Emma's adventures continue as she solves crimes and mysteries in book three of The Notebook Mysteries series. The will comes with responsibilities and complicated tasks that also allow her to continue to expand their team's reach and bring old friends closer. A new case will involve hidden plots, murder, drugs, kidnapping, new and old friends from the first two books in this series. Secrets about Jeremy and Emma's personal life are exposed during that dramatic case that will keep you guessing. Emma will have to use all of her skills to save those in danger. Emma adds to her adventures by meeting Tony in Paris. He needs help and Jeremy has an ulterior motive when he convinces Emma to go alone to Paris to help a friend. How can she say no? "This tale will draw you in and will delight those who are a bit of an amateur sleuth themselves." Don't miss book 3 of this engaging series!
Kimberly Mullins is the author of a series of books called “Notebook Mysteries”. She also writes Adult historical fiction under the name K. R. Mullins. She holds a BS in biology and a Masters in business. Her favorite classes were in history. She lives in Texas with her husband and son. When she is not writing she works as a Process Safety Engineer at a large chemical company. You can connect with her on her website at kimberlymullinsauthor.com, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
A modern day ‘Nancy Drew,’ the willful, quick-witted sleuth Emma faces trials with determined vigor and her keen eye and rises to every challenge! Armed with her intelligence and often under-estimated by her enemies, Emma takes an inheritance and turns it into a charity to change the world around her, while solving cases and living a thoroughly modern life far ahead of her times. Stolen drugs from a charity hospital! Art counterfeits in France! A child kidnapping ring and vengeful escaped cons combine to make this a fast paced, fun novel. Who doesn't love throwing knives hidden in her hat! And the author once again treats the readers to recipes in the final appendix.
If you haven’t read the first and second book, you may find it difficult to understand the setting and characters as this novel picks up immediately after the ending of the second Notebook Mystery. Emma has chosen Jeremy and they begin to build a thoroughly modern life together, solving mysteries and helping people in late 19th Century Chicago. Emma collects her special team, a league of talented crime fighters aligned with the Pinkerton agency. I loved how the author worked in real events from the 1890s and the fact that the French dialogue is left in its native tongue, providing a real flavor of life in that period when it still took days to ride the train to New Jersey and you needed a carriage to go all the way to New York, and the weeks it took to cross the Atlantic Ocean. And throughout the book, mysterious asides let us readers know that evil stalks our heroine and there must be more to follow! A great, fun book and highly recommended.
Having read and enjoyed the previous two books in this series I was looking forward to this third novel and was definitely not disappointed. It was good being back with Emma Evans as her adventures with solving crimes and mysteries continued, in this enjoyable and engaging YA novel. Set in Chicago, in 1885, Emma is contacted about the reading of a will involving a prior client, she has to determine if this inheritance is a good thing or not. On a trip to New York City, Jeremy and Emma become closer and their relationship deepens, so much so that they want to stay together on their return, but there are limited choices for a young couple in 1885. A new case soon becomes complex involving, kidnapping, murder, drugs and hidden plots, luckily Emma has a team of both old and new friends to help her solve this. However, the case becomes personal when secrets are exposed about Jeremy and Emma’s personal life, and loved ones are put in danger. Emma also agrees to meet Tony in Paris as he needs help, but Jeremy has an ulterior motive when he convinces her to go alone. The authors descriptive narrative brings the settings and era vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the story. The exciting storyline and plot twists kept me hooked from start to finish, and I liked ‘catching up’ with old friends from the previous books. This can be read as a standalone story, but for more of an understanding of Emma’s backstory, I would recommend reading the series in order. I hope there will be a fourth book in this series.
This book finds Emma and her cohorts involved in several mysteries! She finds out she has come into a significant inheritance that she, with the help of her teammates, decides to put to charitable use. As they set up the fund, there are several hurdles that they encounter. New friends are made, and new buildings are acquired for their purposes. Good news abounds for her sister and Emma finds herself in a bit of a medical emergency. The bad guys keep coming and adventures always seems to find her wherever she goes. After they set up their charitable agency, an old enemy tries to thwart their plans. Will the team be able to track him down before disaster strikes?
This is a most enjoyable series! There is always something going on mystery-wise. Emma solves one and the next one seems to find her without her even trying! I like how she always seems to be in the right place at the right time to solve everything, but it is through her observations that she figures it out. I feel like anyone could take a page out of her notebook and learn to observe others before responding!
