A stranger who appears on Kat's doorstep turns out to be one Charlotte Bristow, legal wife of Joe Bristow, the man Kat once believed herself married to—who she thought died at sea twelve years ago. Kat is jolted by Charlotte’s claims that not only was Joe murdered, but he had amassed a small fortune before he died. Charlotte makes the cook an offer she cannot refuse—if Kat can discover the identity of Joe's murderer, Charlotte will give her a share of the fortune Joe left behind.
With the help of Daniel McAdam, her attractive and charismatic confidante, Kat plunges into her own past to investigate. When it becomes apparent that the case of Joe’s death goes far deeper than simple, opportunistic theft, Kat and Daniel's relationship is put to the test, and Kat herself comes under scrutiny as her connection to Joe is uncovered. She must race to catch the real killer before she loses her job and possibly her life.
NY Times Bestselling author Jennifer Ashley writes historical, contemporary, and paranormal romance, historical mysteries, and urban fantasy as Jennifer Ashley, Allyson James, and Ashley Gardner.
I have adored this series from the very first and it truly does just keep getting better and better. The characters are so fleshed out, the mysteries are harder to solve and the hint of romance...is swoon worthy.
I love these rag tag characters and all their ups and downs and quirks. This is truly such a riveting series with a wonderful backdrop of time and circumstance. I can't get enough of it or recommend it enough to just about everyone.

In this engaging installment in the Kat Holloway Mysteries, Kat’s relationship with Daniel McAdam has hit rock bottom. In part, approached by a woman named Charlotte Bristow, the widow of Joe Bristow, plays into the strain of their relationship. This enjoyable story pairs our amateur sleuth Kat with Daniel McAdam, all while their slow-burning romances is woven into the pages of the series.
Why does Charlotte‘s appearance have an effect on Kat? Well, Charlotte is not the only widow of Joe. In fact, Kat is also Joe’s widow. How can that be? Was he married to both of them at the same time? And of course Kat needs to know what Charlotte expects of her now.
Missing Daniel deeply after the two had a falling out, Kat finds herself distracted by what Charlotte wants. Joe is said to have a fortune that he acquired and it would be helpful to both Charlotte and Kat. This could actually benefit her, considering this fortune Joe apparently had at the time of his death. So she starts investigating Joe’s death of a dozen years ago, and finds that she must enlist Daniel’s help yet again.
In this sixth book of the series, we have come to see that Kat is a very talented cook who has taken on some wonderful jobs in some beautiful environments. This book has less focus is on her cooking, and more on her past relationship with Joe, as well as how this in any way impacts her present and possible future relationship with Daniel. Meanwhile, Kat continues to spend as much time as she can with her young daughter Grace, who is happily living with another family and Kat loves that stability that Grace has. The two share a fond, loving relationship.
It proves impossible for Kat and Daniel to be away from one another, especially when Daniel‘s expertise as an undercover agent with Scotland Yard comes into play, but he is also a man of many faces. He might be able to get answers that Kat cannot.
What a delightful story and series as a whole. Jennifer Ashley has created this wonderful series set in the Victorian era, with people who work together, sometimes eschewing class distinction, to the better good of solving crimes, and in some cases murder.
This book can be read as a standalone novel, Readers will not have any problem following this engaging story. However, for the sake of continuity, especially as Kat and Daniel’s relationship blooms, reading the series from the beginning would definitely be a wonderful experience for any lover of cozy mystery with a touch of romance and danger.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Please enjoy my YouTube video review, including mini reviews of the first five books in the series -
This is a rather convoluted mystery of a missing fortune and Kat's husband Joe. The book blurb lays out the beginning of the story. The romance moved along at a glacial pace (Kat's beating herself up with repeated references to her mistake of marrying Joe) that it became tiresome. The mystery was the best part of the book and is why I rated it a 3.75*
LOVE this excellent series & its main character, the intrepid cook & crime-solver Kat Holloway, her beau Daniel, the quirky & kind secondary folks in her world, the period details & the clever mysteries. The only problem is that I cannot make each book last & have to wait a whole year for the next one!
