Steve woke up not seeing clearly and not knowing where he was. Memories started coming back where he went to see his brother Sam at the hospital, then left and a woman who looked like a bird with claws and beak stuck him with a needle. The tray on the gurney near him now had lots of bloody needles on it… his blood? He tried to sit up but something had his hands. And his hands looked like paws with black and gray hair on it. He kept willing it to go back to his hand, and finally the paw changed back to what it should be. When he finally got a hand loose, he unbuckled the straps and exited into a hallway. He had to get out. Then the bird woman screeched and came after him. Just as he was opening a door, she grabbed his ankle with her talons. He kicked her in the face as she clung to him and she fell down the long ladder steps. And now she threatened to kill him. He burst out of the door and ran as she was close behind him. A hazy feeling preceded his hands changing again and he felt like he was shrinking. And he ran on four legs faster than he had ever run before!
He was so hungry and, when his stomach growled, he growled back! A pheasant landed and before it knew he was there, he had captured it. He ate the entire bird, purring the whole time. And while he ate, Albert Huntly from FUCN’A (“Furry United Coalition Newbie Academy”) watched him to see if he was a shifter. But he stayed a cat and now slept. He was evidently not the human “Mother” had kidnapped to experiment on. Sam, a black cat shifter still healing from John’s cobra bite, was a FUC agent and would be upset his brother was still missing, knowing what might have happened to him.
Steve went to a lake and got a drink after unsuccessfully trying to catch a fish. Then something, someone, leaped from the water. A graceful woman with scales dove back in. When she saw him, she asked if he needed help. And he knew she was like him; someone had changed her too. Cindy has also been stuck as a rescued resident at FUCN’A. She was saved from the lab, but they can’t reverse the experiment that gave her permanent gills, rainbow scales, and webbed fingers. Then she meets Steve who is in awe thinking she is a lovely mermaid. Could he be interested in her? Could they have a future together? Or would that horrible bird woman come to get her?
BITS AND BOBS is the twenty-fourth book in the multi-author FUC Academy series. Each is a stand-alone, paranormal, romantic suspense story set in the FUC world created by Eve Langlais. You do not need to have read any of those books to start this series – I haven’t, though I wish now that I had.
This story was very well written with great descriptions that made me feel like I was living the events.
There is a lot of suspense and emotion. For Steve, it all started with visiting his brother, Sam, in the hospital after Sam was bitten by a snake. Steve doesn’t know about FUC, shifters, or that his world is about to change.
I loved that Steve thought that Cindy was a mermaid. What she saw as disfiguring and ugly, he saw as beautiful and unique. That is the beginning of true love. Years ago, I saw a movie called “The Enchanted Cottage.” In it a disfigured war veteran and a plain-Jane maid don’t see each other as they are. Instead, each is the most beautiful person to the other… as long as they are in the cottage. I was reminded of that movie when I read this book. Steve truly believed that Cindy was his beautiful mermaid. Absolutely heart-warming.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Bits and Bobs by Mandy Rosko. This story is part of the FUC Academy world. This story reads well as stand alone, but is much better enjoyed if you read the books in series order. Steve is kidnapped and becomes another Mother victim. I enjoyed the interaction between Cindy and Steve. They both had their issues to get through and somehow found strength in each other. A sweet and sexy read that has some resolution, another storyline thread is opened and there is a setup for the next book. Mature Readers Suggested.

When she finds Steve, who had just escaped the lab where "Mother" did her experiments, they form a bond and friendship that could possibly lead to more. But in the meantime they are both at FUC Academy to help them with their transition from human to shifter. Mother on the other hand is still looking for them and her pet snake shifter John is still being held in a cell. Loved it.
