I love the book cover and it, along with the title, had a part in convincing me to request this book. And I am glad that I did. This is a small-town romance series with small groups of friends, women and men. I haven't read the others but had no problem with reading this one. Tess is a widow, who inherited her aunt's bookstore after she decided to retire. Having lost her husband three years ago, Tess loves her store, her private book club of friends, and a book with a happy ending. When her husband's former best friend stumbled into the store injured from a camping incident, she is not too happy but as she gets to know River, she decides he's not so bad. River served in the Marines with her husband and now works as a PI. It is fun to watch the two develop a friendly relationship and then on to more, but the path is littered with some rocky places. This is an emotionally packed story that hits all the emotions. I think those who love romances will enjoy this one.

Secrets are not so easy to hide, what happens if it all comes out? THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP is all about River Harrison showing up at a bookshop, and Tess Lane is furious. Tess is a young widow who owns the bookstore. River is a former Marine, Jared’s ex-best friend, and now a private investigator. Tess hates River, he tried to ruin her wedding, but she can’t helping thinking with him showing up, it is her chance to uncover the truth of Jared’s mysterious death. He died in a town he didn’t belong in. He had no reason to be there and that has always bothered Tess.

I really enjoyed the small town setting and the romance between Tess and River. There is a great set of characters and I can’t wait to read more about the secondary characters as well. I think the pacing in the book is great and gave a good foundation for the next book in the series. I had a great time reading THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP. Annie Rains pulled me right in and hooked me from the very first page. She is now an auto buy author for me. Her characters feel very real. They aren’t perfect and while they all have flaws they are also very lovable. I now know I will devour everything this awesome author writes and do it all easily with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP is the third in the series, but can be read as a standalone and with a fourth book already published!

THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP is a sweet novel about letting go of the past and making amends. Of rediscovering what its like to be in love again, friendships and of coming to terms with loss. In a week where I have started four or five books and given each up at between 30% and 50% I read THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP straight through because the story is an easy read with engaging characters, a fun plot, and a believable storyline. I look forward to reading more from Somerset Lake. Annie Rains writes snappy dialogue, fantastic female friendships, and laugh out loud moments to give the story the perfect balance of humor and “will somebody pass the dang tissues?! Tess deals with some heavy situations, and several shocking revelations change everything for her. Hang on to your seats, trust me!! THE TRUE LOVE BOOKSHOP is not my first book by Annie Rains and it won’t be my last!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Forever. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Blog Review Here https://veganbookblogger.wordpress.co...
This is so heartwarming, it's her absolute best book ever!
Her books are so realistic, you could see you friends and neighbors in these situations.
I love that this is a series and we get to meet characters from previous books again and also meet a new cast of characters.
I must say I was glad to see Somerset Lake's gossip blogger,Reva back at it again. She knows everybody's business and you wouldn't want her for a neighbor but she has a fun and outgoing personality and she won't hesitate to tell you what you need to know about someone.
The book is so emotional, it may bring you to tears and you'll find yourself in a range of emotions as you read this.
Tess Lane owns Lakeside Books, it's her calm space to go to after the death of her husband,Jared that occurred three years ago. She had so many dreams of how life would be for them but it was all snatched away by a car accident.
River was her husband's best friend before their wedding until he objected to their wedding, now she and his family don't like him because of the objection.
When he shows up on her doorstep questions rush in.
As she starts spending more time with River she sees he's not the bad guy she thought he was, this former Marine has changed and has her best welfare at heart.
He's a PI now and the more he uncovers about her husband the more she feels as though her life is crumbling all over again.
Will a journey of self-worth and self-discovery for River and Tess both set them on a path of despair or easing of pain and knowing forgiveness is the way to reopen the heart again?
Family is not always blood but who you make it when you let others into your heart.
Loved this book and look forward to many more by this author!

One Liner: Nice

Tess Lane is the owner of Lakeside Books and loves the place with all her heart. What she loves even more is the weekly book club with her dear friends. Being widowed three years ago has left her feelings raw, but Tess does her best to get on with her life. She still wonders about the missing pieces of her husband Jared’s death.

River Harrison shows up at the bookshop, and Tess is enraged. He’s a former Marine, a private investigator, and Jared's ex-best friend. Tess hates River, but she wonders if his unexpected appearance is her chance to uncover the truth of Jared’s mysterious death.

Tess realizes how much she can enjoy her life when she begins to follow a trail with River. But the secrets come out and put Tess in a vulnerable position. Can she handle the truth and move over the past? Can she find hope to love again and lead a happy life?