3.5 stars The third book in this cozy mystery series sees Emma once again ensconced in murder and mayhem. You need to read the first two books as they follow on from each other. In doing so you get to know the characters in more depth and have a better understanding of where they have been and what shaped them. We meet up again with old friends and dig our way through suspense and mystery, kidnapping and drugs. Our strong-minded sleuth is not one to step away from a challenge. So, stepping up to handle a charity is just what she will do and do well to help those in need. Add in a trip to Paris and a romance where they want more and the adventure ramps up.
This was a really good read! The storyline was enthralling and interesting and the characters were loveable, ones you can connect to. This series (and this book) can be read a standalone but it does help to read the previous books, because of certain character introductions. By one complaint (that seems to prevalent to all the books) is that the time goes back and forth in each story. I feel like it gets a bit confusing at times but other than that that's my only complaint. This was a very gripping, cozy YA mystery story!
Changes and Challenges is Book 3 in the Notebook Mysteries Series in which young Emma Evans is the heroine of the story. Set in 1885 this book centers around Emma who runs a business of her own with employees who help her solve crimes. Armed with her keen observation skills and with her trusty notebook in hand she sets out to solve the mysteries that seem to pop up everywhere she goes.
In Book 3, Emma and Jeremy’s romance is blossoming and she is faced with the challenge of how to handle this relationship without the restraints of marriage and having children. This is a rather difficult and complex situation because in 1885 it is a sin to live together without being married. Determined to make it work, Emma and Jeremy devise a plan to maintain their relationship on their own terms.
There is a lot going on in Emma’s life and she faces each new situation with strength and determination. Emma’s life changes dramatically when she is asked to the reading of a will of one of her former clients. To her surprise Emma is given a substantial inheritance and she must figure out the best way to manage this gift. Emma decides to set up a charity with the inheritance so that she may help make the world a better place.
Emma’s life is far from boring and at every turn she finds mystery and intrigue. When Emma is asked by a local charity hospital to investigate missing drugs it is not long before she uncovers a large underground child kidnapping ring. A trip overseas to help Tony solve the case of his missing friend leads Emma to a plot involving murder and takes her deep into the world of counterfeit art in France.
I loved the strong character development of the main character Emma, who is lovable and easily relatable. She is smart, feisty, strong-willed, stubborn, tough as nails and not easily bossed around. Emma has keen observation skills and is quick to notice the little things that many others overlook which helps her solve crimes. This book was full of action, adventure, suspense, mystery, danger, intrigue and even a bit of romance. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the first two books in the series because they introduce the characters and lead up to Book Three. I highly recommend this book!
It is 1885 and Emma Evans is back with her mystery solving crew and her trusty notebook and after a break following her last case, she is called in to hear the reading of the will of someone involved in that case, much to her surprise and thinking that it will only be something small she agrees to the meeting. When she gets there, she is shocked by the information inside and what it will mean for her future.
Leaving the office, Emma has a lot to think about and needs to talk to her nearest and dearest about the decisions she will have to make in the very near future, these decisions mean that she will also have to make a trip to New York, so one is hurriedly organised and as the train leaves none other than Jeremy make it known that he is also travelling to New York, so they end up spending a lot of time together. As business meetings and paper reviews occupy Emma, she ends up becoming embroiled in yet another mystery to solve and leans on Jeremy to help her solve it, in fact things blossom between them and further decisions on a more personal level have to be confronted when they return home.
As usual, nothing runs smoothly in the life of those around Emma and so just as one case closes, she is called to another and this one is in Paris and involves her friend Tony, she is encouraged to go despite everything which has occurred and cannot keep out of trouble. Will Emma be able to cope with everything piled on her shoulders, or will everything come crashing down around her as she uses all of her skills and techniques to keep abreast of the situation?
This is another thrilling set of mysteries for Emma and her team to solve as drugs, kidnapping, murder, hidden plots and more will keep you on the edge of your seat as the twists and turns keep coming and the drama heightens throughout.
Mysteries make great adventures if the author is a great story teller and in this case, Kimberly Mullins has definitely struck gold!
This book is number three in the author’s Notebook Mysteries series. The story begins in 1885 with the main character, Emma who resides in Chicago. She embarks on a new adventure after finding that her fortune is about to drastically change after learning she is now the heir to a very substantial estate that belonged to a former client. While trying to determine how best to handle the sizable estate, she immediately takes charge and puts together a team that she feels will allow her to properly manage her obligations.
Emma soon finds that she must travel to New York City. Fortunately she was able to take Jeremy with her to assist during her NYC trip. While she may not be fond of the idea of marriage, she is very much enjoying her time with Jeremy. Emma also travels to Paris to meet up with her friend, Tony, but danger lingers.
I loved the imagery the author created when describing Emma’s travels. If you are fond or familiar with Chicago, New York City or Paris, you will find the author’s descriptions are quite stirring.
