The series definitely lost it's charm, it was almost annoying having to read it. I had loved Mads pretty much since the beginning except at the end where she just blew. *blows raspberries* The male lead, whatshisname, was to quote Mads Schoolmarmish and incredibly BORING! Cardboard has more personality .
Just the same, it's Helen Harper, I know she'll bounce back in her next books.
I finished the series for the sake of completeness, the third book lost its charm for me, too many new elements were introduced without explanation or leading anywhere. The ending seemed lacklustre, and Mordana was still a pain, no real life character acts like this, almost unhinged all the time. Morgan had been relegated to typical UF LI, with no opinions or thoughts of his own and rubus had turned into a caricature of an evil villain
“I couldn’t see the expression on Morgan’s face but I was certain he was chuckling. With such a hearty, clever wit as mine, it was nigh on impossible to keep a straight face.”
All right, I struggled through the first two but fell victim to my curiosity and had to read the third to find out how it all ends. Pretty simple, do the faeries get back to Mag Mell or not? I feel like a masochist for even trying to get through this one...I just have no real interest left. Starting with Madrona having amnesia was pretty clever, I really liked the reveals in book 2 about exactly what happened (despite Madrona still not knowing), but there's nothing left for me to care about in Book 3. Madrona and Morgan have a really, really boring relationship and Morgan, whom I mentioned had potential as an interesting character in Box of Frogs, really turned into some Generic Stock Character in Book 2 and continues it here. I mean, I've read my fair share of eyeroll inducing YA, so you'd think my tolerance is pretty high at this point, but unlike those, I don't even dislike him. I just don't care at all.
Madrona somehow is even more over the top egotistical here and every other bit seemed to be added fluff about how she thinks of herself as so awesome, sexy, smart, whatever. I *think* this was originally intended to be kind of her cute quirk/charm, but I never liked it much in the other books and she's just downright insufferable here. I guess it's just not my type of humor.
I skimmed through a few paragraphs here and there of Book 1, skimmed through some pages of Book 2, and skimmed through at least a good third of the book here. Maybe it would have been better if I'd just given up and not tried to read this at all, so I'm not even going to rate it as I think it would be a bit unfair to do so. All kudos to the author for writing what she wants, but her writing is definitely not for me. Lately, I've been reading quite a few books where I wonder why on earth I'm reading them. I was trying to figure out what makes other people like these new ebook-0nly publications of very specific types of books (like the so-called "reverse harem" books) so much. But at the end of the day, I'm way too busy to be spending ANY amount of time reading stuff that isn't that great, so I think it's about time to really stop.
So glad this series is over with! I read and loved several other of Helen Harper's series but this one was horrible. If I hadn't gotten them for free and if there were more then 3 books in the series I would have given up after book 1. I know new series can be difficult to start sometimes for authors so I decided to give the second book a try after not really getting into the first book. It didn't get better just worse but with only 1 book left in the series I decided to finish it. In both the 2nd and last books the author messes up both really important final battle scenes by having characters either ask for something they were already holding or trying to pass it off when they already did. I don't understand how this was missed in not 1 but 2 books! There were repetitive conversations, the characters were either incredibly stupid or annoying or both! It's hard to like a book when you extremely dislike the main character(s). There's a spin off series and thankfully the main characters won't be in them so I'll give the first book a try but if it is anything like these I'll just stop at book one instead of putting myself through another annoying series.
This was a great end to this trilogy and still absolutely hilarious!
Madrona still needs to save the world from being destroyed by a magical sphere and only a dragon can help. Shame the only dragon Madrona, Morgan and the rest of their group know about is dead, so the hunt is on for a new one, but they are incredibly rare! Rubus still won't give up on getting the sphere back so all the fae can return to their home of Mag Mell, but doing so may just cause the end of the world. Manchester is already suffering from magic use as it is and time is running out!
This book was fast paced and full of laughs and action and a touch of romance too. I just loved Madrona and her spunky attitude! Her and Morgan really do fit well together. There were a few surprising twists and turns especially from Julie, but panic does make people do the unexpected!
Would love to catch up with Madrona again in the future to see if she ever did regain her memories and how she dealt with that, as not having them has certainly changed her as a person. She understands that her past life was not the best and she was not the nicest of people, but she has tried to make amends and tried to changed her future actions taking into consideration others' feelings this time, which maybe she wouldn't have done before. Maybe she doesn't want those negative memories back, but would she also miss out on some of the good memories too?
Thank you to Helen for sending me an ARC copy of this book to enjoy!
This is the final book in the series, and Mad is ready to finally take out Rubus. However, that proves to be a more challenging ordeal than anyone originally thought. When they add in some werewolves to help, and the vampires things start to look better, but due to the increase of magic their world is being destroyed and strange things are happening. Mad must find a way to help fix it before it is too late.
This was a great ending to this series, and I loved the heroine! She was funny, brave, and full of life. I also loved her and the hero together as well, and I really enjoyed the plot line of the store. It had a few twists and turns, and it was really very interesting. I thought the overall book was very good, and I was sad to see this one end. I look forward to more from Helen Harper though, especially if there will be a spin off series.
