The Bureau #4-5

Deuxième affectation

Rate this book

Kim Fielding lives in Oregon and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phone booth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Her superpowers include the ability to write nearly anywhere, often while simultaneously doling out assistance to her family. Her favorite word to describe herself is "eclectic" and she finally got that seventh tattoo.

Chained - 3.5*
The longer novellas mean time to connect. I felt for Edge. It's a good story. Terry had less impact, he was all 80s music references which set the time but didn't show him. Can't picture him fighting monsters of any variety, the dancing made me think him some kind of NHS but no. So the romance didn't convince me, Edge not autonomous enough. Some real life horrors at the periphery. Nice mini update on previous characters.

Convicted - 4*
OK I've been sacked into this series and have purchased the rest, (first two collections currently free). Noticing a formula to the novellas, but that doesn't bother me. I'm a little greedy, with this story there's a showdown then plot part finishes off page - I wanted to see the introductions at least! Then romantic resolve. These would make good full length books.

Loved books 4 and 5 when I read them last year. Brilliant stories, stellar narration by Joel Leslie. More, please!

I won't lie, I skipped a bit and skimmed a bit, but I simply HAD TO come back to this fantastic series and its protagonists :)

Awaiting the promised book 6 Conned I decided it's time to visit with my beloved Terry and Edge, and also Kurt and Des.

This series just keeps getting better! Maybe because the books get longer and longer each time Kim Fielding publishes another one ;)

And while Grimes and Ten from Corruption are, and I'm afraid will always be, my favouritest couple (despite being introduced in barely 40+ pgs), all the next pairings worked great for me <3

Clay and Marek from Clay White were maybe the weakest twosome but I still enjoyed their adventures very much. I especially liked the vulnerabilty of a seemingly invincible and detached vampire ;)

Harry and John from Creature broke my heart a little... The epitome of Frankenstein's monster who was more human(e) than cold-hearted people? Check me in! I loved John so very much...

And here, in this little compilation we have (again) some wonderful MCs:

Terry and Edge from Chained made such an odd couple, joined through bleak circumstances and the goodness of their hearts. Edge especially stole my heart a little... ;)

And finally, Kurt and Des, forty-somethings from Convicted who have been through a lot, have been total opposites (one a Bureau agent and one a con) and still managed to share affection and be loyal to each other...

Anyway, it's been an absolute pleasure to come back to their stories and to make sure that all of them definitely found their HEAs (I simply had to check again, you know?).
Aaaaand... all of this babbling makes me daydream and wish to visit with Grimes and Tenrael, LOL! (Maybe a quick re-read, too?)

So, here are my original reviews of:
- Chained and
- Convicted

Enjoy! The Bureau series is wonderful! <3

Kim Fielding has this thing with writing great emotional supernatural reads and this on was no different. Joel Leslie did an excellent job bring all the characters to life.

This series keeps getting better and better. I warmed almost immediately to the MCs from both stories ... not all of them are paranormal beings but they all come with truck-loads of emotional trauma and wounded psyches. Convicted has a decidedly more philosophical/ethical bent but this adds to rather than detracts from the story-line. Recurring characters from earlier books have little guest-starring moments - which helps keep loyal readers up to date with their favorites. 4.5 stars.

I did not like Chained or Convicted but for different reasons.

** Chained
Chained was a really cool concept and story - I loved Terry’s sunshine personality and the interactions with Edge. The constant music and singing references became a bit tedious though. Music moves the soul but it is not, in and of itself, a character trait. Also taking a pill that would block devil magic to take possession to your soul seems unlikely even in a fantasy world. Like .. if you can’t rely on actual Satan to write a fool-proof contract in this world then I’m not sure how bad the bad guys can really be.

** Convicted
Convicted had too much of a message for my liking. Listen, I just wanted to read a nice book about supernatural creatures and two people falling in love. Instead I got the Vietnam war, divorce, childhood abandonment, sexual identity, HIV/AIDS pandemic, and philosophical debates about the nature of good and evil, and the role that agency and autonomy plays in living a good life. I’m just a simple person: as good as the writing is it was too much for me to keep track of and I would have appreciated just one rather than everything and the kitchen sink.

Fielding really knows how to get to the core of people’s emotions and motivations. But with great power come great responsibility - sometimes covering fewer emotions and motivations is bettter than considering everything. These books were ok, they just felt a bit much overall.

Lovely stories

I’m usually not into paranormal reads except shifters but I’m so glad I found this series. Beautifully written, the plots are engaging and the characters fascinating. All the HEAs are hard earned but that makes them so much sweeter. I’m suspecting the enigmatic Townsend is some kind of Cupid in disguise. He sends his agents on missions where they all end up finding their perfect half. On to the next book.

This review is for me :)

I wish I liked this, but I just couldn't get very far into these. There was on-screen abuse, which really bothered me (I have read dark stories before, so I don't know why this one got to me so bad, but eh, here we are). Also, there were too many references to music and I don't know. I just couldn't get into them.
