Fantastic reporting of the first war in Chechnya, showing the causes, actors, and events, as well as the trauma caused by armed conflicts. Some of the passages are very intense, as the author was present during many of the battles. But besides the reporting, I really appreciated the detailed history of the region, I really did learn a lot. The book closes in a hopeful way, hoping the events would not repeat themselves. But they did. Frighteningly so.
I think this is a good book to see how we ended up where we are today. Very well written too.
