My first book by this author. She has a jerky-jerky writing style that took some getting used to, and the prose was riddled with proofreading errors and awkward phrasing.
I found the story lacking in the kind of gritty realism I prefer in my Westerns.
I quite enjoyed this book. I had a few issues. Overall, I don’t care for her characterization of natives, it’s very old school and slanted but apart from that it’s very good.
Zander Wade was in the war. Now he’s a bounty hunter saving money to purchase a track of land and become a rancher. He comes across a small group of men attacking a young woman he presumes is native as there is another woman lying dead close by who is clearly dead. He shoots the men and rescues the young woman. She can barely speak English. He leaves her behind but she follows after him until he discovers what she is doing. She manages to tell hi her name is Zaima and she wants him to take her with him. He’s astonished to learn she is a white woman and has no recollection of how she came to be where she is. She’s be treated as not much more than a slave for years and does not want to go back and Zane reluctantly agrees she can come with him though he plans to leave her behind as soon as he knows she’ll be safe.
ButTam as he refers to her soon worms her way into his heart. For her part she practically worships the ground he walks on and in her mind he is Black Wolves. Years ago she dreamed of a large black wolf who rescues her and in her mind the wolf becomes the man who has rescued her.
There’s not a lot of action in this book, just two people coming to know each other and slowly becoming the others world. I adored both of them. Though innocent, Tam is such a strong and brave young woman with a most interesting take on the world. And Zane is the strong, silent type of hero we often see in Westerners. He has a lot of respect for Tam and we see him over their journey becoming more infatuated with her and unable to let her go. More and more she is turning his world around.him from dark to light. This was such a good book apart from my issues and a book I can see me reading again and again. This is a great example of why I love Western romances so much.
I love dirty, crazy, sex books, but once in a while something like this comes along. And I end up loving it. Effortless and smooth reading... kept me interested. I love a strong woman, and even more when she loves unconditionally and doesn't care. ME LIKE it, as Tam would say!!
This was a slow burn, western set romance, with a lot of day to day life shown, which are all things I like!
When Taima was a child, natives attacked and killed her family and kidnapped her. She doesn’t remember this, but her life is sad and no one treats her well. “The Wolf” aka Zane rescues her when she’s around 17/18 from an attempted rape in his travels and then she follows him, believing him to be something she saw in her dreams.
What follows is a slowwww burn and them building their life.
Zane was reluctant to help her, but never cruel. Taima had a lot to learn about language, the world, and everything, but she’s so earnest and honest in her emotions that she was very endearing to me.
The only aspect I didn’t like was that Zane, although admitting he finds her pretty and has lust for her, spends at least 75% of the book not loving her and even at the 3/4 mark saying he thought of her as a child. She has adored him the whole time.
I think his thinking should’ve changed way sooner. Without too many spoilers, she leaves for a year or so and comes back more refined and beautiful, and then he changes his tune so fast, I wasn’t totally feeling it. I would’ve liked him to have those feelings before she left so they grew in that time. (I do think he was sort of in denial also, but I wanted it to be less abrupt)
I liked the aspects of them living their life on the ranch they built! And I really rooted for them to be happy together.
So this definitely started off strong for me, didn’t 100% satisfy me by the end, but was still quite enjoyable!

@dciudadjardin1
I didn't mean to read this story. I read the first short video about the page and intended to stop. I didn't stop until the end. I liked all the characters a lot and I really enjoyed following them through all of their adventures and life changes. If you want to read a less than typical historic romance with lots of story to it then this is your book.
When I first saw the cover of this great book on Facebook I knew this would be the first Historical Western that I would have read in a long time. Some covers of books either really attract you to read a certain book or they don’t. This cover of Black Wolf, with that sexy cowboy/gunfighter look caught my attention right away. Not only did this book have a great cover, but this book did not disappoint at all. I started this book right away and I was hooked and there was no stopping until I got to the very delightful ending. I mentioned this book to a friend and she also bought this book and said “I believe I’ve seen that male model on another cover” Isabel Keats is a new author to me but what a beautiful writer she is and such a great story and I don’t believe there was a dull moment in the book. Great characters all around with a very interesting story line that catches your attention and doesn’t let go. Definitely a great 5 star Book.
This was a very sweet love story. A bit of a slow burn with mild spice (open door but not too explicit)
The writing in a few places felt really choppy, but I think this is translated to English, so that could have something to do with it.
Overall, I would read from this author again. I really liked the characters in this book and I loved watching their relationship develop. I especially love that Zane was never cruel to Taima and that he wasn't described as a manwh*re. Taima was a great balance of strong and naïve. There were certain things she was naïve about, but Keats never made her childish because of it.
My first book by Ms Keats and what a superb work this book turned out to be. The love story between the wolf and Tam is truly exceptional. Even though this is fiction,.. I wo Der how much this book could actually be true for those few who survived being captured by a. Indians tribe
Published in 2023 by Ms. Keats and translated by Ian Davis, this is one of the best historical fiction western romances I've read in a long time. (And that's taking into consideration the many, many times the translator used the word "interlocutor".) If a reader has enjoyed Ellen O'Connell's work, then it's possible they will also like this story.