The story comes in the third person POV.

My Observations:

The writing is easy to read and adds a good pace. I could finish 350+ pages in a couple of days (a total of 2.5 hours). Such books always get brownie points.

This is a series with standalone books (each book for each character). We don’t have to know their stories to read the book. There’s enough info to keep the book going.

The small-town setting and its warmth reflect throughout the book. Tess is a bookshop owner, and we also have a plan for a book signing event.

The story is pretty light and easy despite the heavy topics. Things happen conveniently. Even major emotional issues are resolved with a page or two. I don’t mind that much if it is consistent.

That’s where the ending didn’t fully work for me. It contradicts the easy resolution in the previous chapters. While it is still HEA, it feels as if the author wanted to cater to multiple target audiences at the same time.

The events either have to be realistic or convenient. A combination of both will create a sense of dissatisfaction, especially if the reader is rooting for the male lead.

To sum up, The True Love Bookshop is a nice and lighthearted read with some sweet characters.

Thank you, NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing), for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

The True Love Bookshop is the third novel in the Somerset Lake romance series. As with most books in this genre you can read the series out of order, but characters from previous novels make appearances in this one so if you don't want to be spoiled, start at the beginning. I've really enjoyed reading about the people of Somerset Lake and this book featured my favorite characters. Loved their chemistry and the bookshop setting was an added bonus for this avid reader.

Three years ago, bookshop owner Tess Lane lost her husband, Jared. River Harrison, former Marine now private investigator was his best friend until they had a falling out. River is living in Somerset Lake and that doesn't make Tess very happy. However, she might need his help as she seeks out answers about what was going on in Jared's life before his death.

Friendships are a big part of this series and the support system the women have with their book club and the men at their bar hangout is nice to see. I think that's why I like this series so much because you have a good group of likeable characters. When life is crazy, I like picking up this type of book because it has a calming effect on me. Comfort reading for sure.

Definitely recommend this author if you enjoy Hallmark-esque type romances.

Thank you to Forever for providing me with an advance copy! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion.

If I could describe this book in one word it would be charming.

I love a small town setting! Bonus points for an enemies to lovers trope :)

I ADORED River!! Ahhh! What a character! The chemistry between River and Tess was so sweet. The two of them together was magic.

The True Love Bookshop isn't just a romance book, it also serves us with some detective work and a whole lot of mystery!

Plus, who doesn't love a book club!? Especially one that only spends a few minutes actually discussing the book and the remainder contemplating life. Full disclosure, this is EXACTLY what my physical book club is all about. The best!

Such a wonderful cast of characters. I definitely need to grab myself the first two books and read them.

Huge thanks to Forever Pub for this gifted copy!

I love books about books with a little bit of romance in the mix. This was such a fun read and a sad read at the same time. My heart broke for Tess but I was happy to read the ending.
River was so dreamy he was a hit in my book.
This is a must read and I recommend this book.

This is a fun romance with great characters. Tess is a young widow who is running a bookstore. Her favorite part is her book club. River was her husband's best friend, and when he appears in her bookshop it brings back all the questions surrounding her husband's death three years ago.

I enjoyed the banter between River and Tess as well as Tess's friendship with her book club members. I also enjoyed the plot. This would be a great beach read. The romance is rocky and develops well. It's a sweet book.

In this romance by Annie Rains, Tess is a bookstore owner - now isn’t that the dream?!? But Tess doesn’t have the perfect life she always imagined. She is a widow navigating a world of grief, when suddenly her husband’s former best friend River reappears in her life. As parts of her past are revisited, suddenly she has more questions than answers. And while she had always loved to hate River, perhaps she was confusing those emotions…

This is a feel good story with a predictable but heartwarming romance. The romance develops naturally, but the storylines with the side characters are a bit anticlimactic. The heart of this story truly lies in the theme of chosen family - it can be messy and complicated, but “life tends to be that way”. The book also expertly navigates Tess’ relationship with grief and features strong female friendships. This is the third in the series, but can be read as a standalone - with a fourth book in the works!

Reasons this book drove me insane:

1) the way Tess was supposed to be biracial but besides once off-handedly mentioning her mother was black and her aunt was a minority business owner it was never brought up again except for random stilted descriptions of her hair care routine. This was a blatant case of white author checking diversity boxes and it backfired immensely

2) starting the book with a dog as a focal point and then pretty much ignoring the dog the rest of the book except for again, random insertions. I’ve read hundreds of excellent books with dogs and they can be entire characters that add a richness to the story

3) so many cases of it seeming like the author forgot what had already been written so there were either repetitions or discrepancies that jumped out

I only finished reading this so I could write a “DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME” review 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for providing me with a copy of this book!