Mrs. Holloway (Kat) is in service and has a knack for solving mysteries. While this novel is the sixth in the series, I didn't feel I was jumping into the middle of something or missing details. Kat's husband died 12 years prior and she is rather surprised to find that her husband had another widow and one who was his legal wife. Legal widow Charlotte reaches out to Kat for help in finding a missing inheritance.
As the cold case unfolds, readers learn more about the deceased as well as the character of Kat and her friend Daniel McAdam. There is a lot to love about both of them. I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop.
Engaging mystery with bits of dry humor. A small amount of foul language.
My gratitude to publisher Berkley Publishing Group for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
This is the best one in the series so far! And, they are all so good. We learn more about Kat's and Daniel's pasts. More fun from the quirky characters of Lady Cynthia, Tess and Thanos. It was wonderful how they all rallied around Kat with this disturbing revelation from Kat's past and to help her solve this murder/mystery. Great addition to the series. Tip: keep snacks close at hand while reading. Kat's always cooking scrumptious sounding things! ;)
This is my favorite book in the Kat Holloway series so far. We finally get more detail on Kat's life before she became the person we know today, and some more information about Daniel's past as well. Of all the mysteries these two have tackled together, this feels the most personal and moves the characters forward the most.
This is Book 6 (and my first) in the author's Below Stairs Mystery series, set in Victorian, England, and I was gripped from the start.
Having come late to the game, I was able to jump right in and not feel I missed significant details. That said, I enjoyed it so much that I want to start with Book 1 and learn all I can about MC Kat Holloway and her friend (leaning to more) Daniel McAdam.
In Bow Lane, they try to uncover the truth about the death 12 years ago of Kat's husband, who appears to have been legally married to another. Atmospheric, romantic and compelling, Bow Lane is highly recommended for fans of arresting historical mystery-thriller fiction.
Thanks to the author, Berkley Publishing Group, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
4.5 stars for the latest by one of my 'must read' authors.
The mystery this time hits our intrepid cook, Kat Holloway, right in the gut. Out of her past comes Charlotte Bristow, the legal wife of Kat's bigamist husband Joe, with a tale of murder and mystery. Charlotte has learned that Joe did not go down with his ship 12 years ago, but somehow made it to London, where he babbled about vast sums of money and plans for high living. Charlotte challenges Kat to find the money and to find out who killed Joe. The hunt begins..
The author manages to work in most of the cast of secondary characters--Lady Cynthia, Miss Townsend, vicar Errol Fielding, Mr Thanos--in service to the story. Daniel McAdams is also on hand, of course, to assist. However, his growing attraction to Kat causes a disruption in their very slow-burn romance. As Kat seeks to know him better, she learns more of his backstory (as does the reader). We also learn more of Kat's early life as she revisits her early home in Bow Lane.
I really appreciated that the mystery was tight, well plotted, with a very satisfactory (and logical!) conclusion. I also liked that we learn more of the mysterious Mr. Monaghan, and the nature of the hold he has over Daniel. Inspector McGregor also becomes a more sympathetic character as this story unfolded. The story ends on a high note. I am eagerly looking forward to what the author has next in store for Kat, Daniel, and their families and friends.
While each of the books in the series offers a mystery and could stand on their own, I highly recommend you start from the beginning. The character relationships and overall series arc deserve your full attention.
When Charlotte Bristow, the legal wife of Joe Bristow, shows up on Kat’s doorstep with a curious tale about money and murder, Kat cannot help but wonder. As much as the past pains her, she investigates. The case takes her back to her marriage, and time spent on Bow Lane.
Holloway shared an intriguing case that cleverly allowed her to shed light on Kat’s past and what led her to her current employment as a cook. We also learned about Daniel’s past and saw movement in the developing romance. Eep!
The story was tightly told and the unfolding of details and feelings were perfectly woven into the current story. I think perhaps this was my favorite of the series to date. I, of course, continue to love all the attention to detail, from clothing to menus prepared in the kitchen. The author makes you feel as if you are sitting in the kitchen below stairs in 1882 London.
This book is for you if …..
1. You love a good murder-mystery 2. Strong characters 3. A slow-burning romance 4. A man of mystery 5. An inquisitive and observant sleuth who also happens to be a cook in 1880s London This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Talk about a slow burn, and a mystery—rather close to home!
