DCO’s latest patch has finally made it possible for dungeons to interact with one another. This can mean only one it is time for some player vs player action. More importantly, it means James and BLANK will finally be able to settle their score on the Fields of Battle. Only, there’s a lot more riding on this than pride – if James loses, he will be forced to leave DCO for good.
With everything on the line James and Rue must prepare for the onslaught and grow their dungeon as fast as possible. Which may mean doing things James isn’t proud of, things that involve a lot of dickens…
BLANK may be formidable, but the Random dungeon still has a few tricks up its sleeve. James has unlocked an entire new floor, and with it, the most powerful and terrifying Random mobs yet.
Well… hopefully; it is Random after all.
But seriously - how bad could it be?
This is the revised, edited and novelized retelling of the popular Royal Road web serial Dungeon Core Online by Glyax.
Jonathan’s journey through life has been anything but slow. Being part of a military family, he moved across the world growing up, and having not learned his lesson, joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. This sent him on a whirlwind adventure, which even found him in the sands of Afghanistan. During all his travels, he found one thing always remained constant…he loved to read. Now, married and with life finally calming down a bit, he has begun to push his passion for literature even higher, aiming to give readers the kinds of books he has come to love with his own unique twist.
He has grown up in thousands of worlds, courtesy of not only literature and anime, but also his avid gaming life! Jonathan has spent countless hours on video games ranging from Final Fantasy to Pokémon to Guild Wars and WoW, while also enjoying tabletops such as D&D and Exalted.
Living in a game world isn’t enough for Jonathan though, and he has pushed to turn his own life into a classic RPG. On top of leveling up his writing and music abilities (he swears he is not a bard though!), he is currently learning the ancient art of blacksmithing, which places him at his forge working hot metal into blades on the weekends!
This book reinforces the worst part of this series.
The main character is useless.
SPOILERS
The dungeon war seems completely contrived, because it is. Rue makes all the decisions. All the quirks that allow for the end are thrown in for plot armor. The ending where BLANK admits to being in on everything and setting up their father invalidates the entire book.
Book 2 picks up right were book 1 left off, with PvP about to be introduced and James scrambling to prepare. The dungeon war takes up the entirety of this installment, which is exhausting as someone who hates PvP. Some of the players on the enemy side seem fun but others are the typical PvP meanypants types. The real world bullying is resolved but the virtual world bullying gets more unhinged.
We meet more players on both sides of the conflict as James observes their experiences during the war. A lot of different gamer types and personalities are represented, plus we get to see more character build options. By the time the epic battles start, there is a rich cast for which to root.
If you can, try not to look to closely at the cover art before reading. It spoils one of the enemy monsters. The cover art warning continues going forward - if you want to be surprised with what James has to work with, avoid the cover art until later.
Fantastic writing, funny, dramatic, puns and pop culture references. I really liked it. I will be buying the third one and the audiobook as well. If you buy the ebook, the audiobook is much cheaper. The guy who reads it does a fantastic job and it has been really fun to listen to while I do my chores and drive. This is a long book, and as a fast reader I really appreciate that.
Has a lot of the same problems as book 1 but I found I cared less about its flaws and more about its good parts. Solidly entertaining - I feel like the quality has improved. Lots of cheesy parts gave a campy feel. puns and bad comebacks and wild events - nothing laugh out loud funny but everything is entertaining. Dungeon wars are fun even if the ending pushed for a plot twist rather than a satisfying conclusion.
If you've read and liked book one I definitely recommend you check out book 2.
Hey here's another absolutely awesome book cranked out by an author writing and posting on the Royal Road and so far I haven't been let down by any of these authors! As with the first book, bk2 is one of my favorites and again I purchased a copy for my daughter! Still trying to get my girl into litRPG, 😄! If Jonathan Smidt doesn't do it nothing will! With limited time James our MC has his back against the wall he has to build the third floor of his dungeon and be pitted against another dungeon called Blank! It's player vs player this time! Dungeon Core Online is also chock full of pop-cultural references, such as Monty Python, Dr Who and some anime to mention a few, and there's plenty of action too... just the way I like it!!! It's Perfect! As for Travis Baldree? Well, he's Travis Baldree stealing my heart yet again and delivering another Stellar performance!!!
I read both of these back to back so they get the same review. I'm not a fan of dungeon core books but I enjoyed both of these immensely. The random nature of the dungeon gives it a great shake up each level and is something different to offer in terms of strategy and mob design. The overall narrative does take a little bit to get to, mostly in book two and more towards the end. But it's not a huge deal imo. There are tons and tons of pop culture references that are both hilarious and unimaginative, I enjoyed every one. Overall, they're worth a read/listen if you want to try out Dungeon Core for the first time.
Been reading a lot of RPGLit, this is top of the heap
This series is plain old excellent. Can't wait for the next installment. However until that comes out I plan to check out his other work. Smidt manages to blend action, humor, drama, and the beginnings of a love story in a seamless fashion. The story makes creative use of the mobs summoned for the lead character's dungeon, and reminds me of playing old school pen and paper D&D. Looking forward to expanding my library with his works.
I tried to read this book in one go but life kept interrupting. I did read it as fast as I could because I wanted to see how the main fight panned out. The main character is mature for a 16 year old but still a kid. It’s fun and while not light hearted because he’s invested, it’s an irreverent read with a ton of pop culture references from the 80s on.
This story covers the dungeon war between the random dungeon and the candy dungeon. It is broken up between dungeon dives and an all out war on field between the two dungeons and their cities.
It would have been fun to explore the candy dungeon a bit more, but seeing the different mobs and tactics was amazing. So many crazy ways of using things that I never would have thought of, and this is what makes DCO so much fun to read!
If you liked the first volume, this second installment in the series should really please you. After introducing another humorous dungeon level, (stuffed animals?!) Smidt ups the ante by introducing dungeon wars with PvP. This makes the action come alive. A step up from the first book and quite interesting to read.
This book had me by the edge. Like seriously everything was so well done, the fights were epic, so much creativity in how the war was fought and above all a kick ass conclusion to book 2. I look forward to book 3.
Also James was a badass in book 2. Sure he had his slip ups and all but still a very nice book
This book is everything one could expect of a Dungeon Core genre novel. The craziness begun in the previous novel escalates in this one until reaching an expected climax and a rather surprising denouement.
This book, and its predecessor, may be of interest to fans of the broader Fantasy genre and to those who enjoy playing RPGs.
Dungeon Core Online book two continues to build an intriguing and entertaining world while still managing to pull surprises even as it indulges the most enjoyable tropes of the genre. I can't wait to read the next one.
Wow. Every page was full of awesome. This book, like the first sings to my soul and tickles my inner child. Love all the callbacks and homage to pop culture. And oh the puns. Can't wait for the next book!
Fast paced page turner with interesting characters that you can instantly root for. Definitely an interesting plot twist at the end. Can't wait to find out what happens next
This story of a young man who gets to be the online dungeon core of his city is Fantastic. Unfortunately one of the developers hates his parents and makes his life more difficult. His choice of random floors has him making lemonade out of horrible lemons.
I do really like the story. Very likable and interesting characters too. But sometimes the writing got in the way for me. Just needs a good editor to clean it up.
Some parts felt a smidge rushed but it was another rousing and amusing story. With another 3 to 4 books to go I'm stoked to find out what else is unlocked and how the floors and mobs are used.
Epic, massive battles, crazy dungeons, lots of humor, definantly need to see some more toilet mimic action! Looking forward to some more dungeon fairy romance