I’ll start by saying that I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but I definitely need to now! I gad no problem following along with the story and the author did an amazing job of writing the novel so it could be understood on its own.

Some themes found in this book:
• small-town romance
• self-identity
• complicated family issues
• friendships and found family
• enemies -> friends -> lovers
• cozy, emotional, and did I mention there’s a super cute dog!?

I absolutely adored Tess and River and loved following along on their adventures. I loved the atmosphere of the small town and the characters that live there. I can’t wait to backtrack and dive into the other two books!

Tess Lane is a widowed bookshop owner struggling to move on after the loss of her husband. When her husband’s ex-best friend shows up at her shop injured, Tess does what any decent person would do. She calls an ambulance and helps him. However, she hasn’t forgiven him for ruining her wedding years ago.

Once in the military with Tess’s husband, River is now a private investigator, and when Tess approaches him to find out about her husband’s mysterious past, River begrudgingly agrees. However, the more River and Tess unravel about her husband, the more Tess realizes that she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did. She also learns that River isn’t as terrible as she once believed, and there were justifiable reasons for his actions.

Tess is such a strong character, and she goes through a lot throughout the story. She learns as much about herself as she does about her husband. It’s difficult to move on after the loss of a loved one, and losing her husband has stagnated Tess. However, as things are revealed about him, Tess must look back on her marriage and face some hard truths – truths she didn’t want to see before. I felt for Tess and her struggles throughout the story. She deals with some heavy situations, and several shocking revelations change everything for her. Her story is emotional and messy and so much more than she expected. Luckily, she has the support of River and her friends to help her through.

Oh my word, the chemistry between Tess and River is so good, and I adored their enemies-to-lovers romance. Tess has reason to hate the man who almost ruined her wedding, but the more time they spend together, the more she realizes why she liked him so much in the first place. I love how River shows Tess in little ways how much he cares and always cared for her. They have the potential to have a love story for the ages, but so much stands in their way, and Tess really needs to resolve the mystery surrounding her husband before she can give herself fully to another. Their journey as a couple is challenging, emotional, and lovely all at the same time.

The book club that Tess hosts at her store is one I’d love to join! These women make such a great team, and they are incredible supports to each other. Stories that highlight the bonds of friendship and women supporting women are always a win for me, and this club where they read romance novels and talk about their lives sounds like the perfect balance of fun, bonding time. As the women are in their book club, many of the male citizens of this charming, small town, including several of their partners, hang out at the local bar. The male friendships parallel the women’s connection in their support and acceptance of each other, and the scenes when these friends are together are great!

I always enjoy books by Annie Rains. The characters are compelling, the stories are interesting, and the romances are wonderful. A story of lies, secrets, friendship, healing, forgiveness, and learning to love again, The True Love Bookshop is no exception. Thanks so much to Forever Publishing for sending me a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

5 stars. I absolutely loved this book. This is Annie Rains' best book yet! I've never considered anyone a book boyfriend, but River Harrison would definitely fit that category. I read this series from the beginning and never realized Tess was African-American or biracial, but I really like that she is. I wish more romance and women's fiction writers would include more diverse characters.

Tess Lane had always dreamed of owning a bookshop so when that dream came true she couldn't be happier. She loves hosting a weekly book club and the get togethers have helped her through the death of her husband. Moving forward has been tough because his death was such a mystery but she is slowly managing to do so. When his best friend who now works as a private investigator shows up in town all her precious questions make their way to the forefront. River wants to know what happened to his best friend and has come back to investigate. He hopes Tess can help him with uncovering some answers. The two set forward together hoping in the end they will have the answers they seek. Follow along on their journey, will Tess make peace with the past and start truly living again? Can River help her believe in love again?

Prior to reading this book, I had never heard of Annie Rains. But then when I looked her up on Goodreads, I found that I did recognize some of her book covers! They all look like Hallmark holiday movie covers and I am totally here for it! After recognizing her covers I was even more excited to read this book, considering I had in fact picked up one of her holiday books in line at the grocery store this year to check out while waiting to check out!

So what made me say yes to reading this one? Well, when it came across my desk for review, I couldn’t wait to pick up something light hearted and happy! I am almost always game for something light and happy especially at the holiday season. But the last few months I have been on a full tilt murder mystery kick and I needed this light and happy book now more than ever! So I wholeheartedly agreed to review this one in an instant! I am so glad that I did too!

