The darkness is his friend. Wolfe’s trials get harder. A broken leg. A heavy snowfall. Alone in the mountains. The Nightwalker keeps his perspective and his focus. His family is waiting for him. At least the answer of whether they are alive or dead is out there, a long ways away. Wolfe will always have his honor and willingness to help. And that’s how he ended up with the dog, and how he ends up with a young girl, too. Together they continue his journey. As long as it takes, keep putting one foot in front of the other. Through the Red Zone which isn’t so toxic anymore to the Clear Area which is, but in a different way. Join the Nightwalker as he fights to get home.
Frank Roderus wrote his first story—it was a western—when he was five. It was really awful, as might be expected, but his mother kept that typed and spell-checked short story tucked away until the day she died. Later, Frank became a newspaper reporter, thinking that books are written by authors which he most assuredly was not. He kept trying to write though, and eventually did it wrong enough to learn how to get it right. That first sale, a young adult novel published by Independence Press, was more than thirty years and a good many books ago. As a journalist, the Colorado Press Association awarded Frank Roderus their highest award, the Sweepstakes Award, for the best news story of 1980, and the Western Writers of America has twice named Frank recipient of their prestigious Spur Award. Frank passed away at age 73 in December 2015.
Nightwalker 4: A Post-Apocalyptic Western Adventure - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Not your usual combination of genres - a Western in the traditional format, but set in a post-apocalyptic survival scenario with a hint of Westworld, where people have been ripped from their former lifestyles and moral restrictions and pitted against each other, in the battle for survival in a world gone mad.
MC Jim Wolfe, (aka Nightwalker) is like the Man With No Name crossed with Martelle's Terry Henry (TH) Walton, - full of honor and a sense of justice that makes him protect rescue Reba, the damsel in distress. He feels duty-bound to return her to her family if possible, while seeking the truth of whether his own family is alive and waiting for him in the Clear Zone. Wolfe developed new and unusual powers and abilities following the radiation fallout of the nuclear bombs that targeted the Western hemisphere. He prowls the darkness, targeting outlaws and other dangerous predators, though seems to believe that sparing the life of a marauder is the right thing to do - no matter that these may well seek retribution for their grudges against him in the future. A fantastic fourth novel in A Post-Apocalyptic Western series by Frank Rodemus and Craig Martelle, Nightwalker is a 5-star thriller like no other - grab a copy now!
Like the previous novels in this series, this book made me think more of a serial group of stories rather than being called a novel. I was finely able to identify what g had been bothering me enough to keep me from the five star reviews most other books Craig Martelle's name was on. It's kind off like some of the old western like Gunsmoke and others i use to watch growing up. Each episode with a mini conflict that was usually resolved by the end of the show and sometimes something going on in the background that would be brought to a head by the end of the season. Hopefully someday they will all new brought together like a true novel. Until then i will continue on to book 5 then prepare to wait impatiently until Craig is able to finish at least the first arc of the series. I must admit, Craig along with other authors from LMBPN starting with Michael Anderle, have spoiled me as far as waiting for the next addition to a series. Before i had impatiently waited some times years for the next addition to a series from my favorite authors. As a result i tended to wait and read completed series rather than wait, especially out was a new Author,or at least to me.which leads to me begging, please finish book six quickly! I have already picked up book five at the Saturday fan pricing and will be watching impatiently to see how Wolfe and Jennifer do in there travels. So far I've managed to read the rest of the series on the last couple of days. Each book now magnetic than the previous. Love reliving the manners of my childhood being raised in the deep South. I remember the first time a child called me by my first name and it made me very uncomfortable. One of the things i am proud of my own children for is how they have such to the manners they were taught as children. It still makes my heart swell when people complement my children. Even my son who is in the military still maintains the manners he was taught since birth. His girlfriend's are often first attracted to his respect of women that i give his older sisters Credit for pounding in to him from birth. So it's not too see it in this book. I think the lack of these old fashion practices can probably be also blamed on what we are exposed to on a daily basis in the media. While i don't mind reading the irreverent talk in most adult books, they are usually Action based, adults dealing with each other. That is a important thing that i liked about this book. By the time this book takes place, the author Frank Roderus, had developed the world that these books take place in. It has been two years since the world we know has experienced an overnight change. I do think out could still be enriched by more of the geo-political landscape. Hopefully with his own military experience, Mr Martelle can help in that area. I can't help but have questions the troops still fighting over seas. If there's no federal government, what about the leadership of the military? It seems FEDCOM is just a group of former gangs and outlaws. It's hard to believe that even the good people are all made up of groups only concerned about their own groups Care, most of them also seeming only out for themselves and expecting that even when welcoming newcomers they expect then to conform to their beliefs. Where's the diversity this country was built on? Although religion hasn't been a part,it's almost like the different groups are different religions. There is a good start to the characters but it'd be good to add more to their thoughts and memories and experiences. Jennifer mentioned visiting the jail museum on a school trip but later said she had always been home schooled. Would love some of the cracks of missing information are filled in,in future books. Now on to the next book!
Better than the previous book in the series, but not by much. At least in this book Wolfe did not make a series of bad decisions or blunders and the addition of the girl as a traveling companion might just be a good thing.
The United States wears the torn leavings of a nuclear war. Faced against an unholy trinity in Russia, Iran and Korea, the U.S. is now a government of tyrants enforcing their will through the thugs of the Fedcoms. Wolfe made his way through the borderlands between the Clear Areas and the Red Zones, moving at night when his acute night vision allowed him to see through the darkness like it was daylight. He had survived the bombs deep in a cave, eating the contents of his semi trailer of survivalist foods, for two years in the pitch dark. A trickle of water running down a cave wall satisfied his thirst. When he made his way out of the cave, he discovered that his vision was extremely sharp and his strength and speed were amazing. Maybe something in the water?
