Professional quarterback Austin Riley has always been smitten with his childhood "enemy," Sommer Hayes. Having known each other their entire lives, the majority of their relationship exchanges have been sneers, insults, smirks, and jeers.
Now, ten years have passed since he last stepped foot in his hometown. Austin and Sommer run into each other again only to discover that they both share the same their hatred toward one another was merely a cover-up for the true feelings they'd kept hidden.
They finally have a chance to explore the relationship that could have been, but jealousy corrupts their newfound romance. Austin is forced to face a past that threatens to destroy him, define him, and push away the woman he's been waiting his entire life to love.
This was Austin and Sommer's story. The kids who grew up in a small town together and to everyone who didn't look closely appeared to hate each other. From the time that Austin asked Sommer to play with his race tracks with him and she promptly threw the car across the room as toddlers through the time that in elementary school he threw up chocolate milk and pineapple chunks on her new white shirt to everyone who looked on they appeared to be the ultimate enemies. To their mothers who were best friends and Austin's older sister there was always the hope that they would grow up and find love. Together.
Like most small children their arguments and eye rolls were actually ways to deal with feelings that they had that they either didn't understand or were afraid to acknowledge. So what happens when the small town girl whose family owns and operates the favorite local bakery and the small town guy who has gone on to achieve fame as a well recognized and favorite professional football quarterback finally admit to themselves and each other their true feelings? Well... add in a famous model who has decided that she doesn't want to be the "ex" anymore, the childhood friend to both who is also a pro football player and who has decided that Sommer should NOT be with Austin, a mother who has been diagnosed with cancer and enough twists and turns in the story executed with nail biting accuracy and you have The Game of Love.
Wow. Just WOW! I have to admit that I am stingy with my reviews. I don't give out 5 star reviews often because I just don't feel that the story is amazing often. Do I like stories? Yes. Do I REALLY like stories? YES! If I hand out those five stars then that means that the story changed me. It made me think about myself differently whether good or bad. It has to make me look at something (me, others, life) in a new way. Teach me something new or remind me or reveal to me something that was there all of the time and I may have overlooked or forgotten it. The story has to effect me. This story did that. While the protagonists themselves didn't harp on the differences in their skin tone Ms. K Alex Walker did an EXCELLENT job in reminding us that the world today, unfortunately, still has some people in it that do not necessarily feel the same about "mixing races". When that happens how do you deal with it? Do you deal with it? Do you run? If you do run do you realize the cost that you will have to pay? If you run wha are you running from and to? Do you fight? At the end of the day what's the MOST important thing to you? If you run do you get to keep that?
The characters were real. I found myself cheering on Austin in the way that he dealt with Sommer. There were times in the story where I found myself wanting him to rush in to deal with a situation but after the scenario played out and was explained I saw that rushing in isn't always the best way to handle something. There was a scene where Austin was helping Sommer deal with a situation and the author explained that in certain situations there isn't really anything to say because there is nothing TO say. Sometimes we just have to hold our loved ones and BE THERE. Not talking just THERE! WOW!!
Every character in the story has a purpose. No extra fluff with characters there just to take up space. Everyone has a reason for being in the story and they fit perfectly like the most beautifully executed jigsaw puzzle after you put all of the pieces in their correct places. Also, something important for me, the protagonists CHANGE by the end of the story. No one walks out the same way that they walked in. (How can the author expect me to grow within the story if the characters can't or don't?)
Yup, this was a keeper and a DEFINITE recommend for me. HARD to believe that this is a new author. The writing style, the plot, the ability to pen characters that feel real enough to be people that you both love and hate in real life when you put your book, kindle or e-reader down. All of that and a message that resonates with me when I walk away. Something that echoes for me and with me LONG after the book has put down. Yup. All of that does it for me. All I can say is Ms. Walker PLEASE hurry up and write something else! I only have so many nails to chew down until then.