The book begins in 1865 after the war has ended. Zane Wade, the MMC is a former Union soldier who finished his service early enough for him to become a bounty hunter. His earnings in said occupation will help him to fulfill his personal goal of wanting to buy land in the west. There is a property available that his brother-in-law has informed him about and that's where he's traveling to when he encounters Taima, the MFC.
Two ruthless men are attempting to rape Taima when Zane happens upon the skirmish. One man is preparing himself to take Taima while the other is telling him to "hurry up" because his turn will be next. Another body is laying a little distance away. (Identified and explained later by the author.) Taima is kicking, scratching, and screaming with all her might. Zane rescues her by killing both men in self defense because they draw on him first. Zane tells Taima she can go back to her tribe now and he prepares to leave. Later, he can't help but notice that she's following him because he can smell her. (One of the women from the Nei Me village taught Taima to cover herself in swamp mud so she would resemble the other tanned natives. This same Nei Me woman (Meda) also confirms to Taima that her dreams of the "black wolf" saving her will come to fruition.) Zane Wade dresses in all black clothes, so Taima calls him "Wolf". She believes he is her savior.
Zane of course wants nothing to do with her. He gives her a bar of soap and tells her the only way she can travel with him is if she washes herself clean. So you can imagine the surprise Zane exhibits when he discovers she is a white young girl with blondish hair. As they travel together, he becomes more impressed with her due to her abilities to snare, trap, fish, and cook their meals. She's also a quick learner and very smart about plants and herbs. Taima also saves his life once before they reach Zane's sister and brother-in-law's farm.
Throughout most of the book, Taima's English is very broken. She knows some words, but doesn't speak English fluently. I have to give the author credit for showing Taima's English learning process in moderation. When she becomes impatient, excited, or angry, Taima doesn't use the proper tenses of verbs. Zane is constantly correcting her speech which provides much humor during the story. It's important to note that while Zane admires Taima's work ethic and ingenuity, he has no desire for a romantic relationship. Especially after he learns of her innocence.
The author does a wonderful job throughout the book explaining how Taima originally becomes part of the Nei Me tribe, how she handles working with Zane and her emerging feelings for him. The developments that occur between Zane, Taima, and other supporting characters, and how they resolve problems and difficulties that occur over time and with characters who are the cause of said problems and difficulties are well explained by the author and closure is adequately provided. Of the supporting characters, my favorites were O'Hara and Violet. They were good people who only wanted the best for Taima.
It's a good book and one that readers who enjoy historical western fiction will hopefully like. I highly recommend it.
Ever since reading 'Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold' by Ellen O'Connell, I've been in a very western romance mood. Haven't been able to find too many that are that good, but that hasn't stopped me from looking. This one was actually a very pleasant surprise.
This was originally penned in Spanish by Isabel Keats and then translated into English by Ian Davis. I didn't realize this when I initially started reading it, but once I did, I was even that much more impressed with the story, since it could have potentially lost some of its original eloquence through translation, yet I still found it to be beautiful.
This is the story of a former Union soldier, Zane, turned bounty hunter who now has a dream of starting a ranch. He comes upon a woman struggling with two nasty, rough necks who are attempting to sexually assault her. One Native American woman already lays dead on the bank of the river, a previous victim of the two men attacking the woman now. Zane rescues the woman who sees him as the "black wolf" that has always visited her in her dreams. He sees her as a young, filthy, innocent girl in need of help. And this is the story of how they become so much more to each other.
Tam had been taken as a small child during an "indian" massacre. She has endured a lot of pain and abuse for the last 14-16 years of her life with the tribe that took her and barely remembers English. This presents enough of an obstacle, but Zane worries that them traveling together (him an unmarried man and her a single young woman) will also be a potential problem so he cuts her hair (it was terribly matted anyway) and has her dress in boy's clothes so people think she is a young boy. This also allows them to live together without causing too many eyebrows to raise. Eventually, though, her true gender was found out and the townspeople insisted they marry or Zane would not be able to buy supplies from the only store available to him for his ranch. They marry, but do not consummate the marriage....this is where the story really starts, not to mention there's a whole slew of supporting cast members that you meet in between and after all this happening. It's just really lovely story that I thoroughly enjoyed. It does require some grace because of the translation. There are MANY instances where it should be "his" mother or "his" sister and it consistently always uses "her" mother or "her" sister, but you get the gist of what's being said and it's worth looking over.
If there was one thing I could change about this, it would be that more time was spent developing their relationship after she returns from visiting her grandfather. The dynamic between the two of them changed too quickly for my liking, but I still did enjoy the story overall.
I would recommend this story to anyone that loves a good western romance or any reader that appreciates love persevering through adversity.