This book came at the perfect time for me, and even though it’s part of a series, I didn’t feel lost or anything in this one. It had it’s own unique storyline and characters and honestly how could I pass on a book about finding love in a bookshop?! The answer is—-I couldn’t! What I didn’t count on was the unexpected mystery contained in this story. It was the perfect book to segue from all the intense thrillers I’ve been reading—a book with a bit of a mystery to satisfy my mystery craving, but also a HEA with romance and books!

I love small town romances! I know it’s not for everyone, but for me, I just love the charm and simplicity of a small town romance and I will say that this author does a fantastic job at creating a believable, quaint, and charming small town that readers will surly fall in love with! If you are a fan of Hallmark movies this is an author you don’t want to miss, she does a great job at creating believable characters, locations, personal struggles, romance, relationships and of course a HEA. I liked that this book had a little bit of everything with the death of Tess’s husband I got a bit of mystery, the friendships in this book play a big role so it ticks the box for women’s fiction for me and of course the love interest in River ticked the romance box. So if you are looking for something with variety then I think this would be a good option for you.

The bonus for me in this one was the enemies to lovers troupe. River and Tess are not friends, in fact Tess does NOT like River at all and I loved watching how their tension translated into attraction and chemistry later on. This isn’t a ‘bodice ripper’ romance so if you are looking for that you might want to try something else, but this is more of the sweet variety. That’s not to say there isn’t chemistry (there is) it’s just presented in a different way and I absolutely love that in this book.

I also really liked that Tess was a biracial character. So many “Hallmark romances” do not have a lot of diversity in their characters so I appreciated that about this book and thought it added to the plot even if it wasn’t the focus of the book. Representation matters so even if it’s small, it’s progress. I also love how much books are featured in this one. I mean who doesn’t love a book with a built in book club?! I love reading books that feature books so that made the story extra enjoyable for me. My only criticism of this book was while it had a lot of different topics that might appeal to a lot of readers, it sometimes felt like a lot. There are friendship themes, family themes, romance, mystery—-all the things so it felt a little busy at times but overall it was a fun read and I am so glad I finally got to read this author! I will certainly be picking up more of her books in the future!

I really enjoyed this book. This is more "women's fiction" than romance. Tess is still trying to recover from the loss of her husband and in this book you see the growth in her character as she searches for answers to questions she didn't even know she had. In her acceptance of what she finds out and in her changing views of certain people, you can feel the growth in her character.

River was Tess's husband's best friend until he did something to disrupt their wedding. He doesn't think Tess will ever forgive him, but as they work together to uncover truths and spend more time together, things are looking up. River definitely has an unexpected side that is very appealing. The secrets he's keeping from her may be his undoing and cause him to lose any hope of a future with her.

This is a story about Tess whose husband died after three years of marriage. Tess is trying to get over the fact that her husband died and she now owns a bookstore in her hometown. Things are not like they seem because her husband Jared was not faithful, and there were lots of secrets that he was keeping from her. Jared‘s best friend River who is a former Marine now a private investigator shows up the store. Tess hires River to investigate her husband. Enjoy this very much and I believe the author is a very good storyteller. and I’m looking forward to reading some of her other books.

The True Love Bookshop, by Annie Rains, is the third book in the Somerset Lake series, and an absolute joy to read! I loved everything about this story, from page one to the epilogue.

I easily connected with the characters, and found them to be likable and immensely relatable, realistic and respectable. The issues in the story, and the ways the characters handled them were insightful and provided a depth that was powerful and moving. Tess’s bookstore and the town itself were delightful, and the issues that Tess and River faced were heartfelt, and though remarkably difficult, handled admirably. Their love story was sincere and sweet and the pace of the story kept me engaged throughout its entirety.

I was enjoying the True Love Bookshop so much, I didn’t want it to end, but end it did, wrapping up with a satisfying, feel-good conclusion. I eagerly look forward to more from this author and series.

Well apparently this is book three in a series. Which I didn’t know when I picked it up, but that didn’t make it difficult to read. So in my opinion it can be read as a standalone.

Tess is newly a bookstore owner and a widow when River comes crashing into her life, just like when he came crashing into her wedding to stop it. Tess and River have a love hate relationship that provides tons of comedy, a lot of mystery, and good feels for the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing in this book and the small town feels. Tess and Moira’s friendship was fantastic, and I loved her as a side character.