I really love sports-themed romances because I love football, so I was especially excited to read this one. From almost the beginning, the story fell flat for me. I actually liked Austin, but I could not stand Sommer! From the beginning she did nothing but push Austin away every opportunity she got. She has a man she's been pining over since childhood basically, and when he finally gets the nerve to tell her how he feels, she rejects him because of some ignorant ish his boys did unbeknownst to Austin. Even after they cleared the air and reached a point where they could be honest with one another and professed their true feelings, she still looked for opportunities to push him away. Oh, she's not good enough. His fans and the city of Dallas wouldn't be accepting of their relationship. He only dates model chicks and actresses blah, blah...Exasperating!!!
Also, at one point I felt like I was reading 3 books in one: You had the story of Austin and Sommer, then there was the obsessed friend (if you could call him that)Kyle who secretly wanted Sommer for himself and plotted and schemed to break them up, and then there was the story of Kyle's bigoted, potentially murderous father and how his disappearance from Austin's life could affect his football career and endorsements. All of these circumstances did factor into Austin and Sommer's relationship, but there was just this disconnect for me. I would have liked for Sommer to have been more confident and trusting of her and Austin's feelings for one another.
When I started this book I never expected it to be this good! I am totality surprised. This was a fresh take on the unrequited love I/R book .This book was well written and Austin was good man to fall in love with he was all in from the beginning I liked that . He knew who he wanted and he was a little scared but he went after with both guns blaring liked it. I liked the way he handled the obstacles that came about with him and Sommer and how he supported her when she needed him the most . Yes this is a sappy love story but it's one with substance you won't be disappointed when you read it.
When I 1st saw this book, I was like Yay! my two favorite things, football and romance , it better be good, lol and this book does not disappoint. The story of childhood enemies turned lovers turned soul mates as told by K.Alex Walker was great, written well and was as sweet as southern tea. Austin & Sommer began their "love" affair in their home town of Yearwood, NC, where on the 1st day of elementary school Austin threw up on Sommer and from that moment on it was clear there was something there. The two go thru childhood, adolescence & all the way thru high school hating each other or so it would seem but that is far from the truth. Fast forward 10 years Austin is now a starting Quarterback in the NFL and Sommer is living & working in New York, but a health crisis with her mother brings her back to the small North Carolina town and face to face with Austin who is visiting his mother in the off season. When Austin sees Sommer he is determined to have her and he does. The two decided to have a fling while he is in town, however, fate has other plans for the couple, throw in a crazy abusive friend and an obsessed ex model girlfriend and you have a great story! This was very good book that had my attention form page 1. If you are the market for great romantic story this is the book for you!
Was this book supposed to make me want to choke Sommer the whole time? I did not like her as a girlfriend for Austin. All that running she did? She would have to keep on going. Because it was for dumb reasons. Hardheaded/stubborn to the point of detrimental. She was on the fence a lot for big decisions about her life and that just made her flighty to me. Austin's being cordial to the ex was unnecessary too. No reason for it, especially how she did him wrong. I was expecting Kyle to go fatal attraction, he didn't, not really, that was disappointing. It would have made for a more interesting read.
this book was a great stand alone with love, sorrow, joy, suspense and so much more. this was my first read by k. Alex walker but I Wil be reading more. th author had well developed characters and flow of the story was seamless. even though I'm not guessing about any of the plot or the couple's destiny I want more of them. Great read thumbs up.
This is a beautifully, well written love story. It was a recommendation from a couple of online bookclubs and I can see why so many people loved it.
Sommer Hayes and Austin Riley's story just grabbed me from the first page all the way through the end. I just love stories that have an underlying message, and this was told in such a manner that touches on your emotions.
This author has done a great job and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
Not only was this book a beautiful love story but it also held a message that a lot of people could learn from. Honestly, this book was way better than I expected it to be. I would love to see more from this author because five stars wasn't enough for this book.
