W. L. Hawkin writes myth, magic, and mayhem designed to inspire and entertain. Described as “intoxicating, lush, magically-edgy, page-turners,” her Hollystone Mysteries series features a coven of witches who solve murders using their wits and ritual magic with a little help from the gods. She loves myth and magic, so when she’s not writing, she’s studying Druidry, shamanism, and mediumship. She defies genre by writing character-driven fast-paced mysteries and thrillers that involve fantastical characters. See her four book series: To Charm a Killer, To Sleep with Stones, To Render a Raven, and To Kill a King.

Her latest book, Lure, is set on a Chippewa Reservation in the American Midwest and tells the story of Jesse & Hawk.

Lure started off with our main character, Jesse, out in the woods, taking pictures of animals, as she does for her job as a photographer. When she is about to take a picture of a beautiful young deer, the most unexpected thing happens right before her eyes! Stunned and quite literally tripping over herself by the surprise of what she was seeing…

When I started this book, (and going in totally blind in regards to the “about the book” section) I thought Hawk was going to be an alien, supernatural… something, but he was simply… human. A very intriguing human, and even though the initial meeting was wrought with tension and accusations, Jesse and Hawk seemed drawn to one another even while they were passionately glaring at one another from across the forest.

This book takes you on a journey near the Chippewa reservation in Lure River, Minnesota. This town is small, super small. Everybody in the area knows everyone else and they also know their business. Jesse is there to work, take pictures, and be close to her friend Rainy.

The story behind the mystery man-hunter is shared to our MC by Rainy and we get to see and understand his the tragic past. Jesse has her own tragic story and one of the reasons she is in this cabin in the woods, is due to her past. Jesse can relate to Hawk’s pain and feels this may be why she feels this connection with this stranger.

There are different points of view in the book once you read more into the story we are taken into the past for a few chapters to get an understanding of the other characters point of view as well. We, as readers think one thing about these characters and then by the end of the book, we will be surprised that what “happened” didn’t happen the way the reader thought.

This story is short, the overall flow of the book was smooth and did not take me out of the book while reading and at one point in the story, I was so wrapped up in this story and what happened next that I didn’t want to put it down.

There were laugh out loud funny parts, angst, and even some parts that really made me want to throw the book in a fire. It got to be frustrating in certain parts and the banter back and forth between Jesse and Hawk was so hot and cold, I wasn’t sure if I was intrigued or irritated. Many scenes and situations in this book will have readers really invested in the story of Lure River and the drama that unfolds inside of the town.

Other than the ending, that felt rushed and could have been clearer, I enjoyed the story of Jesse and Hawk. It was intriguing, with its Native spirits woven in and being respectful of Native culture. The world building wasn’t as strong as in fantasy books, I could have still pictured myself in the book with the characters, which I appreciated. The writer did her research, and when I looked it up, I found out that she actually studied Native American Culture, so there is some solid content in this book, and if you are into the paranormal, ghosts, hauntings, mystery, and Native culture, this book is definitely for you. Plus, it has a nice cover. I’d pick it up and see what the book was about if I saw it on a shelf in a bookstore. I hope to read more from this author in the future.

Book score: 8.0/10

This isn’t an ordinary light-hearted romance—it’s a beautifully written love story, a haunting mystery, and a glimpse at Native American mysticism and life. Like a sun-dappled forest path, there is darkness and light.

After suffering a terrible tragedy, wildlife photographer and journalist Jesse moves to a remote cabin near the Midwestern town of Lure River, simply called Lure by the locals. Lure is “a fertile town of trees, lakes, and contradictions.” A Chippewa reservation sits on the opposite side of the river, where Jesse’s cabin is located. A wild man named Hawk also lives on the reservation.

Jesse and Hawk cross paths in a horrible Meet Ugly. They are total opposites, but you know what they say about opposites. After the meeting, they can’t stop thinking about each other—even if sometimes the thoughts are mixed. Although Jesse and Hawk are clearly opposites, they are both haunted by tragedy and have turned to nature to heal. They have more in common than they realize.

