I had come across this series sometime over a year ago, when I was browsing harem novels and the like. I passed it over at that time, because the premise did not sound interesting to me. Recently, though, I came across a discussion about harem novels to check out, and this series received rather glowing praise from more than one person. Against my previous judgment, I decided to check it out. Turns out, my initial reaction was indeed correct: this was boring and uninteresting.
The protagonist, Jak, washes up on a strange and unfamiliar shore, with very convenient amnesia. Despite this, he is skilled in everything he sets out to do, and is infallible. He almost immediately crosses paths with a beautiful woman, whom he saves, and they basically instantly fall in love.
That's all this story is. Jak is perfect, he achieves everything he sets out to accomplish with little difficulty, and he gets to have a loving relationship with two women that love him unconditionally and everything is perfect. I was hoping that something would develop, because primitive caveman survival is not interesting enough on its own to carry a story. There's some mysterious hints at more going on, with magic and some kind of dark corruption, but that doesn't get expanded upon in the course of this particular entry. It's just bog standard caveman living all the way down.
One ridiculous thing about this is how they are primitive humans, who are so unadvanced, they're not even capable of metalworking. Yet, despite that, they are very articulate in their speaking. At one point, Jak even talks about concepts such as activating and turning off some sort of innate magical ability he has (those words are used almost verbatim). It's ridiculous. They are cavemen, but they talk and act like modern humans.
Even the sex scenes were boring, which is a cardinal sin for a harem novel. They constantly refer to it as "sharing intimacy," and it's all written in a stiff and passionless way. I don't really know how to explain it other than that. It manages to make sex boring, which is rather funny, I guess.
Anyways, it was boring. I don't plan to ever continue this series, unless I exhaust everything else first and have no other choice. Or some other reason compels me.