This was pretty good. It actually talked about race relations and how it affects people in an interracial relationship. Not sure if the next one will hold my interest, but I will give it a try.
Hamburger this book was amazing! There was not one single part of this book that I didn't like it was a perfect mix of everything that I needed.
Sugar, spice and everything messy lol. To say that this touched subjects that people don't want to discuss is an understatement and I loved the way the author handled the situation regarding racism. It was handled with care and understand which made me fall deeper in love with this book even more.
Austin was everything.. literally everything and then some! Sommer was a very interesting character and I liked her very much, I also like the fact that she was stubborn... sometimes a girl needs a little push but that made the book even more great.
I admit I cry for sommer's mother, going through something very similar it touched home and caused a flooding of tears from understanding the emotions during that time.
I just found out that there was a part 2 so I am off to go read it now because I am still floating on clouds after this one
My Austin would be Danny Amendola and Sommer would have Naya Rivera
Foremost my apology to the author for not getting this review up sooner. I honestly thought I posted since I seen my review for book 2. This is one of those books that you re-read when you are looking for a good story. Even though you already know what happens you re-read anyways that's how good this book is.
It touched on a few subjects, like boy knowing girl for most of his life but too scared to take that step with her. In this case it had a lot to do with his father being a racist. That adds an explosive element to this story incorporating an actual racially motivated death of a young teenage boy. A love triangle, maybe in square if you include ex mutual friend and the ex-girlfriend, both trying to throw shade over Austin's and Sommer's sunshine you have a great read.
I read some of the reviews and some of them were terrible, so I didn't purchase the book, but when I seen a book two out and this one was free I had to read it, and let me tell you, this book is hands down a five, now don't get me wrong, I hate to go racism, but no matter how much I or anyone hates it, how far from any surface is it really...this book if it had any errors I didn't run into not one! I thought it was a great read, highly recommend. Love me some Austin
This book was different for me. However, this was a good read. This book is about a young boy who is now a man and still in love with his young crush. The young girl who is now a woman and afraid to love and live. A friend who wants the young lady and will do anything to make sure the other man doesn't get the woman.
The plot moves all kinds Nguyen very quick. so yo u have to keep up with the story
It's been awhile since I gave a book 5 stars, this book deserves it! This is also the first interracial book that I gave more than 3 stars to.
The books was well written. You could feel the emotions on every page! The characters where were brilliant, I fell in love with Austin. The book had substance and meaning. It made you think, think about reality and what the world was and is. This is book was perfect! Loved it!!! I would certainly recommend this book to my friends!
I have to say, this was such a good book, it made me cry my father always told his girls and boys we should mix with the other race. i understand where the woman coming from when she said that she was scared. books like this that would change your whole way of thinking ,thank you for writing this book anybody mind that was corrupted.
I love love these type of books it makes you make up how the characters look in your head ..glad there was no crazy running around ..this is a great read getting ready to read book 2
I'm always game for a childhood friendship well in Austin and Sommer case not so friendly turn lovers! First read by K Alex Walker, but not my last! enjoy
Austin and Sommer were meant to be. This book is filled with romance and drama. Good book. He also played for my favorite NFL team The Dallas Cowboys!!!!
I really enjoyed this read, but my god it was one of them emotional roller-coaster ride. I was glad that Austin and Sommer was able to make through the drama they called life.
This is an older book, 10 years. I hope the author got better because some of this was good and most of it was bad because it was all over the place and never focused itself. The author threw everything in the book and never satisfactorily detailed the multiple storylines. The FMC, Summer, was unbelievably annoying. She created drama where there didn't have to be any. Her constant wavering, acting as if she were still in high school, living with Kyle who was clearly into her and pretending not to notice, pushing the MC away every chance she got. Then the MC, speaking nicely to his ex after she dropped him like dirty trash. To match that absurdity FMC spoke to Kyle, the guy who blew-up their lives because he wanted to destroy them if he couldn't have her, kindly and not telling him where to go. And for his part saying something to the effect I saw your interview and even though I was obsessed I see that your truly in love, so I'll leave you alone. I don't think that's how obsessive stalking works. This book needed a good editor because the author had good stories but just too many all-in-one book and they weren't fleshed out properly.
