I read this book (480 pages) in less then 3 days, it is almost impossible to lay it down and stop reading. The story is about a Dutch merchant marine ship's officer bound to be back home after 6 months of duty on-board a Dutch freighter, when WW-II breaks out. Instead of 6 months it will take him 6 years before he returns to his family. This story tells the true story of many Dutch seaman who had to serve their country in taking part in dangerous convoys, to supply the allies in the war against Germany, and the price they and their families had to pay to regain freedom. The story is breathtaking, sometimes heartbreaking and although a novel the story comes very close to the true history, as I assume that a great part of this story is autobiographic. The dialogues in the story makes that the figures comes to life, almost as if you can watch the story happen as a spectator. I am a former merchant marine ship's officer myself, and it comes to mind that the writer has been very concise in relation to historical facts and figures.
