would have forgotten all about this book in a week.

I enjoyed this book but I’m getting tired of the plot lines being dragged through 5 books now. It is getting annoying rather than suspenseful. Tie up the stories about the “suicide” and the lawyer girlfriend and move on.

A pleasant enough read, especially for a holiday. Not particularly exciting but interesting when Sandbanks Poole and Bournemouth were mentioned

A lawyer is found murdered in her own bed in her holiday home on Sandbanks (the UK's Millionaire's Row) alongside a much younger man by her Spanish housekeeper Ines and her Romanian boyfriend Vali.

DCI Lesley Clarke is called in to investigate, but then the reporter Sadie Dawes is reported as not having returned from her holiday (or even having gone) and suddenly she is investigating a disappearance (possibly murder) as well as two murders. Is Sadie's disappearance linked to her investigation of DCI Mackie's death? Who would want the lawyer dead and who is her mysterious companion? With the suspects mounting thick and fast Lesley will have her work cut out.

This hung together better than the previous books for me, it felt like the police followed the clues, even if the murderer yet again behaved completely stupidly and gave themselves away. I also like that the investigation into the death of DCI Mackie is bringing in more people.

The Millionaire Murders is book five in the Dorset Crime series by Rachel McLean. DCI Lesly Clarke was torn between two cases, a missing journalist, Sadie and the death of a wealthy lawyer and her unidentified companion. To ensure both cases get investigated, she requested more staff and made Dennis the SIO for the double homicide case. Are both cases connected? The readers of The Millionaire Murders will continue to follow DCI Lesly Clarke to discover what happens.

I enjoyed reading the books in this series, and The Millionaire Murders did not disappoint. Rachel McLean's writing style ensures that I cannot put the book down and am excited to read the next book in the series. I do like the way Rachel McLean highlights the problems when a fellow law enforcement officer dies suspiciously. I also enjoy how she highlights mental illness in law enforcement.

I love Rachel McLean's portrayal of her characters and their interaction with each other throughout the book. The Millionaire Murders is well-written and researched by Rachel McLean. I like Rachel McLean's description of the settings of The Millionaire Murders, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

I recommend this book.

DCI Lesley Clarke is beginning to question whether she should stay in Dorset as her temporary posting draws to an end. While she enjoys her work and the team around her, there’s the ghost of her predecessor, DCI Mackie, forcing her to confront some unpleasant possibilities.

Persistent journalist, Sadie Lawes, is also on the trail, searching for the truth about Mackie’s death. When she disappears, events look like they’re taking a sinister turn.

Then there’s a wealthy woman, found dead in her luxury apartment. An unidentified companion is also found dead beside her. With little to go on, the team must dig deep for any leads that could lead them to the motive for the murder and the killer.

I enjoy the way Clarke has to juggle office politics, an investigation into a former officer’s conduct and a murder investigation. With cracks beginning to appear in the team, frustration mounting over Mackie’s life before he died, and a missing journalist that could also be dead, there’s lots of suspense and tension to drive the story along.

Looking forward to seeing how things progress in the next book in the series.

I am enjoying The Dorset Crime series of books, good plots, good locations, good characters and good back stories. I do have some small issues with the characters constantly 'balling their fists' ; 'clenching their hands' and 'digging their fingernails into their palms'. This is very repetitive across several of the characters and mildly annoying. However this is a small niggle and does not stop these books being a very good read.

A wealthy lawyers is found dead in her Sandbanks home with a stranger. So many suspects, her cleaner, tge cleaners boyfriend, the soon to be ex husband and more. The story moves at good pace and it my favourite Rachel Mclean novel to date. 9/10
Another reviewer criticised the book as it is part of a series. I would recommend reading the series in order, to get the full benefit of the book. Ideal for a television series.

another good book in this series

A good stand-alone but even better when read as part of the series. I enjoy the interplay between the different characters.