The narrator was distracting. She didn't know how to make her voice distinctive enough to tell one character from the other. This book was just a jumble. I hope the author got a good editor and got better at pairing down her stories and focusing on the most important elements. I'll probably never read her again but never say never.
Austin and Sommer has always love one another, but hid it about hate for one another. Austin is the start football player, while Sommer goes back home to help her mom who has cancer. Austin finally goes back to his hometown where he meets Sommer again, and wants a relationship with her. Even though he only on a 6 weeks leave from his football games. But Kyle is trying to get into his way since he is also deeply in love with Sommer and wants to be with her.
Kyle is a jerk, he really wants to be with Sommer but she wants to be with Kyle. She and Kyle has had feeling for one another since middle school. But Kyle doesn't understands that and wants Sommer no matter what.
I really don't like Kyle and even though I try to understand from his point of view it's really hard. I Love that Austin is determine to have Sommers on the other hand. Even though a lot of bad things keeps happening he's not going to let that stop him from keeping them together.
I love this because its like a fairy tale where the prince is there to slay the princess dragons. Kyle is there to push Sommers farther. As well as be by her side and love her, and don't ask for anything else back but love him as well.
This is a cute story that I would recommend anyone who wants a love story to read.
WOW this is a amazing story! One that you will definitely enjoy. There is so much excitement with these awesome characters, they have such great chemistry. It's full of conversed, thrilling and very passionate with parts that will bring tears to your eyes along with their drama element, but there is a part that's sad and it's the one thing that brought tears to my eyes I had to make myself finish that chapter but the most of what I enjoyed is the time spent with the couple their relationship is so beautiful and enjoyable ⭐I totally devoured this story and when I finished reading the last page, I still wanted more! I was so absorbed into how their relationship development, it wasn't a rushed tight story line either. The story just flows so smoothly one page into the next page. There are sad parts in the story and their attraction is off-the-charts! Plus this is one of an all around great story that I have enjoyed. I really enjoyed their journey. 💃Overall this is a five star which l greatly enjoyed the story.
I’m sort of between a 3.5 and 4 star for this book. I am a big fan of K Alex Walkers books, I’ve loved all of the ones I’ve read so far. Her ability to write female characters with a brain and backbone is refreshing, I also appreciate her making her characters have great communication and finally no third act breakup.
I did enjoy this book, but I feel like a lot of it was tell and not show. Plus there’s A LOT of drama and it got to the point where I was overwhelmed with everything going on. Like this book has it all childhood crushes turned to love, what starts out as a long distance relationship, surprise pregnancy, a mother dying of cancer, a guy who was never told no who felt entitled to Sommer’s p***y, a racist father who killed a little black boy in the 50’s, a jealous ex, the list goes on.
After seeing a few spoilers for the plot of book 2 it might be a long while till I read that bc I can’t deal with more Tom foolery ✌🏻
3.75 stars sports, interracial, enemies to lovers romance. Austin and Sommer's story. premise: two people who grew up hating each other reconnect after many years and become lovers. Austin is a QB in the NFL. Sommer just moved back home to take care of her mother and help out in her bakery. Sommer and Austin reportedly hated each other in high school but really they secretly crushed in each other.
this felt like two books in one. the first part of the book focuses on the enemies to lovers theme. the second part of the book focuses on the interracial aspect. in the first part of the book, we don't get any descriptions about the characters. we don't know race, hair color, hair style, anything. then in the second part of the book, the race of the main characters is the primary focus. the book went from navigating a relationship with former enemy to whether the MMC is a racist. wish the author would've integrated the parts of the books better.
