An excellent resource on the history and evolution of gladiators. Detailed, easy to read, with lots of supporting colour photos, there is even a reference guide at the back summarizing the gladiator types, their equipment, and their most common opponents which really is really an excellent resource. It is, and will continue to be, a staple resource on my bookshelf.

Uno de los pocos libros que sintetiza la información con ejemplos visuales sobre lo que conocemos (o creemos conocer) sobre los famosos gladiadores.

Como texto es bastante ameno y explicativo, un ensayo narrativo que permite su lectura fluida y que cualquier lector de historia (novato o profesional) puede disfrutar.

Como presentación es bastante agradable encontrar una edición de pasta dura con doble forro. Una portada bastante acertada aunque como diseñador creo que se podría mejorar, talves el color rojo no es la acertada.

El por que de las 4(8/10 pts) estrellas es que definitivamente sería mejor agregar mapas y mucho más imágenes para esclarecer más lo explicativo, también el diccionario pequeño de latín al final es una buen agregado peor aún así faltaron extender más las definiciones.

Very detailed. My only critique is that it was occasionally unexciting to read at times. So detailed, so well researched with sources everywhere. This is definitely a history book. But it was very good. I feel like it filled in all the cracks I had about gladiators- the different kinds, their equipment and likely fighting style, the gladiator schools, and life expectancy of gladiators.

«Гладиаторы» Носова – одна из немногих российских исторических книг, которая переведена на английский язык (и при этом получила достаточно хорошие отзывы). При этом наши историки эту работу оценивают противоречиво. И вот почему: научно-популярная книга Носова фактически опирается только на работы немца Маркуса Юнкельмана.

Последний на сегодня является главным авторитетом по истории гладиатуры, а его классификация типов гладиаторов и вовсе признана стандартной. Проблема же книги Носова в том, что он постоянно обращается как раз к Юнкельману и совсем мало использует другие источники.

Получается некоторое переписывание одной работы + упрощение (все же научно-популярная книга).
У такого подхода есть плюс. Все же качество контента на уровне. Ну а минус в том, что многие полагают, что не совсем красиво так писать исторические работы. Впрочем, Юнкельман пока так и не появился на английском и русском, поэтому книга Носова и нашла свое место под солнцем (и является, на мой взгляд, полезной).

Отдельно хочется отметить обилие изображений, доспехов, реквизиты и авторскую реконструкцию основных типов Гладиаторов (по Юнкельману). Все сделано не просто качественно, а заметно лучше подавляющего большинства работ (лучше только у самого Юнкельмана, где идет уже реконструкция с фотографиями). И эти материалы просто необходимы для книг по данной тематике.

К минусам книги можно отнести формат. Всего 200 страниц с обилием иллюстраций. Получается достаточно краткая история. К тому же гладиаторы рассмотрены только на западе империи (на востоке ситуация сильно отличалась) и с явным уклоном в Италию.

В итоге неплохая научно-популярная компиляция, которая охватывает последние исследования по теме. Пусть и в очень краткой форме. Но для начала вполне подойдет. А в России книга является единственной достойной на данную тематику.

While much of the surface information in this book can be found from other sources that are better written from an entertaining standpoint, there are some real gems here, certainly enough to validate the price.