This book will have you hooked while trying to determine what will come next as a new case evolves within the pages, but this story is anything but predictable so do not expect to know what happens. It will keep you guessing. It is a great addition to this mystery series and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the next book.
I have very much enjoyed getting to know Emma Evans and her family/team. This author has hit the nail on the head again when it comes to telling a story as it pertains to different characters. The third person narrative once again steals the show, and I thoroughly enjoy the way that she focuses each chapter on a certain event/character, I find it really allows for the reader to follow the story line without feeling bombarded with a ton of information all at once. The love that has developed deeper between Emma and Jeremy is adorable, and is long-term relationship goals for me, I’ll be rooting for them all the way!
Life is full of changes, and challenges, and the ones that come up throughout this specific adventure are relatable, especially for me, and I feel like the emotions tied into the different cases that are being taken on by this team are described to a T. One of my favorite things about this series so far is that it’s never just one thing going on, and the pace is, in my opinion, perfect. Without even realizing it, you’re drawn in to help solve the cases, and try to beat them to the punch, and I absolutely love disappearing for a while into these adventures. Keep them coming, please, highly recommend reading this series!
This is the first book that I've read by this author and in this series. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book but feel like I was missing a huge chunk of information that was given in the first two books. I wish I would have read the other two books first, but alas, I did not. I do plan to go back and catch up though for future books in this series.
Emma reminds me a lot of the Nancy Drew books that I read as a younger child. I love Emma's style of reasoning and the detective work she conducts with the Pinkertons. I like that she has a love interest but is he really? It took me until the middle of the book to really grasp the whole of what was going on and it was the last third of the book that really had me wrapped up in the story. Again, likely because I wasn't aware of the connections or who these characters were. They've been working together for awhile now and have a significant history with each other. I read this book in two sittings (only because I had to drive from one place to another!) and it was an easy read (minus the French that I know nothing of but the reader will get the gist of it!)
I look forward to reading the first two books in this series as well as those that follow!
5 Stars Notebook Mysteries ~ Changes and Challenges (Notebook Mysteries Book 3) by Kimberly Mullins
Changes and Challenges is the third book in the Notebook Mysteries Series and my absolute favorite of the series. This is a Historical Mystery that pulled me in from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down till I finished. This is the perfect book for a cloudy day. I highly recommend reading this series in order as each book is just as good as the last and this one picks up where we left off. The author does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life and keeping the storyline flowing. I loved all the characters and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat all while trying to figure out the mystery. Changes and Challenges takes place in Chicago in 1885, Emma finds herself on a new adventure after an inheritance from one of her prior clients. Follow along as Emma and her friends as they solve the mysteries. I highly recommend reading this to find out what happens next. I don’t want to give to much away. If you love Historical Mystery then this is definitely a book/series for you. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.
Emma finds herself being called to a reading of a will from a former client and she is surprised to say the least. Of course what is left to her comes with strings, but it also will provide her the opportunity to expand as well as bring some old friends back into the fold. As the relationship between Emma and Jeremy grows they find themselves not wanting to be apart, but because of the times they cannot just start living together. Aside from more personal matters they do have a lot on their plates what with a friend and his family being kidnapped, a friend needing help in another country, and all the paperwork that came along with the reading of the will. How will they solve their dilemmas?
I do like the fact that Emma is a strong, independent and forward thinking character. It is also great that for the time period the story is set that Jeremy does not try to deter her from her hopes and dreams, but instead encourages her. So far this series has kept me entertained and I look forward to more from this author.
Changes and Challenges is the 3rd book in the Notebook Mysteries series. I did not read the first book, but I did read the 2nd book. You could probably read this as a stand alone book, as it is a solid storyline. The characters do overlap, but their relationships are well enough explained to understand who is who. I really enjoyed this book. I like that Emma is a strong brilliant female, in a time where the world was led by males. While it is probably not the most accurate, in terms of international travel and sending wires as often as she does (that was expensive in the 1800s and only for the rich...) but that aside, it is a very good book. This book has a LOT going on, and I feel like it could almost have been 2 books, but it worked well. Emma is on another adventure, playing detective with her boyfriend Jeremy and her ex and now friend Tony. I hope there is another book, because I want to see how things go with the new house and hope there is more development on Emma's sister and brother in law.
This is not my first book by this author but I enjoyed this one just as much as the first one. This is a well written story that takes place in Chicago in 1885. Emma finds herself in a new adventure that is full of action, murder, hidden plots, and so much more. I enjoyed seeing characters from the previous books. They are strong, creative, relatable characters that made the story entertaining to read. This is a fast paced, engaging story that pulled me in from the beginning. I enjoyed the growth and chemistry of the characters and how they support each other. The author’s use of details brought the story to life and had me coming back for more. This is the third book in this series which I highly suggest reading the previous books as well. They are just as enjoyable and Emma will take you on an adventure you won’t soon forget. I really enjoyed what Emma brought to the story and I highly recommend this book.