The Millionaire Murders -

This was the first book I have read in this series and I think it was a first read choice. The story has two investigations, the murder of a rich lady and an unknown man in a posh Sandbanks property and a on the quiet investigation by the new DCI into the suicide/murder of the last DCI. The plot was fast paced, lots of twist and turns and a clear ending to the Sandbank murders. I really liked the short sharp chapters, especially towards the end of the book, which start to highlight the unravelling of the plot. With regards to the DCI story, Lesley is being warned off and there’s a personal involvement that has to be answered. That part is going to be ongoing in the next book.
With regards to the characters, I am not 100% sure what my thought are about Lesley. Do I like her or not? There are some parts of her character and how she re-acted with her team I was not sure about. Also, do I trust all of her team? We’ll see. I will be looking to read the next in the series. Not sure I will be going back to the start of book 1 though. I’ll go for a 5 out of 5.

An anonymous murder victim and a missing journalist: can Lesley uncover the truth?

DCI Lesley Clarke has too many suspects to choose from when a wealthy lawyer and her unidentified companion are found brutally murdered in a Sandbanks mansion.

Was it the victim's ex-husband, resentful at her new lifestyle? Her housekeeper, who found the bodies? Or could it have been a murder-suicide?

Lesley and her team must unravel the evidence and find the real killer, while also investigating the disappearance of local journalist Sadie Dawes. Did Sadie go on planned leave, as her manager insists, or did she get too close to the truth about DCI Mackie's death? Can Lesley's old colleague Zoe Finch find out more?

Overall, a bit disappointing. From the high ratings of Ms. McLean's books, I was hoping for more, and the plot sounded intriguing.
To be fair I understood her books to be more character-driven murder mystery than police procedural and it turns out to be far more a police procedural, which I am not as fond of.
We don't learn much about the characters of the victims or main characters at all. Most annoying, as other people have commented about, it seems to be poorly edited, and the author uses repetitive phrases.
For example, on p.25 we read that "Susannah swallowed" and said...when we know Susannah is the dead wealthy woman and not the housekeeper Ines and is now past the ability to "swallow" then multiple characters seem to "swallow" and then say...whatever they do say.
There is also a lot of "jaw clenching," "gritted teeth," "sniffing" and "cocking of his/her head" whenever thinking before speaking, so the repetition gets a bit tedious.

I broke my fast and decided to read another Dorset Crime novel. This one was better than the last but still suffers from lack of character development. It reads like an episode of NCIS, completely a police procedural, without NCIS' humor. By book 5 in the series, I would like to have a better understanding of the characters. We know Lesley is in a relationship, but we seldom read about her feelings. Dennis is having a mental breakdown but we don't have a clue about why except that it may have to do with his ex-boss who is dead. Tina and Mike are sleeping together but we know virtually nothing about the relationship. All we know about Lesley's lover is that she a hot-shot lawyer who works for the "mob." The mysteries are interesting but the people are basically stick figures walking through the process of investigation.

Another gripping story from the Dorset police force. Two dead bodies found in the bedroom of an expensive house. The cleaner and her boyfriend are questioned, but their alibis are solid. DCI Lesley Clarke and her team continue investigating the deaths, but they have to split into two teams when a missing person case lands on their collective laps. The missing person was a BBC Dorset journalist who was investigating the death of DCI Mackie, Lesley's predecessor. Clarke also has concerns over her new partner, Elsa, a local criminal lawyer. Elsa's firm seems to crop up in connection with virtually every case that Lesly and her officers investigate. Elsa also seems to be keeping secrets from Lesley, which is concerning. The missing person case is shelved, and the double murder case is solved when a link is made between two local firms owned by a married couple.