Kat Holloway is confronted by Charlotte Bristol, wife of Joe Bristol, the man Kat thought she was married to, with a wild tale of treasure he’d left behind. What follows is a mad and dangerous chase to places Kat should never go with devastating revelations. Daniel of course is dragged into this and tales of lost coins from the mint are doing the rounds. Only these aren’t mad tales and Kat’s in it up to her eyeballs before she can blink. So we have Charlotte wanting Kat to investigate, Inspector McGregor on the case, and Grace wanting to know more about where she and her mother lived. And the relationship between Kat and Daniel? Well that’s in there too. Burning right or out? All I can say is, Oh My. I’m so in love with Daniel McBride.
A Berkley Group ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher. (Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)
This series just gets better and better! I always look forward to a new Kat Holloway series. This series is set in the Edwardian period in London and what originally attracted me to it was the upstairs/downstairs aspect of Kat being a cook in a fancy London aristocrat's home. So while we get all sorts of information on what it was like to be a cook running the kitchen during those times, she also is savvy and curious which she uses to solve mysteries.
In this book, the sixth in the series, she is shocked when she is confronted by a woman who she knows of but has never met- the true wife of the man she thought she was married to, and the father of her child. This woman approaches her with disdain, but because of Kat's skills and reputation for helping people, she asks her to help solve the murder of the man they both loved. This is a shock to Kat who was told he drowned at sea. Added to that stunner was that he had a lot of money that had disappeared and if she can help find it for Charlotte, she can have some.
And with that, Kat is pulled into a past she would rather forget and learns more than she wanted to about a man who betrayed her. And all of this threatens the new sparks she has been developing for Danial McAdam, an undercover agent with Scotland Yard.
All this makes for good fun, a great setup to see more of Kat's backstory and either solidify or wreck her fledgling relationship with Daniel. I thoroughly enjoyed it! And I want to thank the publisher for access to an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
With clever writing and an intelligent plot, the author takes us on a vivid journey of Kat’s past.
Kat is confronted out of the blue with Charlotte Bristow, the legal wife of the man Kat had believed to be her husband. Charlotte spins a tale in which Joe was not only murdered, but potentially left a fortune behind that hasn’t been found yet. She offers Kat a portion of the money in exchange for investigating Joe’s murder and finding the loot.
The Secret of Bow Lane is very aptly named. It is where Kat and Grace lived shortly after her “husband”, Joe, passed away and she learned the truth of their union. Kat is taken back to the past when she decides to find out what had really happened to Joe. She takes Grace with her and through their eyes we get an excellent picture of the events that shaped Kat.
Daniel confronts Kat with the truth of his feelings for her and we experience all of Kat’s fluctuating emotions with her. And finally, after waiting in anticipation through 5 previous books, Daniel’s past is revealed, and he opens up to Kat about his current job.
As usual, I love Kat’s methodical approach to everything, the descriptions of life in her kitchen, and her interactions with Daniel. There were some parts that were a bit tedious and slow-moving and that’s why I’m giving it a 4.
The Kat Holloway Mysteries is a great series if you like historical novels, with some romance, plenty of emotion, and amateur sleuthing. It’s not necessary to read them in order, but Kat and Daniel’s relationship is an ongoing and growing thread between the books.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Kat Holloway series really heats up with this dive into personal mysteries for her and her friends to solve in this upstairs-downstairs historical mystery setting.
The Secrets of Bow Lane is the sixth in the Kat Holloway series featuring a Victorian era cook who does some amateur detecting. There is an ongoing storyline about Kat’s personal life rearing her child, hiding her past, and romantic interest with Daniel McAdams along with side stories for Lady Cynthia and Mr. Thanos and her assistant cook so that reading the series in order is a must.
In this latest, Kat gets broadsided with two situations. First there is Charlotte Bristow who comes to Kat because of Kat’s growing reputation for helping the police solve some mysteries and asks her help to find out about Joe’s death because he was murdered for a pile of money he supposedly had. Kat is none too keen, but if there is a missing fortune that Charlotte is willing to split with her, she must do what she can for her daughter, Grace’s sake. Secondly, Daniel assumes they are in a courtship and Kat is so stunned that he considers their friendship a courtship that her reaction is enough to hurt him and she watches him walk away. She’s left analyzing why she didn’t respond positively and realizes that after her experience with Joe, she needs to know more about Daniel, but at the same time, she aches for the loss of his presence and companionship especially as she embarks on another detecting adventure into her past. Unconventional Lady Cynthia has her back and helps by sending people Kat can trust to tell her about Daniel including Thanos and Daniel’s ‘brother’ and they all help with the new case. But, with both her own past and Daniel’s being confronted, she will get to the heart of the Secret of Bow Lane.
