About the author

Maarten ’t Hart made his debut under the name Martin Hart with the novel Stenen voor een ransuil (Stones for a Long-Eared Owl, 1971). He studied biology in Leiden and worked as an ethologist at Leiden University. One of the most important themes in his oeuvre is his childhood in a Calvinist community and his distancing himself from it. His passions for nature and music also constantly crop up in his work. ’t Hart broke through to a wide audience with his melancholy novel about meeting his teenage love: Een vlucht regenwulpen (A Flight of Curlews, 1978). Many novels, short-story and essay collections later, ’t Hart, with his authentic tone and work which often touches upon the tension between biography and fiction, has grown to be one of the most popular and most translated of Dutch authors. In an interview he said: ‘What I like about literature is that one can show a compressed piece of one’s most intimate self.’ Some of his other novels are Het woeden der gehele wereld (The Fury of the Whole World,1993), a Bildungsroman and a thriller in one, De zonnewijzer (The Sundial, 2002), Lotte Weeda (2004) and Het psalmenoproer (Psalms and Riots, 2006), a historical novel.

Wat mij zo bevalt aan Maarten 't Hart is zijn uitgesproken oprechtheid.
Het is een man die onomwonden spreekt over zijn leven.
Het laatste hoofdstuk van dit boek gaat over het geloof dat hem vanaf zijn vroegste jeugd is opgedrongen. Het is schrijnend om met de ogen van een atheïst in 2018 te moeten lezen hoe een intelligente jongeman gebrainwashed door zijn milieu honderden boeken later tot de onvermijdelijke conclusie moest komen dat het hele geloof een sprookje is, waar mensen in mogen geloven als hun dat gelukkig maakt maar waar nuchtere mensen hun eigen mening over mogen hebben. Hoeveel ellende dat hem heeft berokkend en hoeveel angstdromen dat teweeggebracht heeft, laat zich niet echt raden want ook daar is hij open over.

Leuk om M ‘t Hart beter te leren kennen. Weet z’n memoires boeiend te verwoorden. Toch kies ik voor z’n romans.

Autobiografische anekdotes van Maarten 't Hart opgetekend in de eerste helft van de jaren 80.
't Hart schrijft over zijn jeugd, studententijd, kerk en geloof in zijn welbekende onbekommerde stijl.
Het leest prettig weg en af en toe kon ik een glimlach niet onderdrukken.
Het is dubbel zo vermakelijk als je bekend bent met het milieu waarin Maarten 't Hart opgegroeid is.

Stopped reading at page 22. Not an interesting read, Maarten 't Hart appears to be very self-absorbed and his writing style is boring. Content-wise it's not interesting either, often bordering on clichés or caricatures. I skimmed through the rest of the book just to see if I might miss anything by not reading anymore but that doesn't appear to be the case.
