A day in the life of a cat - told from the cat's point of view! A funny rhyming picture book from Peter Bently and Chris Chatterton.
I am Cat. Cat is me. A most superior thing to be. I am Cat. I need nap. Window? Cupboard? Dog Bed? Lap!
Join one sassy little cat for a busy day packed full of essential cat activities. From climbing and prowling, to playing and snoozing. Being head of the house is a full-time job!
Peter Bently is married with two children, and lives in south England. He studied languages at Oxford University and has written over 40 titles, one of which led to him being awarded the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2011.
This one seems best suited for 2-4 year olds with its very basic, rhyming text. Illustrations are fantastic and will hold the attention of cat lovers of all ages. I do take exception to the brief scene where Cat goes outside, as indoors is always the best for all (non-feral) cats.
Perhaps four stars are slightly generous, but I would not discourage anyone at least looking at this rhymed picture book showing us the cat's life. All the stereotypes are here, from their choice of sleeping place, to their dislike of us having a lie-in when it's breakfast time, to their faux bravery when they see an intruder – ie, reflection of themself – in a mirror. Some of the word-work to get the rhymes all together are a little forced, but again it's not unpleasant to read, and the target audience should find it all nicely cartoonish and appealing.
This was so cute! I love the illustrations, how colorful they are and how there's lots of little details to see like all the cat-themed items in the house and other critters outside.
This definitely captured that unique cat spirit that's equal parts proud and goofy/playful.
I did think it was a little odd how the adult seemed to always be so shocked or put out by the cat's behavior but then is obviously a cat lover with all the things in the house like photos, slippers, and even a teapot being cat stuff! Although I guess my cats can put me out sometimes despite them being my favorite things on earth.
A delight from start to finish, I Am Cat! is a charming picture book that cat lovers of all ages will appreciate. With playful rhymes and a confident feline narrator, it captures the daily antics and routines of our favorite four-legged tyrants. The onomatopoeia adds energy and humor, making this an ideal read-aloud (especially if you’re performing for someone who also adores cats). The illustrations are rich with visual humor and cozy details—I found myself lingering on each page and even searching online for a teapot like the one featured! Whether you’re reading solo or aloud with a loved one, this one’s a winner.
First sentence: I am Cat. Cat is me. A most superior thing to be. I like stretchy-stretchy paw. I like scratchy-scratchy claws. Cat is hungry. Pad, pad, pad. Human sleeping. That's too bad.
Premise/plot: Cat narrates a lovely rhyming picture book.
My thoughts: I ENJOYED this one oh-so-much. It was a delight. I loved the rhythm and rhyme. I loved the subject! The cat is ADORABLE. The story was amusing. Definitely recommend to cat lovers of all ages.
Cat introduces readers to the activities involved in a typical Cat's day.
Yes, Cat is a typical cat. This covers the basics of food demands, entertainment demands, and how we humans typically imagine a cat thinking about the dog next door, the purpose of humans, etc. It's short and simple but cute, and the illustrations are fun.
“I am Cat. Cat is me. A most superior thing to be.”
A small, black and white kitten goes through its day, eating when it wants (regardless of what the human wants), scratching where it wants, braving the outdoors and potential intruders, even playing with the humans. Life is good. Fun illustrations.
We did smile when we read this book as we have two cats, Harry and Ralph at home and they get in to all sorts of mischief too, well as may daughter says, Harry definitely does! The story was well written and easy to follow. I liked the illustrations too, they made it a fun read. It is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
Recently borrowed from the library and my daughter loved it. I loved reading it. The poetry was so punchy and funny, and yet told a cohesive story throughout the book. A great book for bed time reading
For feline fanciers who don’t mind the humdrum rhymes and wee ones who will like the funny-sounding onomatopoeia and the simple illustrations of cat shenanigans.
If you own a cat or just like cats in general you will find a lot to relate to in this rhyming picture book. So many scenes in it are things that I have experience or heard from others who own a cat.
