There is one thing Kaela knows for sure... The only person I can trust is my best friend Caroline. So no one is more shocked than I am when I agree to go back to a town I refuse to call home to participate in a wedding for someone I refuse to call my sister. Lucas was a crush I wrote some stupid poems about in high school. He wants me to believe those poems still mean something and that I belong here. Those are two things I know for sure aren’t true.
There is one thing Lucas knows for sure... Kaela Henry belongs to me. The moment she walked into the diner, I knew it. Convincing her that her place is with me is harder than I thought it would be. She wants me to believe I don’t know her heart as well as I know my own. She thinks I will lose interest if she holds out long enough. Those are two things I’m determined to prove otherwise.
What they know for sure... Life will never be the same again. For Kaela, it will be learning to trust her own heart and the definition of family doesn’t include blood. And for Lucas, it’s understanding that it may not always seem like it but love usually shows up when it should – and not a second before.
Kaela and her sister Kenya don't have the best relationship, so when Kaela is invited to her sister's second wedding, her suspicions are raised, and rightfully so. Lucas, Kaela's childhood crush, is being primed to take over for his father as Alpha of his pack. They didn't run in the same circles back then, but did golden boy Lucus feel a connection to her she never knew about? Things start to heat up and the truth about Lucas comes out. Even though Kaela is attracted to Lucas, that doesn't mean she's ready to give up everything to bond with him as his Luna. She isn't like his adoring female fans, she is strong and independent, therefore will need some convincing. And about that Kenya... oh man that is one crazy villainous. Thankfully, Kaela has her best friend, Caroline. Because blood isn't always thicker than water. The reason I adore Sloane's writing, is because I feel like her characters are talking directly to me, the dialogue is that real. And with all of Sloane's books, there come the moments that just stab at your heart. All in all there is something about her books that makes me so happy, and I can't wait for her next release!
When Kaela is guilted into going back home to her small town never in her wildest dreams did she think the boy she was in love with as a girl would finally notice her.
Ok I’m so torn on this one. I liked all the characters quite a bit. The MCs were both likable and I just wanted to see them happy. The supporting characters were all wonderful additions except for Kaela’s family. I loved Lucas’ mother and every time she pulled out that stylist.
Now for the but. I completely understand why our h has the trust issues she has and hates the town, but there was a time in the middle of the book I was over it. Not because she didn’t have a point but because she had said she would give him a chance but she really wasn’t. She was always keeping her distance. Also they don’t really develop their relationship until the last 40% of the book and everything happens quickly and that’s saying something because I love a good insta-love story. I think if she would’ve stayed in town with Ro leading up to the birth and in that time we could’ve seen Lucas courting her it would’ve been better.
Also, mo epilogue?! After all she went through it would’ve been nice to see her life once she got settled, what did she decide about her sister, did they have kids?! The book just kind of abruptly ends.
Kaela fell in love with Lucas in high school, after her love for him is posted all over the school and their small town she vows to leave and never come back. 12 years later Kaela is back to attend her sister’s wedding and support her pregnant best friend.
Let me start with the good, I enjoyed Kaela’s relationship with her best friend Caroline. The writer does a really good job of portraying their sisterhood and the love they have for each other. In fact their love is conveyed and expressed more than Lucas and Kaela. Also, she is a strong believable character, her skepticism and questions were normal. I wouldn’t have trusted the situation either.
Which takes me to the bad, everything happens in a matter of weeks and there’s no real time spent with them as a couple. I never could get invested with them being together, in fact, I wanted her to explore a relationship with Lamar or Peter.
This is a full length novel but I had several questions by the end. First I didn’t even know she had a dad, it’s just thrown in at the end. Her whole family dynamic is never explained or why her sister is so bitter with her. The little bit of conflict/action at the end was random and didn’t add to the story. It just reinforced my thought that she was better off in Chicago. Lastly, this felt like a part 1 book not a complete story. There’s not enough time in the story to become invested in them as a couple. At the end the writer indicates a novella will come out soon. Hopefully, the novella will wrap up loose ends.
This was just a 4 star read for me but I recommend for those who like a strong female heroine.
I have now read two books by Taryn Sloane. I do enjoy her stories. This book is a “typical” shifter / human, paranormal romance. The characters (especially the FMC) are well-developed. Although no reason is given for the animosity between the FMC and her main antagonist, the emotional damage to the FMC is explored and described thoroughly.
There are side characters in the book who seem to have been introduced in another book. As a reader, you feel like you should know them when they make their cameos but their backstories are not necessary to understand this plot. One other issue I had was the FMC is never described physically. Not until beyond page 30+ was it confirmed she was a Black woman. (There were many references to the MMC’s physical looks, e.g. his gold, blond hair, blue eyes, etc.)
Nevertheless, I will keep reading Ms. Sloane’s books.
If you are looking for a second chance romance involving a sexy alpha-wolf determined to claim his one true mate, this is it.
I understood Kaela's fears, doubts, and reservations about returning to her hometown, especially when her family caused them. However, the hopeless romantic in me hoped like crazy Lucas would win her over.
In addition to the main characters, there were supporting characters I also connected with or found I wanted to know more about. Caroline and Grant; Lamar; Lucy and Jack.
I'm not sure if this book will become a series, but after reading and interacting with these characters, I've become invested. Well done!
The main female character, was exhausting. She was immature, and got on my nerves. The storyline was good. It could have been really, good if the characters were stronger. This is my second book by this author. In the first book, the character, was angry, and just bitter. I don’t appreciate, the angry black woman portrait.Especially, since I am a black woman, that knows it’s not true. I don’t think, I will be reading this author again.
This is a wonderful and complex shifter story. Kaela has loved Lucas since the first day she saw him in high school. Secrets and sabotage separated what could have been. Now years later, Kaela is back and Lucas realizes that she is his true mate. With so many factors and outright enemies, will they be able to overcome?
