C’est toujours frustrant de lire un roman inachevé... quelle perte pour la littérature russe que Lermontov fut tant persécuté et mourut si jeune.
Lire ce morceau n’a pas grand intérêt, si vous voulez vous essayer à la littérature russe, lisez donc son chef-d’œuvre « un héros de notre temps».

It’s sad to say that this book had not been finished by the author. The plot is marvellous and the atmosphere of the Tsar Russia is always on point!
The book describes the life of Pechorin before “the hero of our time”. An unfinished prequel would have been a great success!

A shame he didn't finish this one. I wanted to give a lower rating out of vengeance. But then again since Lermontov can't see it anyways, he gets his well deserved 3.9 stars for getting me so invested in Pechorin's and Vera's story.

given that it’s unfinished, i can’t say i enjoyed this so much. was kind of forgettable, really...though Lermontov’s writing style is ethereal so that’s three stars for ya.