In a way, this book was no surprise. Readers have been curious about Kat and Daniel’s separate pasts for a long time and, as they drew closer, the pair of them were going to have to face their pasts and share them with each other if they were to go any further in their relationship. I also appreciated what the author was showing when she introduced Charlotte into the story and how, compared to her, Kat has gone far since being left destitute and pregnant by a man who wasn’t her real husband. Charlotte’s still nursing her woes and looking to someone else to save her while Kat has risen in her trade to save herself and Grace. The old murder and mystery over a missing fortune drove the plot forward along with the emotional character-driven side. As a result of both mystery and personal relationship sharing plot, this story read quickly for me because I kept wanting to know more and find out what was going to happen especially in the latter half which got moving much more swiftly. There was a most satisfying conclusion though there were little bits that left me wondering about a few things that will likely crop up in the future.
All in all, this latest was full of delicious and fascinating Victorian cooking moments, detecting adventure, and the tension that a well-developed set of characters and series plot can make. Those who enjoy historical setting with their mysteries should definitely set this series on the stack.
I rec’d an eARC from Berkley through NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.
My full review will post at Books of My Heart on July 30th
Read in a buddy read with Kara for COYER Community Challenge. She gave it 4.5 stars
Kat Holloway is shocked and surprised when her "husband" Joe's first wife Charlotte shows up on Kat's doorstep looking for Kat to help her solve a mystery. Charlotte has reason to believe Joe died with a fortune and she's willing to share with Kat if it was true. Charlotte also believes Joe was murdered and wants Kat to figure out who killed their man and what happened to the money. Kat is skeptical because she would have known if Joe had money and he never had any before but she sure could use the money to help pay for Grace's keep and to put away towards their tea shop. Kat reluctantly agrees to investigate. With the help of Lady Cynthia, Thanos, and the mysterious Daniel McAdam, she sets out to delve back into her past and discover who the man was who she thought she was married to. Kat also undertakes and investigation into Daniel himself, at the urgings of Lady Cynthia. Daniel indicates he wants to take their relationship to the next level and Kat panics. Who is he really? The worker or the gent? A secret police assistant or a thief? How can she trust him when he's lied about his identity so many times. She made that mistake once and won't make it again!
This story is a little different from the previous book. The investigation doesn't delve into anything political or anything seriously dangerous (maybe). The investigations are about Kat coming to terms with her past and trying to figure out how to move forward. For those of us who prefer the romance to the mystery, this is a delightful change. I adore the slow burn romance and I finished this book with a big smile on my face. The plot is a little slow at first and didn't pick up for me until more than halfway through. Then I had a hard time putting it down. I might read it again knowing what to expect now. The mystery was a little complicated.
I have always loved Kat and now I love her even more. She's so brave or perhaps foolhardy at times! Kat has had a tough life and has little patience for those who threaten her and those who whine about their lot in life when they have something she never had. The thing I don't like about Kat is how stubborn and obtuse she is about Daniel! Everyone can see how much he loves her, even little Grace! Grace has eagerly embraced Daniel as her friend and apparently she seems to have had a chat with James about their parents getting together. I LOLd at Grace's conversation with her mother about that relationship. It's not that easy for adults. Even Cynthia doesn't know the extent of Kat's scars from her relationship with Joe. Those scars have left a deep mark, one most people can't see. I thought Daniel understood but he doesn't quite it. Once bitten, twice shy. I think she's crazy! Daniel has shown over and over again what manner of man he is. He's so swoony! I'm half in love with him myself. I think Kat should focus on his character and not fixate on WHO he is. He's not that mysterious anymore. He's told Kat a lot more than he should. She knows some of his past and how he's reformed. He's a good father to James AND Grace. Daniel is not Joe and Kat needs to learn this. I think the plot of this novel serves the purpose.
