Rate this book
Once it was the ultimate mystery. Now the evidence points to the birth of our Universe in circumstances of unimaginable power and fury. We call it the Big Bang: an event that not only created our Universe, but the very fabric of space and time.

In this book, best-selling writers take you on a vivid journey of discovery through the mystery of the creation on the Universe. They follow the Universe from its infancy and turbulent youth to the present---and on into its old age, trillions and trillions of years in the future. Along the way, they investigate the weird particles that populated the early Universe, how the Universe managed to avoid self-destruction, the echoes of the Big Bang, and how we know there was a Big Bang, The result is an authoritative, fascinating, and stunningly clear view of how the universe began.

A complete and coherent explanation of the Big Bang, where time and space began

Given that it is a coherent explanation of how the universe came into existence and how it evolved very rapidly at first and then settled into a slow and steady progression, the Big Bang theory is complicated. It also is a bit disturbing in the sense that it contains within it a principle unusual for science. The theory can be used to explain what happened back to the instant of the event but not for even a few seconds before that. It is rare that there is simply no evidence for what existed before, any question about what came before can only be answered with a scientific shrug of the shoulders.
Couper and Henbest are extremely talented science writers and they demonstrate their skills in this book. Much of the current thought and the consistent evidence for the Big Bang is presented in a coherent and understandable manner. Using a combination of text and images, the reader is taken back in time to literally the beginning of time and space.
Ideas about the creation of the universe have been the subject of various myths down through time. This book presents the coherent and consistent evidence for how the universe arose and evolved, right back to the point where only myth can continue the story.