So after reading City of magic I already knew the gist of what happens but it was interesting to see what happened on the other side. Maddy still has no memory and believes she’s a murderer, however that doesn’t stop her being over the top more so than the first two books.
The awkward spying and relationship drama is done leaving Maddy to be who she wants and adding a good dose of humour to the story, along with the start of Charley’s story and some new characters. Nicely wrapped up and maybe some foreshadowing. I hope so. This one was my favourite out of the three books.
This was my first Helen Harper read and really loved it. I'm now an HH fan. Full of laughs, dry wit, underlying sexy tension, what more could you ask for?
Not a single goddamn part of this book made any sense or was well done. This is the second series I've read by the author where the quality of the books was greatly reduced with each book, and this series did not start out as well as Slouch Witch did. Not sure if I'll be reading any more.
4.5 Stars! The third and final book in Helen Harper’s humorous, action-packed Fractured Faery series, the fate of the sphere is up in the air.
Summary: Madrona “Maddy” Madhatter still can’t remember a thing about her past life or actions. She does know that she’s a key player, and probably the most important link, in stopping the apocalypse. So, she may be a former drug dealer and bloodthirsty murderess, too. Nobody’s perfect and the world needs a heroine. Rubus is intent on getting ahold of the dragon’s sphere, and going to any lengths to achieve his goal. But he isn’t the only threat to the wellbeing of the world. Dangerously unpredictable magical surges are rolling through Manchester, causing untold damage and strange events to occur. Could Maddy herself have had something to do with the oddities? Maddy must pull together every scrap of hope she possesses in order to overcome the mountain of obstacles in her path. With her sexy love bunny, her friends, a dragon, and host of werewolves at her side, Maddy’s sure they’ll come out on top. Even if they must battle swarms of locusts and fiery rain to do it.
************************* Since book two in the series ended with a bang, literally, I was anxious to see how Maddy’s impulsive actions turned out. Maddy is hilarious and amazing. From the first page, she often had me laughing until crying. She’s smart, quick-thinking, fearless, and soft-hearted (even though she’d deny that with her dying breath). I loved her ability to bring lightness and humor to darker moments, and I thought her enormous ego was a stitch. Even when she wasn’t completely sure, her confidence and optimism kept her going. I adored Morgan for her. Morgan was more straightlaced, a rule follower. He was also a natural leader, kind, thoughtful, and strong. I liked that Maddy gave him levity, while he grounded her in some ways, in return. They were perfect for each other and I loved their scenes in the book, as well as the major increase in romance. Overall, I was sad to know this was the final book, since I’ve become so engrossed in this world. The storyline was obviously a continuation of the last two books, but it was anything but predictable. There were some twists and turns that had my mouth falling open, for sure. Supporting cast saw us reuniting with characters we’ve met before, but also introduced us to some new faces, as well. I particularly liked Charley and seriously loved the banter between her and Monroe. There are some heartstopping surprises from characters, too. Specifically, one favorite nearly broke my heart. I was fully enraptured with the story from beginning to end. I was happy to learn some answers on the goings on, in and around Manchester. I still feel like there is so much more to know, though. Especially about the fate of the city after everything that has happened, and the magic behind the borders closing. I’m more than happy to learn that Ms. Harper plans on writing a spin-off series. I didn’t dislike the ending of The Fractured Faery series. It was bittersweet, but perfect for this story arc, but I’m a bit selfish and would have liked a teensy bit more. I can understand why an epilogue may not be appropriate since we might get to catch up to Maddy again in the next series. That said, I would have loved to see The Madhatter with all of her memories. With Maddy’s sass and humor, I’m sure it would have been something to see. Helen Harper has a gift for infusing her stories with humor while still maintaining the gravity of an important situation. She blends fun, action, magic, and romance very well, and I’m looking forward to reading her other series, as well as future endeavors. ♡
I've read two other series by this author and really enjoyed them so I was excited to find this series on Kindle Unlimited and borrowed all three books at once. I read the first book and thought it was pretty good. By the end of the second book, I had developed a serious dislike for the main character. Consequently, this book has sat on my Kindle for well over a year. I thought it was time to either read or delete. I read somewhere that authors who have books on Kindle Unlimited get paid by the number of pages read in each book so I decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately I still don't like the heroine. She's just a special kind of annoying. That said, others might really enjoy the series. I would probably give it three and a half stars if that were an option because there is nothing wrong with the writing. I would be willing to try other series by this author since I have liked two out of three, but I'm happy to have this one finished.
This is a fantastic finale to this series and leads beautifully into a new spin-off series I can't wait for Harper to release! Book 1 was mostly about the mystery of Madrona, book 2 focused on the mystery of the villain and book 3 focuses on the mystery of the magic (and a bump of romance)! I think this one really invests in the dangers and action in the overarching world Harper built for her quirky characters and the fantastical action is epic and exciting. She wraps up many of the loose ends without it seeming too perfect and forced--hence the lead in to what promises to be an interesting new side to this urban fantasy world. I cannot recommend Harper's clean, witty and adventurous writing enough. And with this whole series out in 1 month, you can't even fault her for the well-played cliffhangers.