Lady Cynthia and Thanos are another pair of obtuse lovers. Their relationship is complicated because he's an absent minded, penniless professor and she's a Lady even if her father is a con artist. Cynthia is very well aware of the hypocricy of Society, how money doesn't matter but breeding does. Everyone forgives her family for a LOT because of their birth. Her family should pay Thanos to marry her before she does something crazy and scandalizes the family further. I feel sad for her that she can't live her life the way she wants but I appreciate the effort she makes. I love how she remains loyal to Kat and uses her social position to protect Kat and stand up for her friend. Miss Judith Townsend has a brief cameo but Bobby is only mentioned and doesn't appear in the book. Thanos is so sweet and delightful. He's so incredibly humble and doesn't know how unique he is. He seems to appreciate Cynthia's help and he needs her to keep him organized. Their love is quiet and slowly blossoming.
Mrs. Bayswater is crazy. She's keeping Kat busy with her snooty social climbing ways, trying to impress her horrible society friends with fancy food. Kat gets the last laugh! I like how she is able to make simple dishes seem fancy. All the cooking in this series is so fascinating. Tess is a loyal friend to Kat and cheeky. She's rooting for Kat to succeed personally and professionally. Tess's love interest, Caleb, a constable, is sweet but he doesn't sound like he's all that sharp. I think Tess is more intelligent and runs circles around him but like Thanos, he might need her to keep him organized and ambitious. He plays a large role in the story. It was interesting getting to know him again. Mr. Fielding is as charming and roguish as ever. I think he has a good heart, deep down. He loves Daniel like a brother and that allows him to be kind to Kat and do what she tells him. I was glad for a tiny follow-up to his urchins. Mr. Davis is becoming a good friend as well. I don't think he's romantically interested in Kat but he sees her as a sister in service. They're family, united in their dislike of the cheapskate Baywaters.
Charlotte Bristow is a piece of work. She's bitter and sour. Charlotte thinks of Kat as a tart who stole her man. Kat is nothing of the sort and isn't shy about standing up for herself. Charlotte has had a rough life too and knows nothing about Kat. I think it makes Charlotte feel better for being cheated on if she thinks of Kat as a bad person. I would be torn in letting her think that about me but also wanting to stand up for myself. Charlotte does come to Kat and needs Kat's help so she better be nice to Kat. I feel sorry for Charlotte. She seems like a working class version of Lydia Bennet. She isn't as strong as Kat. Charlotte relies on men to help her out. Charlotte now relies on Mr. Tuck, Joe's friend. He seems decent, he has a steady job that pays OK, rents rooms in a decent neighborhood. I don't trust Charlotte and I think she and Mr. Tuck are bad news. Joe Bristow was a really horrendous person so any friends of his are suspect. I think Charlotte killed Joe for two-timing her and leaving her alone and broke. Mr. Smith, Joe's best friend, is another good suspect. He seems to know a lot more than he's telling or anyone else. He suspects Kat so I assume he's trying to deflect attention from himself.
Mr. Monahagn is scary. I think he's truly evil and don't trust him. He tries intimidation, threats and blackmail to get his own way. His background story is sad, to be sure, but Kat has the right of it. I think Monahagn was involved in the crime and killed Joe! Inspector McGregor may have insulted Kat and doesn't appreciate her help but he's fair. He's a good copper and should be promoted. Politics will probably keep him down. The wealthy Society people are fussy about letting the less fortunate rise the ranks even when deserved.
The people of Bow Lane are cautious and protective of their own. They seem suspicious of outsiders and those who left the neighborhood and don't return. Mrs. Redfern is only kind when she learns who Kat is. Because Mrs. Redfern liked Kat's mother, Mrs. Redfern is willing to open up figuritively and literally. Mr. Miller is more kind. He's sweet and fatherly. Nettie Sheppard, on the other hand, seems to loathe Kat. She's mistrustful of Kat and doesn't seem to like the police. I wonder if she was also involved with Joe and knows what happened to his money? I don't quite trust her.
This was a turning point in the series and I can't wait to see what happens next!
This is one of my favourite series' and an "auto read" when a new book comes out.
I enjoy 1800s era London as a setting and this series does a good job of bringing it to life, warts and all. The class differences make for interesting settings and situations and author Jennifer Ashley makes good use of that for her characters.
