What would BDSM be without submission? You don't have to find out with this Toy Box, which explores the concept through three different couples from Sean Michael's Hammer series. Tanny's having a bad day but Billy knows just what Montana needs and he gives it to his lover in Better Than Running. Meanwhile, Jeremy's day hasn't been bad, just long and full. Working at the forge on his prosthetics leaves him exhausted. Good thing Simon doesn't mind giving a little TLC. Better Than Peanut Butter finds food taking a back seat to love. Finally, in Better Than Coffee, Jim and Marcus explore the heat that always rises so quickly between them. It's espresso day for Jim, but can Marcus offer him something even better than Jim's favorite shot of coffee?
Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."
A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.
Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
A collection of threes short stories featuring a sub and his dom. They are all established couples and easy reads. My one complaint is that they all sound similar. Going to try the next toy box now.
Short but sweet episodes that might not make much sense if read in isolation
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 9/10
PROS: - The characters in each of these stories are consistent from one story/novel to the next within the series. These stories could very easily just be chapters from the novels (Marcus and Jim in Bent, Simon and Jeremy in Forged, and Billy and Tanny in Found). - Michael does a good job of depicting characters’ desires succinctly. When, for example, Jim does something that he thinks Marcus won’t like, his devastation at the possibility of disappointing his Dom comes across in just a couple of sentences. - I adore several of these characters. Tanny is one of my all-time favorite subs because he’s so endearingly confused and helpless at times. In this story, he’s having a clumsy day at one point and says glumly to Billy, “I’m just not fitting into the world today.” He makes me think of what Eeyore would be like as a sexual submissive. - I like Simon and Jeremy more with each story I read about them. Michael doesn’t avoid showing unpleasantness with these two, and the difficult moments show how strong their bond really is, and how hard they have to fight together against external circumstances. I particularly love how Simon handles Jeremy when he’s angry or frustrated or grumpy: a single caress or look can take Jeremy’s mind off of his bad mood and start to relax him.
CONS: - There are quite a few typos that are very obvious and that could have been fixed if someone had read through the stories carefully just one time. Example: “The deadline had him in immediate and completely frozen.”
Overall comments: These stories are short little episodes in the characters’ lives--nothing earth-shattering or life-changing. I’m not sure that it’s strictly necessary to read the novels first in order to enjoy the stories in this volume; that said, I would still recommend reading the novels first, because if you don’t, these stories will give away some rather large developments from earlier in the series.
Three quick, sexy and entertaining stories featuring couples from the Hammer world. Although all three of the stories feature established couples it's not necessary to have read the other books in the Hammer series to enjoy this collection.
I would have given it more stars, if it wasn't for submissives talking like fouryearolds and doms like Barney. Sorry, I just can't seem to get into the scene with continues stuttering and "love-love-love"