This is the 3rd book in the Notebook Series. I would really recommend reading the first 2 books in the series first as they themes and characters all follow through the series. This book continues from the end of the last book. What I love about these books is how well the stories are written. You completely feel transported to the era the books are written in. The stories are a great read, they are full of mystery and murder and our main character Emma has loads more challenges to overcome, from learning to run a charity made with a donation from a wealth client to solving a mystery involving drugs, kidnapping and more. Adding to this mystery is another case brought to her by an old flame but are things as they seem? It is a thrilling read that will need the reader hooked and guessing from beginning to end. You feel captivated and transported in time which adds to the charm of this series.
This series is amazing to say the least! I love the sleuth Emma and her adventures she goes on I love the atmosphere the books take place on as well! I love how the mystery takes time to unravel and you have to use your own sleuth skills to figure out what the "culprit is"
Something I do love about this author, is they have created a wonderful heroine you can not help but love! I love Emma and her mind. She is bright as they come I would say. What I love about Emma is she never leaves her mind far from the truth. I also love how descriptive the author is when they are writing. I feel as if I am transported to a different time. The book was nothing short of amazing. Loved it, and I was just left wanting more. I loved the book, the characters, and how things led up to the end!
Amazing book, that truly is a ride of enjoyment! Love the author as well! I love their writing skill truly. I highly recommend this book, this author and this series! A must read!
Notebook Mysteries ~ Changes and Challenges by Kimberly Mullins
This isn't the first book I've read by the author. The Notebook Mysteries is a good series. Changes and Challenges is a great read and you won't want to miss it.
Emma is left everything from Millie's grandfather after he passes. She then finds a case that she will be going to alone. Jeremy sends her there and there's a reason why. The quote I chose for Emma is: “Unfortunately, or maybe, fortunately, Mr. Carlyle died of natural causes before he could hear his granddaughter’s guilty verdict.”
Jeremy is working on a case downtown and will not be joining Emma. Instead he hopes that he can keep their secrets. Can he do that and keep Emma safe? The quote I chose for Jeremy is: “I’ll be on my way, also. I’m working a case at Citizens bank downtown. I’ll be there all week if you need anything.”
What a whirl wind of story! Emma and team definitely know how to keep you on the our tows from one mystery to the next. Chicago is brewing with population , unemployment, and violence issues around this time and you can see them vividly in this novel. This environment its unlikely the Company and Pinkerton’s stay still for long! I felt like I saw more action here than in the previous novel, but I did enjoy watching Emma grow and mature in this part of her journey. Especially with her friendship with Thomas and Jeremy, her family and business! Emma is still someone I would love to be friends or have in my corner no matter what. Though there were a few scenes I felt didn’t need to be included as it slowed the story down. I would definitely recommend for young adult readers. There is a hint of romance but nothing detailed as we have seen in other books. It is tastefully done and doesn’t cross that line detail for young readers.
The Notebook Mysteries series is an intelligently-written set of novels set in the 1880s, with a smart feminist protagonist. Emma runs her own business, employs workers, solves crimes, and supports those in need of help. When she is given the opportunity to help even more people, with the help of a large inheritance, she expands her network to handle the responsibilities of that role. But there is more than enough excitement beyond that - mysteries to solve, trouble to set right, and even working out how to be with the man she loves without the bonds and limitations of marriage and children. It is great to see a series about such a smart capable woman living her best life, especially in the late 19th Century. A good YA mystery novel with elements of many genres, I think this story has wide appeal for lots of readers.
Notebook Mysteries ~ Changes and Challenges (Notebook Mysteries Book 3) by Kimberly Mullins. I have loved this series so much and I truly hope there is another book. Its a type of modern day Nancy Drew about a lady named Emma who took her inheritance and used it to make positive changes in the world. Emily and Jeremy are a couple and they are building a very modern life together. This story starts off with a bang with kidnapping, murder, drugs and mystery abound. The crime is set in 1885 and it becomes personal to Emma because her family members are put in danger during this time. Will Emma be able to keep everything from falling apart since everything is on her shoulders and will she be able to keep her loved ones safe? Read this amazing mystery and be prepared to keep flipping pages until you are finished! Its that amazing!
I have been following this series and was excited to pick up this book. Emma is such a progressive character for this era. If I was a little girl in that time period, she would have been a woman to look up to. Not only that, she cares deeply for those she calls her family and wants to protect those who need help.
