Shapeshifters. Who doesn't love 'em, whether it's wolves, wild dogs, or spirit guides? The K9 Taste Test has three great tales about the animal within.
In Misa Izanaki's Running Wild, Fen is worried that he's lost Loki forever when he finally finds his lover at the pound. Loki needs more than the city life that Fen is so accustomed to, and Fen needs to find a way to give it to him before it's too late.
In Heightened Senses, by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox, Jasper is sure that he shouldn’t feel the way he does about Sampson, his guide and protector. He finds his shapeshifting friend fascinating, and dreams of a deeper relationship, but will he be able to break the rules?
Finally, in BA Tortuga's Yard Dog, Alex knows he's in trouble when Brandon gets home from his overnight stint in doggie jail. Can he get what he needs, and let Brandon have a little revenge?
"Running Wild" by Misa Izanaki [3 stars:]: Like most of Misa Izanaki's work, this short story is interesting enough to whet the appetite but not quite enough to give a full taste of the story itself, or the characters. I knew that they were shifters who still have their animal ears and tails only because I've read a few of Misa's previous works, but the fact that Fen was a wolf as well kind of threw me off; the descriptions given of Loki made it sound as if they were of two completely different natures. I never could quite get a hold of what was going on and why, before it ended.
"Heightened Senses" by Anah Crow & Dianne Fox [4 stars:]: Wonderful concept, and really my only complaint is that it was WAY too short. After a few pages I narrowly understood what was going on, and in a few more I was enraptured by the characters and wanting more. The whole world built, the rarest glimpse we're given into the dependence of pet and gifted is unique to the point of just leaving me in awe. I'll DEFINITELY be searching for more fics in this setting by Crow and Fox in the future.
"Yard Dog" by BA Toruga [5 stars:]: o.m.g ... HOT. That's all I can say for Alex and Brandon. There's just something about aggressive wolf-men that bite and snarl and love all at once. That don't treat the other as if they're easily broken or emotionally hurt by actions or words. Alex has done wrong - he KNOWS he's fucked up - and damn if he isn't just as turned on by the coming punishment as he is wary of it. And Brandon's revenge ... YUM.
