Well. This book is not what I expected at all.
From reading the available blurbs and back cover information on this book, I was anticipating a self-help sort of work which gives you more or less specific things to do or think about that would change you for the better, maybe a few quizzes to see where you stand and what you can work on.
You know, concrete and specific things to do for self-betterment.
Instead, what I encountered was a very thin book full of vague and general Yoda/Zen/fortune cookie sort of wisdom. It's like a how-to book with all the 'how' taken out of it.
It's not that this is badly written or anything. In fact, the book is littered with sentences and paragraphs that you could highlight as inspirational quotes! It's just that I, personally, would need more from such a book than solely inspiration.
As a stand-alone work, I wouldn't recommend it at all. However, if you happen to know that you like the Yoda/Zen/fortune cookie approach, or you're looking for a tiny source of inspirational quotes for a variety of occasions, or simply an inspirational supplement to go alongside other self-help books, by all means check this one out!
I must admit this isn't usually a book I would pick up or choose to read. I've never read any type of self-help book before but figured I've been avoiding something that I do not know if I like or not. Thus, I entered to win a copy and if I won I would turn around and read it.. and that's exactly what happened. (I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads!)
Overall, I felt it was easy to read but as another review has pointed out it doesn't really suggest things to do to find yourself. Rather it sets up the state of mind or plants the thoughts about it in the form of inspiring quotes and passages.
I'm not sure that much has changed in terms of the way I think about topics such as death, focus on negative thoughts, or being happy within. Currently, I cannot see a change but it is possible that I might discover later on that this book has changed my approach or thoughts on the topics within it. Perhaps I just need to think more about the topics but only time will tell.
Since I've never read any other kind of self-help book I don't really feel I can recommend or not recommend it to those that do. I can only suggest reading the other reviews in conjunction with my own and determine from there whether its the right fit for you.
I really liked some of the ideas presented in this book. Especially those chapters on fear and death. However, for me personally, the book was too general. There were a lot of different topics and since it's rather short all are presented in some kind of overview. This might be a good start to think about our daily life but a focus on certain key topics would have provided more insight for me.
I did receive a free copy from the book from the author.
I thought the book was okay. I enjoyed some of the inspirational messages and quotes in the book. But over all not real sure yet how memorable it is for me to make a difference in my life.