This book continues her story as her life and career progress. This isn't just a story revolving around one mystery. Just when you think the mystery is solved and everyone can relax, something else pops up, needing to be solved. I like this style, it keeps the mind constantly intrigued. This isn't all just about solving mysteries either. Relationships are progressing, and new friendships are made.
Overall, this is a wonderful historical mystery book that I highly recommend. It is better in my opinion to read the previous books first.
This is book three in this exciting young adult historical mystery series. As with the previous two books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well. Then again I am into historical books, so this was a no-brainer for me to pick up to read. And it picked up right where the previous book ended. I must admit I always love when series books do that because it is easier to keep up with. This one took place in Chicago which I am very familiar with as I have family that lives there so it was fun to read a mystery taking place there in the 1800’s. I love these characters. And the author does a wonderful job with the mystery and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed it just as much as the previous books. I can’t wait to ready book four.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I like reading mysteries from time to time and thought this would be an interesting read as it takes place in Chicago in the 1880’s. Although I haven’t read the prior books in the series, I was able to figure out how all the characters connected. I’m sure the book would be even better if I had read the first two books in the series. In this book, Emma finds out that sh is inheriting a large sum from a prior client. With help from her team of friends, Emma steers her way through danger, intrigue, and so much more. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and found aspects that I could relate to. I think I will be reading the first two books in this series soon.
Since I had read the first 2 books already, I was able to jump right in and be familiar with their surroundings from the end of book 2. Book 3 is wonderful, but I think I'd have felt lost if I didn't have the back story.
Emma Evans is an accomplished teenage sleuth in 1880's Chicago with her own clientele and team, both of which keep growing. In this installment, Emma has to travel to New York to attend the reading of the will of a former client. On her travels, she and Jeremy realize they don't want to be apart. What options do they have? The answers are woven beautifully throughout the drama, love, drugs and so much more. Looking forward to learning how the established and new relationships continue to play out in book 4!
A very interesting cozy mystery. When I first saw the cover of this cozy mystery and having read the previous two books I just knew that I had to read it. That being said if you haven’t read the previous two books in this series, I wouldn’t recommend starting with this one. While it could be read as a stand alone you might find it hard to understand the characters and the setting if you start here. But trust me when I say you won’t be sorry if you read the whole series. The writers story is highly original, the characters are amazing, and this cozy mystery has everything that a girl could ask for. So if your looking for a great new mystery to read this weekend then pick this one up today.
In this book the author transported me back in time to Chicago 1885 and what a wonderful story it was. I really enjoyed this book and found it so engaging to read, I really did feel like I was on this journey with the main character Emma trying to solve the mystery with her. The author really managed to grab my attention from the very beginning with her wonderful descriptive language and fabulous story telling. I haven’t read the first two books in this series and I absolutely will be doing so, it may just help me get to know and understand the characters a little better but I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more from this author!
This book was full of interesting stories and characters. Once the story really built up I became more and more interested in where the story was going and the ending. This author does a really good job at building the characters from the start, and as more and more characters are added to the story with more depth I realized the story was going in a much different direction than I originally thought! I enjoyed reading it and you will too! I also noticed that although it was set back in time, I did not feel this negatively affected the book. I'm thinking the author was really working to set up the entire series starting here. I look forward to what will happen next!
Notebook Mysteries: Changes and Challenges is the third book in this series. I do recommend reading the first two books in this series before delving into this book. Parts of the story pick up from book 2 continuing Emma's story. I always enjoy a book set in the 19th century and this did not disappoint. The setting is in Chicago and we are reminded of how fast the world was changing but also how slow it was to travel or for some news to spread. Emma is feisty and smart as she works her way around a new mystery. She is fun to read about and everything going on around her. I'm glad I stumbled upon this series and look forward to reading more in the future.
Emma and her colleagues are busy once again solving cases. Emma inherits an estate and the wealth that comes with it. She sets up a foundation to help different charities. Someone else wants that money, as well, and it’s up to the gang to find out who. In the meantime, Emma’s friend, Tony, requests her help finding a colleague who has gone missing in Paris, While Emma is in Paris, Jeremy works to stop a killer who has been tracking Emma. If you’ve read the previous books in the series, you won’t be disappointed in this one.
I have followed this series from the start and this is a great continuation of the story. I have loved the originality of the series and this book is no different. You are transported straight back into the characters and their lives. It is so easy to connect with them again as they embark on yet another adventure. The story is fast paced and exciting and has a lot going on. It took no time to fly through it as I was enjoying the story so much. This is a great book and great series and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
