Granted, this is for a specialized audience - professional and serious amateur photographers - but it is destined to become a classic. Posing is often a difficult task, particularly under stressful circumstances like weddings but Valenzuela delivers a framework within which to operate, which, while not exactly intuitive, is extremely effective. Issues like proper treatment of the eyes, necessary "gaps" between arms and body to render a more flattering image, aspects of "walking" poses and developing expressions are all examined and explained. Not something to be absorbed in a single reading, but a book to return to time and again. Interesting to examine his shots from a decade ago which he thought were fine at the time in comparison with the shots based on what he learned in the interim. Well done Roberto!
This is a great book for any photographer. It was filled with photographic examples, which made visualizing what to-do and what not to-do so much easier. Sometimes, when taking portraits, you may know that something is not quite right. This book helps identify those not quite right moments and teaches you why it’s not working and how to fix it. I’ll be reading this one again!
I was tempted, at first, to dismiss Roberto Valenzuela, a wedding photographer from Beverly Hills, as a snooty airhead. But the truth is that he has achieved a respectable level of mastery within the art of posing people, and what is more important is that he did a good job of creating a system and theory of how to pose.
An unexpected bonus about reading this book is that it has increased my understanding of body language. (What I have learned is much different than a book written by an ex interrogator/investigator, for example.)
For better or worse, I don't look at posed pictures the same way anymore. Tools are at work, assembling and disassembling every picture.
Roberto, what I would like to say, is "thank you for writing such a wonderful book". I absolutely love this book.
Well written, and well illustrated, Roberto really brings out the art of posing in an extremely systematic manner. What I like, is that he has chosen good and bad examples from his own work, and this is rare in a photographer.
The clear breakdown of the various parts of the body, synthesising everything together, and illustrating dynamics makes the book a joy to read and easy to follow.
Roberto Valenzuela gives some interesting pointers in his journey through posing. I particularly learned a lot from the chapters on hands, eyes, and nose as the x factor. I appreciate that he includes his own work as examples and is not afraid to say "whoops I messed up on that one, but am including it for your learning"
Some of the way he explains the body and poses was a little over my head. However I plan to go back over it and study certain points. Was enjoyable and Roberto did not come across as a know it all and if stated "it's ok if you disagree with me"
A recommended ready if you are a seasoned photographer/model or just starting out
Positive: the book does what the title states - so that's a plus already. Some of the advice is really stuck with you and the patterns are clearly visible whilst going through any photo publication or fashion magazine.
Negative: the author definitely over indulges over his photos, and in a written style that is sometimes awkward to read. One of such examples would be calling one of his own images "iconic." That's just funny.
Another great book by Roberto Valenzuela. Packed full of tips and explanations. Lots of examples of what to do and what not to do. It takes a bit of time to go through this book and it's definitely a must-read for anyone that wants to be serious about taking their photography to the next level. This book and Lindsay Adler's book on Posing are my go-to references.
The way Roberto writes makes it very easy to follow along and practice. You can read straight through or go back and review a chapter on a specific pose. Love having his books as reference materials.
I was told by many that this was the BEST posing book out there and now that I have read it I can't disagree. Even though I have not read many other posing books, this book goes above and beyond. Rather than just showing countless poses, in PPP, Valenzuela goes into WHY a pose is good or bad and basically how to build one from anywhere at any time given any circumstance. He gives you a very structured set of guides to help you understand why certain poses are good or bad. I have been obsessively looking at my own and others photos with his guidelines in mind to help train my brain to spot the pain points that arise every time you are dealing with people who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera (which lets face it, is all the time!)
If Monte Zucker's Portrait Photography Handbook was my dog eared bible for studio portrait photography in my beginning years Roberto's PPP is the New Testament. Roberto has excellent communication skills which made him an outstanding photographer and incredible instructor. Your images will improve once you read and re-read either of these seminal books. The rules of photography can be so easy - the execution - not so much. Roberto's keen understanding of the challenges you encounter in the actual field while practicing/employing your craft help him clarify his approach and principles in a way that can't help but benefit any willing acolyte.
Posing is one of the most challenging disciplines in Portrait Photography and an Art in itself. Picture Perfect Posing is nothing short of a bootcamp for portrait photographers, diving into the details of what makes or breaks a pose. Where many books, simply fly over the subject, this book not only explains why a pose or gesture works, but also illustrates what not to do and gives you a system to remember how to achieve the perfect pose. Very clearly written and beautifully illustrated with useful images, if you’re only going to buy one book on posing, I recommend you buy this one!
Amazing book. Gives a great foundation on how to pose anyone in many situation. Helps build an attention to detail regarding body position. The concepts taught allow you to easily evoke emotion from your clients.
After reading this book, I have developed a more critical eye and confidence in directing subjects for posing. Goes way beyond normal posing books I have read and provides a framework to pose groups and individuals to convey a wide array of emotions. A Classic.
Valenzuela does a good job of breaking down the fundamentals of posing. He doesn't offer a huge variety of poses, but does include important concepts when you do select a certain pose.
Picture Perfect Posing is hands down the best book I've ever read on the subject of posing people. Roberto is not only an exceptional photographer, but he is an outstanding teacher as well. His P3S system is genius.
Easily the most useful photography book I've ever read. Photographing people isn't easy, and posing has been the most difficult aspect for me. Roberto has written a masterfully comprehensive and clear guide to posing. I can't wait to read his other two books!