Speaking of the characters, I am in love with all of them in this series! Kat is wonderful; smart and capable, kind but brooking no nonsense. She is an excellent main character and I have become extremely fond of her.
The supporting cast of characters are also delightful, and I've enjoyed going along as their lives have grown and developed over the series.
The mysteries always are well-constructed and believeable with interesting plots for Kat and friends to figure out. Just a good, solid entertaining series of books and I recommend them highly!
Thank you to NetGalley, Berkley, and Ms. Ashley for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of this title. An honest review was requested but not required.
It's not stretch to say I'm a big fan if Jennifer Ashley's Below Stairs Mystery series. I love Kat Holloway: feisty, competent, and clever; talented cook, devoted (and secret) single mother, and amateur sleuth. The one agonist in this series is Kat's extremely SLOW burn romance with mysterious jack-of-all-trades Daniel McAdam. Well, folks, here it is: the series installment in which Kat and Daniel's characters (and relationship) are explored and expanded. FINALLY! The mystery is interesting, especially as it sheds inadvertent light on Kat's personal history, but I have to be honest: the mystery takes an unapologetic backseat to the drama playing out between Kat and Daniel. This is the book I was waiting for and I enjoyed every minute.
I mean, yes, I did enjoy learning more about the mysterious Daniel and his shady employer? boss? supervisor? Monaghan. I liked the in-house rivalry between Monaghan and whatever office he represents, and Inspector MacGregor. I liked seeing Grace explore Kat's history together with her mom. I also enjoyed the period cooking details, which really aren't given enough praise. Ms. Ashley clearly has spent quite a bit of time researching time-period appropriate cooking techniques and foods, which I'm sure are barely noticed in favor of the drama whirling around Kat and Daniel. (I get it.)
This is *definitely* not a series starter, though, nor is it the most intriguing mystery of the six Kat Holloway books. However, if you're a reader who has been enjoying this series, you cannot miss this one - I was absolutely glued. I can't WAIT to find out what the 'just one more' will be. ;)
Audio Version- Borrowed from Hoopla Narrator: Anne Marie Piazza
I should have listened to my own advice from book #5 and allow more time to lapse between books. This is the lowest star rating I have given any of the Kat Holloway mysteries. I found the narration annoying...Daniel's voice was almost creepy...breathy and very low. Just sounded different to me than how she has read his parts in the past. I was bored with the storyline this time too.
I won't continue this series in audible format. I'll borrow the e-book from the library and skim until I get an idea of how Kat and Daniel's romance is progressing (assuming it makes some progress!) and also look for a resolution for poor Cynthia and Thanos and their budding romance.
This time Kat has taken a leaf out of Poirot's Elephants Can Remember and Five Little Pigs by attempting to solve a 12 year old murder and mystery - or maybe it is the other way round since Kat predates dear Poirot 😆😅. Again, I am in admiration with JA's capability in writing new, fresh angles for each new Kat Holloway.
This time, the investigation felt very close to Kat as it was linked to her horrible not-husband. In vintage British detective stories, I am always amazed how people have long memories, recalling who spoke with whom, or who did what at what time. Everybody is a busybody 😁! It was very interesting as a many great things from Kat's and Daniel's pasts get unveiled in this book. So, I was right, Daniel is a spy employed by the earlier incarnation of MI-5 (Home Office), even if off the books. But has Daniel revealed all to Kat? Or are there other things he meant to reveal 'one day' and has not yet? The mention of 'true bastard' and the fortune he paid for Thanos remain a tingling mystery. Daniel may yet be well off and be really linked to the ton after all. I would love that development. And there is still the Naismith plotline. Now, I am afraid that the Kat Holloway adventures may soon be at an end as Daniel has now one more case to go... 😥 I hope there are still many books in this series 🙏😔
Well, now I have to wait a whole year before more Kat Holloway...
Trivia notes:
1. What happens for Grace's surname? Is it legal if William Glover became Joe Bristow, most probably not legally? What are the implications?
2. Though Charlotte unjustly resents Kat, I find it surprising that she did not threaten Kat's post as a respectable cook in Mayfair. With all the snobbery in the upper class, Charlotte had the power to really hurt Kat. Maybe she is not as mean as she sounds.