One little nitpick is that the descriptions of characters was lacking making it hard to picture them at first. For example, at 23% into the book reader finally gets a description of what Moira looks like, after her having been in numerous scenes prior and not being described. Admittedly this probably wouldn’t be a problem if I had read the series in order so I’m not too concerned about it.

This book is for lovers of the miscommunication trope, only one bed trope, and soft fluffy dogs!

Hoping the next book is Gil and Moira’s story!

What a fun experience to visit Somerset Lake again with such vividly portrayed characters and a mystery, too! Tess has spent three years as a widow and is getting her life together by concentrating on her little business, the Lakeside Bookshop, when an old nemesis appears there and upends her world. River used to be her husband Jared’s best friend, emphasis on used to be since their friendship fell by the wayside when River did the unthinkable at Jared and Tess’s wedding. I enjoyed the interactions between Tess and River and how their relationship grew from barely concealed contempt to friendship and beyond. My favorite thing about the book was the mystery about Jared’s death that River agrees to investigate. This mystery occupies a good part of the book and was riveting and unexpected. All of the regular characters from Somerset make cameo-type appearances, so reading this book was like visiting a favorite place again. The book can be read as a standalone without feeling like you’ve missed anything, but I do recommend reading the other books in the series just to get to know all of the characters better. The plot was well-written and fast-paced and the introductions of new characters was seamless. I liked meeting Lara, Tess’s new helper in the bookshop who is in need of friendship. Tess, a caring and compassionate young woman, doesn’t hesitate to reach out to her. With themes of family, friendships, secrets exposed and forgiveness, this book is a warm-hearted look at small town life and the people who work together to make a town a happy place. Fans of light romance and a lovely storyline will enjoy this book and clamor for another visit to Somerset Lake.

Charming addition to a sweet series. Tess Lane is biracial and owes a bookshop once belonging to her aunt. She has been widowed for three years after her husband Jared died in a car accident. River Harrison was once a friend and fellow Marine with her husband. He’s now a private investigator. After running into him she decides it's time to get some closure about her husband. He wasn’t where he was supposed to be when he died. River wants Tess to be part of his life. He has had feelings for her since he was 19 but never shared them because Jared got involved with Tess.

The story is a little predictable but nicely told. Annie rains create a family/friend centered community and it was nice to see have couples from the other books be a part of the story. (I have read them.) The book can be read on its own. The book handles almost too nicely dealing with grief, moving on to new love, what makes a family, friendships etc. This book is clean with nothing more than kissing, but there are mentions of affairs and unfaithfulness. I appreciate the ARC from NetGalley and Forever (Grand CentralPublishing) in exchange for a review. And I look forward to the next book which I’m guessing maybe be about the bachelor mayor.

Thank you to Forever for the complimentary book. These opinions are my own.

Annie Rains always makes me smile. That started with the fabulous dedication for this book, "For my kindred spirits, the booklovers." This book features Tess, the owner of a book store where she also runs a book club of close friends. As soon as the Somerset Lake series began, I knew I was waiting for Tess to get a book.

Her background is a tough one. Her husband died three years ago, and there are questions about the circumstances of his death and whether he was fully honest with her. River was his best friend before a falling out. But he agrees to help Tess find the truth.

This was such a beautiful story. I find Annie Rains' writing so healing. This book tackles some really tough issues with such care. As always for this series, the book club providing group of female friends who fully support each other. And we also get a little insight into the men who meet at the tavern while the women meet for book club.

Though this is part of a series, you can read it as a stand alone. I loved it and am excited for the next book.

Annie Rains has done it again! The True Love Bookshop is a heartwarming second chance romance filled with unexpected twists and turns.

The True Love Bookshop is a sweet romance that rocks an enemies to lovers, second chance romance vibe. I found this story to be well written and it definitely tugs at the heartstrings. My heart ached for Tess and all that she went through. The things she discovered would have been tough on anyone and I was glad she had a man like River in her corner.

The True Love Bookshop was an absolute delight to read. Annie Rains never disappoints and I can't wait to see what romance she has in store for us readers next.

Such a cute story! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Although it is part of a series (something I found out after I got it from the library) it can also be read as a standalone.

First of all Thank you for reaching out to me to read and review this touching story. By the way I started it early this morning and I finished it the same night. Yes it is that awesome of a story. Tess and Rivers story touched my heart in so many ways. They go through quite the journey to reach their destiny. I’m afraid to say too much as I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else. So I will just say it’s one of the best books I’ve read. Don’t Miss this one! You won’t be disappointed. I promise.