Skulk of Foxes by Helen Harper a five-star read that you won’t want skulking in the shadows. This is the third and final book in the Fractured Faery series and what an ending to the story. I have loved the series and all the jokes that ran through it, Maddie made me laugh and she made me cry, pink elephants are something that I will always smile upon and think of her. This series is filled with characters that will have you second guessing everyone, the good guys aren’t always good, and the bad guys are usually bad mind. But everyone has a story that will tell you a tale. The one character in this whole series that will blow you away most is the character of Manchester the city itself, just like the real city its strong enough to endure what ever can be thrown at it at let’s face it a blue sky in Manchester would make many a day. Thank you Helen Harper for being an amazing writer.
This was probably the most enjoyable in the trilogy for me. We have more or less found out who Madrona is, what her past is like and which side she is really on and what she was up to. She meets a whole bevy of interesting new characters and as I see that they are going to feature in a new story I am looking forward to this. There is a certain betrayal that felt very sad to me and despite this being a fairly lighthearted and fun series, there was still some darker themes and death, which kept me the reader on the edge if my seat, as it felt as if no-one was safe. Ultimately the end was not all neat and tidy, albeit a resolution of sorts and for once I was actually happy with this. Partly because we get more of the world and partly because, well life is messy. Fun, sassy and an all round good read.
What an amazing wrap to another wonderful series by Helen Harper. I love the characters in this series, and in this book, we get to meet a few new ones as well as revisiting old ones. I will add that I love the banter that happens between Charley and Monroe. Now, I won’t tell you who those two are, but keep your eye out for them because when they are together it’s a barrel of laughs. Also, I love the fact that we finally get answers to what really started this circus off in the first place.
On another a side note, the only thing I wish we would have gotten was to see what would have come when The Madhatter got her memories back. The ending was good, sad, but still good. Other than that this was another amazing story. Well done to the author.
I really wanted to love this book i just didnt. It was annoying to be frank. The main character really annoyed me, Rubus annoyed me, the amnesia thing was overdone the list goes on. There were some parts i enjoyed, the ending mostly, I just wanted more from this book. I wanted to know more about Madronas life and her past and I wanted her to be more powerful. This is the first review I have left after reading many, many books but I couldn't help but comment, it was like it could of been a 5 part series instead it was all crammed in to 3 and rushed. I was terribly disappointed which is a shame as I think it had potential.
Audiobook (the narrator for this series was really good btw)
Pros: Madrona was slightly (very slightly) less annoying in this one The plot was good... lots of twists and turns and roadblocks, creative uses of known magical creatures It wrapped up! No cliffhanger!
Cons: Ugh, I just can't stand the 'I'm so awesome' attitude and of course she gets told to shut up all the time which I just absolutely would crumble hearing so it's hard for me to read that
Overall, story was good, and the characters were pretty well-fleshed-out too (I disliked her, but she was a fully-formed character, which I can appreciate). Forgot to say also that I learned some new swear words, so that's fun. ;)
So..... here I am at the end of the trilogy. I always enjoy Helen Harper's books, but is this worth 3 Audible credits? Nah, I don't think so. It's definitely worth a credit or maybe two. I guess that means I wish it were 1 or possibly 2 volumes.
4 stars for the story, 2 stars for stretching it into 3 books. So that equals 3 stars.
I really liked what Harper did with her heroine, Madrona. She shouldn't be likable, but even though she's a self-confessed bitch we know that deep down she's quite amazing.
And I think this is a Slytherin (Madrona)/Hufflepuff (Morgan) couple.
Noooo, it's over! I loved Madronna so hard. Even amnesia riddled (or maybe especially amnesia ridden), she was strongly self assured and cracked me up every other page. I could have read ten more books about her. Spoiler free version, we find out more about the paranormal world, and *almost* everything is resolved, no capes required. This was my second Helen Harper series, (I started on A Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic) and I'm now strongly convinced I need to read everything she's ever written.
I thoroughly enjoyable series. I laughed and cried. I can't wait to see what happens to Manchester in the aftermath.
Helen knows how to write a funny yet at times serious book that had me laughing and crying. A couple of minor slips that should have been caught in the editing stage, but not enough to put me off reading at all. I love that Helen keeps her characters realistic, and with flaws, as we all have. Finally I wish Madrona and Morganus lots of luck now they're home and Maddy should be getting her memory back. 😀
I waited until I finished the series before reviewing. The storyline was interesting enough for me to read all three books in the series. However, the main characters was not very likeable. She was self a entered and tossed insults at everyone she met. I think this is what was supposed to be funny. I didn't like it. She was supposed to be kind and caring underneath but I didn't see that. I only re commend this series if you don't mind a main character with few likeable qualities.
The last book of this series was such a disappointment. Not only did it have a completely lack luster ending, it had pages and pages of fluff that I had to skim over. It seemed like the author was trying to make a book out of just a few chapters of storyline, which was beyond frustrating when the ending needed so much more work. The thought of continuing with this world in City of Magic is depressing and I doubt I will. I’m saddened to leave this review as the first book in this series was absolutely amazing and the author is an incredibly talented writer.