Hawk seems like a handsome, monosyllabic mountain man, but he’s more complicated than that with a surprising, tragic backstory. He has an interesting philosophy rooted in the teachings of his Native American mentor and feels very much a part of nature. He believes deer have spirits, but so do strawberries. As a white person, I found these concepts odd, but some of this is explained in the Acknowledgements section of the book—which is well worth reading! Jesse observes that Hawk talks as if he’s from the seventeenth century. Although he has clear “alpha male” qualities, I haven’t encountered a romantic hero quite like him before.

Poor Jesse can’t catch a break. Not only is she under the spell of a man she’s not entirely sure she likes, when her friends loan her a horse, she makes a terrible discovery in the old barn behind her cabin. An entrancing mystery ensues, and Hawkin weaves the twin narratives of the mystery and the romance beautifully.

Although this murder mystery is not graphic, the dressing of animals killed for food is grisly and realistic. So are the consequences of steel traps, which Hawk finds barbaric.

The big twist in the murder case surprised me. It’s not the first time a Hawkin mystery has caught me off guard! I should know by now to expect the unexpected.

It’s a gripping read that had me turning pages all night!

The Review

This was the absolute best combination of romance and suspense. The wildness of the two protagonists' tense and heated romance mirrored the equally wild landscape they found themselves in. The complex backstories that have brought each of them to the emotional place they meet each other in will captivate readers and bring the wellspring of tears that these emotional romances often have.

The rich mystery and suspense surrounding the thriller aspect of this narrative were so engaging to read. The striking backstory of this small town and the tragedy that has been kept in the shadows for two decades highlights the small-town atmosphere that keeps these mysteries lasting as long as they often do, both in fiction and reality itself. The back and forth look into who is responsible for the missing young woman and the complex relationship between the town and the indigenous people who have been so badly affected by this senseless death will have readers glued to the pages as each chapter unravels the intricacies of this mystery.

The Verdict

Haunting, thoughtful, and passionate, author W.L. Hawkin’s “Lure: Jesse & Hawk” is a must-read romantic thriller of 2022! A truly entertaining and captivating story of love lost, love found, and the lengths we are willing to go to in order to keep the past hidden, the author did an incredible job of finding a harmonious chord between the narrative and dynamic character development that cannot be matched.

Wonderful Story

This story has so much to offer - romance, adventure, mystery, heartbreak... There were twists and turns I didn't see coming. It was a charming romance with an emotional mystery mixed in.

What I liked were the characters, especially Jesse & Jed/Hawk. I loved their passion - for the earth, life, culture... I loved the connection they shared and the understanding they had for one another.

I loved the respect for the Native American culture in this story, and how Jed's family loved him unconditionally. The mysticism was accurate and made the tale more authentic. How this impacted and influenced Jed/Hawk helped to define the man, but it was also a big reason I liked his character so much. His relationship with Joe and his parent's unconditional love/acceptance was very moving.

What I disliked was Sheriff Flanagan and the relationships he had. Sam's life was a sad contrast to Jed/Hawk's. Ira would fall in this area... and I'm still left feel uncertain about the man overall.

I definitely recommend this book. It has a lot to offer... it's well paced, interesting, good characters, unique character stories... very good read.

Nature photographer Jesse is still grieving the loss of her fiancé Alec. Desperately in need of a change of scenery, she rents a cabin on a reservation in the American Midwest, near her friend Rainy’s home. Jesse soon comes across a man named Jed (aka Hawk), who’s also removed himself from society after his own losses. It’s not a pleasant encounter, but as the two become drawn to one another, they find themselves struggling to survive both animal and human predators.

This is a haunting love story about physical and emotional survival and coming to terms with the past. Jesse and Jed are well-rounded characters who go through a wide range of emotions and growth in the story. One of the subplots focuses on the real-life tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The settings, action, and inner monologues are so beautifully described that I felt I was reading an exquisite literary novel as much as a romantic suspense story. This novel has it all. Compelling, heartbreaking storylines, action, crime and suspense, and romance. I also loved the satisfying ending. Highly recommended.

Lure: Jesse & Hawk by W. L. Hawkin is a nuanced romance with wonderfully wrought characters and a twisty plot. Hawk is a doctor who has his own issues. He meets Jesse, a vegan photographer on the Chippewa reservation in Minnesota. Hawk shoots the deer that Jesse is photographing and tension ensues between the two.