Look this one was about answering QUESTIONS and while I liked that I have the answers, I do feel like I missed our crew LOTS. Not that they weren't there, but this was a lot of deep diving and setting things up for a new phase WHICH I AM SO EXCITED FOR!!!!! But I do hope the next book contains lots of Cyn and Thanos, and Tess and Caleb and James, and DANIEL of COURSE because their interactions are part of what makes this series sparkle. HOWEVER: iamsogladweknowwhatsupnow especially after some of those THINGS (!!!!!!!!) that a certain person SAID OUT LOUD (!!!!!!!!!) this is not coherent but iykyk
and it only took me forever to read because I couldn't bring myself to finish it. i need more like. now.
PRE-REVIEW i would both kill and die for this book i actually can't breathe
1882 Kat finally meets Charlotte Bristow the real and first wife of her supposed husband Joseph. She needs Kat's help as she believes Joe was actually murdered for his wealth, and promises to share when it is found. As Kat investigates she has the help of her friends, but what will be revealed about Joseph. And what of Kat's friend Daniel. A well-written, enjoyable, and well-plotted historical mystery, with its cast of likeable and varied characters. Another good addition to this entertaining series. An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is possibly my favorite in the series so far as you learn so much about Kat and her past life. You also leans more about Daniel- and finally things move forward between these two. So, if you love these characters, you will really want to read this book as soon as it comes out!
Gifted cook and not-so-amateur sleuth Kat Holloway is back with a cold case that hits close to home in The Secret of Bow Lane. When Charlotte Bristow – the legal widow of the man Kat had once believed herself married to – shows up on her doorstep with a tale of murder and a lost fortune, Kat is taken aback…but also intrigued. With the help of her friends (and the man who is slowly becoming much more than a friend) Kat looks to the past for answers, and learns more than she bargained for. It’s a cold case, but because of how closely it’s tied to Kat’s past it’s a very interesting one. I enjoyed learning more about Kat’s history and to see her interact with those who knew her before she had become the woman she is today. Along the way, author Jennifer Ashley also doles out more information about Daniel McAdam, which I was equally excited by. Kat and Daniel have a very slow burn romance but as they open up to each other more and we learn more about their pasts, the two become closer and the love story moves forward.
The Secret of Bow Lane is the sixth novel in the Below Stairs series and to fully enjoy it you should at least be familiar with the cast of characters before diving into this book. Kat and Daniel’s relationship is one of many connections in this story that makes the world come alive. I adore the entire supporting cast, from Cynthia to Mr. Thanos to Tess and beyond. All the characters are well-drawn and come with unique personalities and voices that help make the book come alive. With its enjoyable characters, Ashley’s engaging writing style, and an interesting mystery that both stands on its own and moves overarching plots forward, there’s no way The Secret of Bow Lane could fail to entertain. I finished Kat’s latest adventure a well-satisfied reader and I’m looking forward to seeing where Jennifer Ashley takes our favorite cook next.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
In the latest outing of this historical mystery series, Kat is sought out by the woman who her late husband was already married to when he then married her. It seems that their bigamist husband did not die in the manner they were told, and may also have hidden away a fortune in stolen gold. If Kat, who is known to have a knack for solving mysteries, will help her find the gold, the first Mrs. Bristow promises to share it with her. This was a genuine pleasure to read, especially after the historical mystery I read right before it. It is wonderfully well-written and researched, and Kat and all of the other characters, both familiar and not, come alive and are easy to visualize and care about as they move through the events of the story. This is the way historical mysteries are meant to be written. Can't wait for the next one!
This book was somewhat different as it was more about the Heroine finding the true story of her past. Like the others, I sort of had a thought of who the villain could be, and ended up right after ruling out the other possibilities. Quick paced, all the characters working together as usual. I was sorry James didn’t seem to have as big a part as the other books. Good news, Book 7 is now available, bad news is the audiobook doesn’t seem to be available yet. I continue to listen and very much appreciate the narrator’s female voices. As before, though, I’m not quite as fond of the Hero’s voice and some of the other males. The hero needs to be stronger! Anyway, I will report on Book 7 as soon as it’s finished. Happy reading, all!
