Suicide

Rate this book

Having been a Mark Safranko junkie for more than a decade, I had guiltily let this title idle on my 'To Read' shelf for way too long. I have adored and devoured Mark's previous works including the Zajack novels (HATING OLIVIA, LOUNGE LIZARD etc) which for me are some of the funniest, most addictive and heartbreakingly honest books I have ever read. Knowing that THE SUICIDE would be a very different book to the Max Zajack confessionals I had on some subconscious level put off reading this in the fear that it might not live up to what had come before. I couldn't have been more wrong!

This book is so much more than just another crime novel. It is dark, gritty, original and features the first trans gender ex-detective character that I've come across in a work of fiction. But it is the many human stories running like rivers through out the main plot that will both surprise you and keep you hooked. Although Safranko's style is often compared to other writers like Bukowski, Dan Fante or Henry Miller it seems to me that doing this doesn't give Mark his full dues. Mark Safranko really is his own beast. If your late to the party and enjoy your prose raw with no frills, you really should check Mark's back catalogue out. It's been said before, but Mark Safranko is one of the best writers writing today. Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure I read this in 2017 and just finished it again this morning. I can see why some consider The Suicide to be SaFranko's best published novel, although I might go with Hating Olivia or Nowhere Near Hollywood.