When Jesse learns that Hawk's friend is in a critical situation, she sets out to inform him. They become linked to each other and can they walk past their differences and the challenges that follow and build love?

There are so many strong plot points and the author writes a setting that is vividly drawn, capturing the cultural elements of the small Midwestern town of Lure River. Readers will want to follow the pulse as Hawk looks for Jesse when he discovers she is in danger. She has made a disturbing discovery of crime and the bad guys are after her. Lure: Jesse & Hawk is a strong read that kept me hooked from the very start of the story to the end. The unique storytelling, the plot with its different archs left me breathless, and the romance is intriguing.

Lure: Jesse & Hawk by W. L. Hawkin is an impressive romantic suspense novel. I love a good read that entices my attention with danger, suspense, and a good mystery. This book has it all. The pages fly by super-fast. There is enough action, and the characters keep building up my intrigue. The romance is so good! It reminds me of the hot steamy romance that Samantha Chase creates. The suspenseful dark mystery side is like that of Heather Graham, Sandra Brown, and Delores Fossen's books. W. L. Hawkin writes in a way that excites and hooks readers like me. The further I get into the plot the more I wanted the books to never end. Need an adventure to take the boredom of winter away, this is the book to read. A little of everything all in one fabulous novel. Jesse is my new favorite heroine. I love the tensions between her and Hawk. Absolutely, amazing!

This book is a Native American, Chippewa story of a missing young girl and the people surrounding the mystery, as it comes to light after many years what happened to her. Jesse is living in a remote cabin to have time to herself, after a personal tragedy. Hawk is living in a cave, living off the land, in the same area. When they meet, sparks fly, and the adventure begins. They are right in the midst of the mystery. It's an involved story, very intriguing and quite compelling. I read it straight through, and couldn't put it down.

W.L. Hawkin’s LURE ~ Jesse & Hawk was a fantastic summer read! Hawkin created an engaging story filled with interesting, complex characters and a vivid world that invites you in. On the surface her two main characters appear diametrically opposed, but through the course of events we come to a deeper understanding that things are seldom black and white and these characters have much more in common than not. An important message in an increasingly divided world.

Emotional, with magical ties to Native American beliefs and lifestyle with a haunting mystery that’s difficult to read but difficult to put down. Jesse, a photographer having a tough time tangles with Hawk, a man who has retreated into the way of the Chippewa work together as an unlikely romance ensues. Gripping, not to be forgotten.
I received this book from Hidden Gems as an arc and I am voluntarily submitting my review.

This writer sure knows how to enchant a reader! Like the Hollystone Mysteries, W L Hawkin creates plausible, genuine, ordinary characters who live extraordinary lives. Jessie and Hawk form an incredible connection that engages the reader. My only complaint is that the story ended too soon! I can’t wait for the next novel.

They are both going to try to find themselves in the same place. She will become cross when he shoots the deer she is taking a picture of. Their lives will get more complicated when a body is found in her shed. His friend is dying and she needs to find him. Will she find him? Can he keep her safe? See how it will go

This was a very good read. It was a romantic suspense story. Even though the story mainly takes place on Native American lands, the two main characters are not Native American. However, their friends and neighbors are. So, not only is it a good read, but it is also, educational.

WL Hawkin's Lure is a romantic adventure full of sensuality and suspense set in a small Midwestern town. The characters really stand out, and are brought together by a murder mystery subplot; and a great cast of supporting characters as well, such as Jesse's friend Rainy.

The lead characters Jess and Hawk, have a fun, tongue and cheek, love/hate relationship with Jess being vegan and Hawk a hunter, while they are both dealing with their own past histories––Jesse with a deceased partner and Hawk losing his partner to childbirth and also having to give up his son. I found myself continued to be drawn in as Jesse and Hawk come together more with the mystery surrounding the remains of a Native girl whose bones Jesse discovers in her shed; and unsuspecting twists and turns in their growing relationship, coupled with beautiful imagery. The ending as well had an unexpected element, which kept things suspenseful until the end. It left me wanting to know about the characters after the story finished; and I really look forward to more books in this series.