There's never a quiet moment for DCI Lesley Clarke and her team in Dorset. A womans body is found in her home by her housekeeper plus the body of a man. At first there doesn't seem to be any connection between the two but Lesley is not one to give up and will search for answers for as long as it takes. She is also quietly investigating the death of her predecessor DCI Mackie. His death was ruled to be suicide but Lesley is not convinced. Local journalist was also looking into his death and now she has disappeared. I absolutely love this series and would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

I thought this book in the series is better than some of the previous ones. It was intriguing to see how the murders were eventually solved. There could have been more detail on the solve - why was Bernard at the house? If he had not gone there, they may not have gotten caught at least not immediately - why was his wife going there? What is going on with Dennis? Congrats to Tina! Seriously I saw through Elsa a few books ago. The sapphire ring seemed a bit premature in their relationship - 4-5 months. With both their careers they seem more like ships passing in the night with a glass of wine once in awhile

Another great Dorset Crime Read.

I loved it the plot thickens and with a double murder what isn't helpful is a missing journalist whose after a story that's to close to the DCI's team.

This is another great book in the Dorset Crime Series all been murders so far but there is also the alleged suicide of the previous DCI and this is always in the background nibbling away but the team are working on a double murder in Sandbanks and this has plenty of twist and turns that definitely make this an interesting read.

I love this book and recommend it along with the whole series so far it's been fantastic i can't get enough of it.

3.5*

After reading this I have more questions than answers, which means I’ll be reading the next in the series asap!

I’ve noticed that in every book so far, there have always been two victims. Which makes them a little predictable, they never solve the case until AFTER the second murder, except for this one, which left me wondering if there will be a third victim, but alas, only two.

Good book, good twists. Though I don’t know what Elsa’s deal is, she’s a sneaky one. I want to know what she’s up to, and sharpish!

I really did enjoy this! Shame I haven't read any of the previous instalments, so I did get confused a bit. I really need to start checking books before I buy/read. Maybe I'll buy the rest of the series someday! The characters were all really great. The plot was well thought out. And it made for easy reading.
Feel the the conclusion was pretty rushed out, though, when arresting the culprit. Would have been nice to have a bit more on the arrest/interview. But i feel like it just ended as soon as they were caught. And we don't see much after that.

This is book 5 in the Dorset Crime series.

I am loving this series as we get to learn more and more about Lesley and her team and how they work together.

There is a murder to solve but also unsolved questions regarding the death of the retired Tim Mackie. Are things as they seem? Did he commit suicide? Does Dennis know more than he os letting on.
These books have lots of twists and turns which always keep you guessing.

As good as the previous novels, enjoyed it.

Good to see the characters developing along the story lines. Rich women have been singled out and hired escorts as no ties dates. Then the house is burgled when the escorts have checked for valuables. A new team member is appointed, DC Stanley Brown, although he introduces himself to DCI Clarke as Stanley Green in chapter 40? A typo? Didn't spoil anything though!

Another brilliant Lesley Clarke book!

I love all Rachel McLean books and was thrilled to read this one. It does end on a cliffhanger although the case of the millionaire killings was solved. Lesley is a great ,if unconventional boss and she has an interesting team, with a few secrets themselves. Look forward to reading more about DS Brown, Tina's progress, and what is Elsa hiding? Just so good!

I have been following this series and enjoying it.
This one deals with a wealthy woman killed in her house in Sandbanks but there is also a body of an unknown male in the room.
The team led by DCI Lesley Clarke have a new recruit. The suicide (or was it murder)of Leslie’s predecessor runs through all these books and we learn a little more in this one
I would recommend this as an easy but good read

I absolutely adore this series!! So hard to put down!! My only one tiny little gripe about this one is there is one part where the wrong name is mentioned but it doesn't take away from the story at all! Brilliant writing as always and it took me till right at the very end to figure out who done it!!

Will be starting the final installment that is out tomorrow and then desperately waiting for the next one!!

Another death in Dorset

The title refers to the murder that occurs at the beginning of the book. This is solved through the efforts of the team although the resolution seems to depend on a fair degree of good fortune.

Ticking in the background is the death of DCI MacKie. This is assuming an ever greater part of this series and there are many outstanding items carried over to the next book.
